Looks like it had been leaking which undermined the base and sub base leading to failure. This will lead to an interesting fix compounded by having to repair quickly.

70 plus degrees too hot for early February for sure, strong storms tonight very windy and 30 degrees colder tomorrow. Not normal for sure but friends up north to get pounded with heavy snow and gusty winds

Weekend for us looks warm again a big roller coaster ride for sure

Tile being installed on floor in bath but very slow going herringbone pattern which tile guy says is hard to do. Trying to finish floor before cabinets are installed on Friday. I think he will make it but will be close. Tile will be laid under cabinets as well so if the cabinets are ever replaced at least there will be tile underneath. This project has gone slower than expected but I'm sure we will enjoy the finished product and with two sinks now and two shower heads we can share once again. As we are two only children sharing sometimes is not in our vocabulary

I'm sure there's a lot of pressure to get it done quickly. If the inflows overtake their ability to discharge water through the power plant pen stock, they'll have to open the spillway regardless if it's fixed, or even if they're still working on it. :confused2:

I think there's a pretty good chance they'll try to do a jerry rig to tide them over 'till summer when the water level drops far enough that there's no chance of needing the spillway for months.

But the big question in my mind is how they'd even get concrete up to that hole? Helicopter? Or maybe a looooooong hose from the top of the dam? Hope folks continue with the pictures as the repairs will be interesting to follow.

Good deal, my son is up and at 'em again too...

If I figure it out, I'm going to bottle and sell it.

They have a winding service road a bit away from the damage. Maybe it can get the concrete there. They need some really large aggregate, like 5 foot granite boulders in there to shore it up. They better hurry it up. Cut the red tape, tie the tree huggers to some trees far away and git 'er done.

Good evening all. 50F this morning, mostly cloudy and light wind. Cold front came through earlier than expected, they were forecasting low 60's for a high, made it to 56F, very windy (white caps on the lake) and mostly clear. Men's meeting this morning , followed by phone conference with finance guy, and bike ride this afternoon in the wind. Finished the day with some leaf sucking.

RNG. How deep is that lake? So it's not full yet and they were releasing that much water?

25 right now and the temperature will be dropping throughout the day. The "high" will be in the upper-teens...also looking at another 3-5 inches of snow as a result of the Nor-Easter coming up from the south.
Looks like southern NH, MA an CT are going to be hit pretty hard. 8-12 inches in CT.

Hovering just on freezing at the moment, with lots of birdsong in the air. They must be getting in some early practice for springtime.

Fascinating pics of the spillway. RNG, tell them, if they want to set up a siphon to help lower the water level, I still have some piping going spare :)

I always find standing at the foot of any dam a bit scary, ever since when I was young, I was shown a mark high up on a stone building in Hillsborough that showed the water level when a dam burst higher up the valley. This gives as a bit of history The Forgotten Flood: Sheffield's tragic past remembered - BBC News

California looks to have plenty of experience of this too http://web.mst.edu/~rogersda/dams_of_ca/Dams-of-California-Presentation-2012.pdf

57 degrees in moderate rain, won't be around long, but temps dropping all day to a winter's current low of 24 degrees tonight. Then 60's and 70's this weekend.

Need to go down to the barn and swap out the bucket for the forks. Semi coming today, need to stick around and wait for a call from driver who stops out on the road and I unload the pallet of nut trees there.

It is a chilly -21 this fine crispy morning. The high for the day is supposed to be 14 and flurries in the forecast. A good day to do nothing with the tractor.

I just looked a few minutes ago and the temp is now -22.
