75 this morning and headed to 88 today.

Have some cleaning up to do after my plumbing run yesterday. Most of the rough in is done. Have some framing to do then finish the plumbing. But the old work is cut out and capped. Have some more floor to cut out (about 3 sqft) then can start patching holes. Have a buddy that used to build houses coming to help today. So hope to get pretty far today.

The tobacco info is interesting, never thought about how it is grown before. I don't smoke, but find the smell of unburnt tobacco quite pleasant. Does it smell the same when growing, or only when dried ?

Eric. Tobacco doesn't have the sweet smell until it's processed. Even then that smell is what's added to the tobacco. Actually has a bitter taste.

Other tid bits.
The nicotine can be absorbed through your skin.
If wetted and applied to a wasp or hornet sting. When it falls off all the venom will have been removed. Leaving no whelp or detectable sting site.
There are different grades of tobacco on the same plant. We always stripped it into 3 grades.
When green a stick (5 stalks) can weight as much as 75 lbs. When dry and ready to market you'll only average about 2lbs. Per stick. Stalks are not sold just leaf.
There is air cured tobacco (what we raised) and fire or smoke cured tobacco (probably what you like smelling). Fired tobacco mostly raised along eastern shore.

Much nicer today, and maybe tomorrow, then another week of mid 90's.
Farmer, by "eastern shore", I assume you were talking about the coast in general? Where I live and this whole Delmarva Peninsula, is called The Eastern Shore, it includes the state of Delaware below the C&D Canal, the Maryland counties east of the Chesapeake Bay and Accomack and Northampton counties of Virginia. Here tobacco hasn't been a presence to speak of in decades, more grown over in so called southern Maryland, on the west side of the bay. We had a large resurgence of cotton about 25 years ago, but mostly went away about 10 years ago when the gin was closed.

72F and very sunny here @ 10:45 ... high today around 82F ...

Plan to finish up the brakes on the Sprinter maybe later, after I get a little shade ... sun just way too hot at the moment ... all the tools are too hot to handle.

One of the 13 x 5.00-6 split rim wheels self-destructed yesterday on the green dump wagon we tow behind the Simplicity, so I guess I'm going to have to really put some effort into finding some replacements. May have to redo the axle shafts to lengthen them, since I've had no luck finding anything with a 2" hub width. Will probably have the new ones foam-filled at Ziegler Tire, assuming the cost is reasonable.

Dunno what for today, no shortage of things to do.

Good Morning! 65F @ 8:15AM. Plentiful sunshine. High 84F. Winds W at 5 to 10 mph.

Safe travels to everyone on the road today.

RS, McMaster-Carr has several facilities that must be similar, and each must represent a huge capital investment if your pictures are any measure. No wonder their prices are at premium levels, but the quality of their goods and their fast delivery really help to offset that. Thanks for taking the time to post the photos!

And last time I serviced the brakes on the F250, it was cheaper to purchase new rotors than to get them resurfaced.

Sounds like there's a rich tradition to tobacco farming. I wonder how long it'll be before a similar tradition starts with the pot farmers?

Hopefully that new Jag noise is just a figment of your imagination, Drew. My experience is that noises on luxury cars are always quite expensive.

There is legislation moving in California to legalize and codify lane splitting, and chances are other states will follow suit. That won't stop idiots like the ones you saw, but it will provide clear grounds for prosecution while letting the rest of us save time and perhaps injury or death.

Eric, if I tried to use your super spade on the thistle here, I'd end up with a right leg so big it would make me walk in circles! It was too windy to spray yesterday, so I'll be out right after breakfast this morning.

Started setup on the mill for the cylinder head work yesterday. Fun and games trying to get the combustion chamber centered under the mill spindle and find a T-slot with the hold down bolts. Got close before stopping for dinner yesterday, and will figure it out this afternoon.

Well here the eastern shore is any state that touches the Atlantic except for Florida. And well it's referred to as Florida. :). But yes the coastal areas of MD, VA and NC mainly.

Eric,

My pleasure ... I'm guessing that cost figured into the pattern they choose (whatever was cheap ...)

Drew,

Yeah ... I drove the van over the road (lower 48 and Canada) for about 7 years delivering "expedited freight" ... basically emergency freight, where stuff (usually) had to be picked up immediately and then driven directly to wherever it had to go, often without stopping, except to refuel. Small vehicles (10,000 lbs GVW and below) did not fall under D.O.T. regulations for Hours of Service ... so there was essentially no set limit in writing for how many hours we could drive without stopping to rest or sleep.

It was "exclusive use" ... so the customer contracted the entire truck, regardless of the size of the load ... so I could be hauling something large and heavy, like a turbocharger for a diesel locomotive:

IMG_0782.jpg

... or something as small as an envelope containing a couple of washers or a few nuts and bolts, or a roll of labels.

Basically the need arose from unpredictable/unexpected breakdowns, or from screw ups in the supply chain where someone forgot to order something until it was too late for the normal logistics to get it there in time.

Got some real insight into why some things cost as much as they do (vehicles for instance) ... as the service I (and others) provided wasn't cheap. Go to any auto assembly plant and you'll see a near-constant stream of vehicles providing this type of service being unloaded, or waiting to be.

Billy,

I've tried to take good care of it, at least mechanically ... couldn't afford to breakdown while on a load.

Basically the way it worked was, if you broke down and they couldn't find another truck to swap the load onto in order to make the delivery on time, they might have the vehicle towed the rest of the way to the destination ... with the contractor being responsible for the tow bill

Sometimes, depending on the load/destination/customer, they might charter an airplane, and it would swap and go expedited airfreight ... which was really, really expensive. Had that happen a couple of times where something changed and they needed the freight sooner than originally stated ... or the customer decided that they were concerned it might not get there by the "protect time" (deadline)

The exterior of the van is a little rough (they were notorious for poor paint quality)... needs some bodywork ... mebbe I'll get to that this summer.

Good Morning. 1100, sunny, 92F with 64% humidity. Forecast high of 87F{?} with 60% chance of a thunderstorm today, and a low of 73F tonight.

I got out and picked the last picking of the 1st pea patch and the first picking of the 2nd pea patch this morning. Also cut some really long okra. Also lots and lots of peppers and tomatoes. Skipped picking yesterday, so tons of everything today. Having to work is really getting in the way of my gardening.

I'm back at work now. I think it is a baby shower today. I let the lady in a little early for the promise of cake and ice cream later. Quid Pro Quo.

My Maggette Beckett's Complex is acting up today. Will have to see what's what it when I get off work. {no spoilers please}

You guys have a good one,

Larro

In Florida we call them coasts. As in East Coast, West Coast, and the one near the Larro Ranchero, the North {Gulf} Coast.

Yeah, I commented on the capital investment aspect to my friend while were there ... was the first time he had ever been up there.

No wonder their prices are at premium levels, but the quality of their goods and their fast delivery really help to offset that.
Yup

Thanks for taking the time to post the photos!
My pleasure.

Yeah, I probably could have saved a few bucks by having them turned (assuming there was enough meat left on 'em) ... but I probably would have spent several hours of my time working them over with a needle scaler to get the heavy crust off before I took them in to have them turned.

Better to just replace them ... at this point I've gotten my money out of them anyways.

Good luck on getting that head mounted up.

Sounds like there's a rich tradition to tobacco farming. I wonder how long it'll be before a similar tradition starts with the pot farmers?

The tradition started a few hundred years ago, and Jack Herer is their George Washington. But to see some of the new traditions as they are being made, browse the Outdoor Growing section of RIU. You will meet some of the hardest working farmers in the country.

Until 1937 every major drug company carried cannabis products. My Grandfather {who died in 1938} used it to control his Asthma. He didn't smoke it, but burned it as a smudge.

Many "doctors" of the day hadn't been to medical school either...

Nor for the 5000 years before that that the plant was used for medicine.

But let's be clear, it was industrial hemp that got the laws changed. They used the "it will make black men rape white women" thing just to scare the folks. Like most things in Congress, it was about the money. What got the ball rolling was the invention of a machine that would separate the parts of the hemp stem. Up until then, it had been done by hand. Long and expensive.

Hemp production was neck and neck with cotton after the Civil War. Prohibition was rushed through Congress because three men had lots of money at stake. Du Pont produced the chemical to make paper out of wood, {until then, most quality paper was made from hemp, but cheaper, newsprint was made from wood. The new machine was going to lower the price of hemp paper}. Mellon was his banker, and had invested heavily into the newest Du Pont product, nylon, which was trying to get a toehold in the cordage industry {which was dominated by hemp}. Hearst had bought up millions of acres of tree land {which would fall in value if wood didn't increase it's market share of the paper industry}. So each man had millions of reasons to turn the county against hemp. But it was a common farm product, so they had to come up with something to change popular opinion. Hearst just happend to own a newspaper, so he ran made up stories about blacks and Mexicans raping white women after smoking "Marihuana." Which was a word Americans had never heard. It sounded Mexican, thus scary. We had always called it cannabis, so most people didn't even know it was the plant they had known all their lives.

The rest is history. Billions of dollars spent, thousands of people killed and imprisoned. But the Du Pont, Mellon and Hearst families are doing fine.

Front brake pad and rotor replacement completed. Much better.

Now just need to schedule an appointment with the dealer to have the old brake fluid flushed and the system bleed.

Good evening! Whipper gave us a scare, well gave my wife a scare, I was dazed and sleeping, last night when she went to check on her. Whipper was laying with her legs stretch out not moving or responding to touch or voice. My wife woke me up and said something is wrong with Whipper! By the time I got out of be and waking toward her, Whipper was walking toward me wagging her tail, ahhh good faker. Today she was licking her bandage profusely so we took it off and the wound started bleeding so I had to run to Walmart and get more gauge to wrap her up. She is resting peacefully now.

Good evening all. 76F this morning, did not see the cool down some did after the rain yesterday. Made to 95F (HI 104F) sunny and no rain over night. Church and golf this morning, lunch nap and dirt shoveling at stepdaughter to finish the day. Watch the Tour de France rerun tonight, man the weather was miserable with heavy rain and hail.
