Owners still need a dog licence where you live ? They were abolished here in 1987. From last year it is compulsory to have a microchip implant, with the owner registered on a national database.

I suppose the authorities decided to start chipping dogs first in anticipation of extending the program to the public, thereby skipping the whole "national ID" fiasco that is so controversial here in the US? I further suppose the implant is painless; after all how many complaints have been heard from the dogs?

Hey Don, a verse from War Pigs by Black Sabbath, just for Whipper.

[QUOTENow in darkness world stops turning,
Ashes where the bodies burning
No more War Pigs have the power,
Hand of God has struck the hour
Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees the war pigs crawling,
Begging mercies for their sins
Satan, laughing, spreads his wings
Oh Lord yeah][/QUOTE]

58°F and rainy this morning, going up to 68° today with potentially severe storms later in the day.

Heard from the auto body shop regarding the boy's wrecked Tiburon. As they got under it to look at straightening the subframe, they discovered a substantial amount of rust, and aren't sure they can pull it straight without the possibility of breaking it. So, Wife talked to the insurance company (she had full coverage on it, but had told the boy it was just liability ;) ), and they agreed to pay the purchase amount. She told him if he can find something at that same price, he can get it. Otherwise, he's walking from now on. This will be his 5th vehicle in two years, and the last one from us, a point we both firmly impressed upon him.

Hog hunt party at Don's place? I've been looking for an excuse to buy a .223 bolt rifle. :D

Poured second cup of coffee. 62° with clear skies this morning. Heading to 88° with sunny skies. Saw parks tractor drive by yesterday. Was thinking I should go to office and if they need another operator. I must need some seat time. Taking wife shopping today.
Lenny, waiting on video.
Don, hope your wife does not get hurt by pig. Carry protection? Maybe Whipper needs to stay closer?
Drew, nice garden.
Irv, hope it dries out before I get home late next month.
Good Morning All.

Good Morning! 50F @ 7:00AM. Some clouds this morning will give way to generally sunny skies for the afternoon. High near 60F. Winds NW at 15 to 25 mph. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph.

Yesterday's front brought only 0.03" of rain in the wee hours this morning, not even enough to wet the concrete on the patio. Big winds today as another Pacific high reestablishes itself bringing back upper 70s for Saturday before another cold front brings in a skiff of rain on Sunday.

That's quite a big bunch of pigs, Don. Ranchers around here hate the things because they can tear up a lot of ground in a hurry. Pig season is year round as a result. You might find the .223 a little light for porkers, PJ. They've got heavy bone and cartilage shields from their shoulder blades covering a large fraction of their vital zone, and a lightweight fast moving bullet might not make it through. Something tough like a 62 grain Nosler Partition might be OK, but you'll need a 1:7 twist to stabilize it. We use deer size calibers out here like 308 Win., 3006, 7mm Rem. Mag. etc. Never had any complaints from the pigs.

Reinstalled the dash on the van yesterday so I could mark where the switch bank will go. I'm a little leery of cutting up the lower part for mounting the switch box, so will practice on the spare dash I have here and take that back for a try out before doing the real thing. The mechanic showed me the muffler clamp he's been using, a plain carbon steel part he wants to do over in stainless. He showed one to me that had only been on a van for six months and it was badly rusted, a result I think of the high temperatures it sees in service. It's not a complicated part, and he's planning to have it made at a local fabricator, but wants my ideas on the design, and perhaps a formal drawing, which I'm happy to provide. Finished the day up by installing the window regulators in the driver and passenger doors, falling short of also installing the scrapers and seals in the window frame because the instructional videos I'd previously loaded on the iPad had disappeard during the last update and the WiFi network at the shop is too slow to stream them. Apple pushed major updates out earlier in the week for all of its devices, so I'll take some time this morning to back everything up before applying them, then moving the videos to the iPad again. Hope they stick this time...

Today the old insturment housing will get a bath, and I'll have a try at cleaning up the faces of the various instruments as well. I was cautioned to only use water and soap to do this, and precious little at that, to avoid smearing the printing. I've ruined one or two before with solvent, so I plan on being extra careful this time around.

Yeah, I've considered that. While I've seen guys drop them with a .22WMR, I never thought that was a good idea. .30-'06 is always a good all-around game cartridge. I've also been lusting after a lever gun in .357mag. Pretty sure a 158gr LSWC out of a 20" bbl will punch through anything a pig can offer. That might be more fun anyway.

What do you think about pig hunting with an AR? My Cajun friends claim that's the way to go.

Ive never shot a pig with anything less than .30-30 or 12 ga with 00 buck or slug, but a friend use to use a .22-250 and never had one run away.

I don't have a problem with it. Again, I suppose it depends on caliber/cartridge. It also depends on the pigs. If you're talking huge animals, .223 may indeed not be enough.

There are a lot of guys in our area who hunt coyote with ARs now. But then, they've probably never been charged by an angry 300 lb one either.

In the Dismal Swamp, most packs had at least one 250-400lb hog, and they all had what we called elephant tusks. More than one hunter has had his deer or rabbit taken away before he could claim it. A lot of those hogs were first or second generation from the farm.

When I was in first grade, one of those big boars made it to the school yard. We all ran into the class rooms and closed the door. The soldiers came and killed the pig.

Later on we found out the trappers who lived near by had trapped it earlier and transported it live to their house. The thing broke the rope and ran away to the school.

are you telling me one of those nasty big old pigs is going to be getting lost South of the Swamp and down my driveway? I have a 5 shot 22LR and a 16 gauge automatic shotgun that, ahem, I've never pulled the trigger on. Was my late wife's. I have birdshot shells for it, that might just really annoy something, like a bear...400 pound hog, about the size of the black bear I hit with my truck.
Hmmm. That's a big pig...perhaps I should up my game a little on the shells...and then have my neighbor show me how to shoot the thing without taking my foot off.

I've seen some of the youtube videos where they hunt pigs in Texas on helicopters with what appears to be fully automatic weapons. I think the farmers and ranchers must
see these pigs as giant rats that need to be exterminated. My understanding is that they can be very destructive. And if a very ticked off alpha boar comes down my lane looking
for trouble, say eating my amaryllis, which for sure would be a terminal offense, perhaps my can of pepper spray or 22 are not the answer. I think a five shell autoloader Browning, so I think I just cock and pull. There is probably a how to video on this, seems to be one on just about everything any more.

66°F and .31 inches rain last 24 hours.
Wife found a patio set at KMart yesterday I get to assemble today.
Still have a couple items to repackage for the freezer.

Be safe
Have a great day

My wife won't let me get a .30-30 for the pigs but I can get a drone to chase them to the neighbors. ;) It would make an awesome video chasing them through the mesquite. I'm going to have to check the drone thread.

Good morning. This is supposed to be our warmest days of the year. Maybe so later in the afternoon, right now I'm shivering. If I were tougher I would simply wait a few hours for the sun to come out. I'm made of weaker stuff and gave in to the temptation of the stack of firewood and have just lit a fire in the kitchen range.

Or is it at different kind of licence Kekoa wants - did someone tell him his partents were gundogs ?

Here in America a government agency almost never gives up a financial source once on the books. Kekoa is first dog I've had here to get license as technically they don't run free and are exempt. I am enrolling Kekoa and myself in the AKC puppy training course next week which requires the county license and vet shot record. License was $2.10 as the girl charged me the neutered rate ( he will be when old enough).

Nice pic :)
