Eric I though that guns were almost not available to the public and most hunters shot air guns.

It's not got quite that bad, although many with no interest in shooting would prefer that.

Firearms and rifle ammunition are tightly controlled and regulated. Anyone without a criminal record and can show a good reason for owning (target shooting, hunting deer, fox and rabbit control - not personal defense and no handguns) can apply for a license from the local police authority and they will grant one if they are satisfied with the mental state of the individual and the security of the storage facilities. Our medical records are now also being coded so that doctors are aware of any individual with a shotgun or firearms certificate and will inform police of issues, such as depression.

In England we can own an air rifle/pistol without any of the above, hence the reason many shoot air rifles, although they must not produce more than 12ft lbs of energy for a rifle, or 6 ft lbs for a pistol.

From next year everyone living in or travelling to Scotland will need a licence to have even an air rifle in their possession and all the hassle that goes with the paperwork. So pleased I live in England, I feel sorry for those north of the border.

Criminals tend not to get too concerned about any of the above restrictions.

Coffee is done brewing. 52° with a few clouds this morning. Heading to 80° with a chance of a late evening thunderstorm. No projects planed for today. Water line project is on hold until neighbor rethinks his plans. May add electric and outdoor lighting at same time. Still waiting for report on doctor's test from the last week.
Good Morning All.

RNG, any pics of the van? Has it lost its head?

And here I thought I was boring you fellas... :D

Gotta admit that putting the cutoff disk through the door pillars and roof involved a fair amount of trepidation, as this is the keeper vehicle. I think today will be the first trial fit of the pop top roof; hopefully the fit is good.

if I call it weed control and shoot the flower buds off a few .
Jolly good show!
Creeping aliens coming to get you and your sheep, maybe you could try full automatic.
Except I'm sure England might take a dim view on "assault" rifles.

another nice day here, getting warmer, a very pleasant 62 going up to 81.
Can't ask for nicer than that.
I took my shirt off for an hour while mowing and got a little tan yesterday.
Well, I was supposed to be at the beach...
And then seemed to have gotten bitten by something on my shoulder which blew
up a bit, acted like a big pimple but it wasn't..., spider? and was down this morning.
Likely got it going under a lot of tree limbs yesterday. Spiders hanging down and you can't see their webs.
I think one decided I was a movable feast. Maybe I'll stick with the open areas for my sun tans.

I might get the last of my sunflowers planted this afternoon. Planting them with one finger, about as manual as you can get. But then I want rows I can
drive the UTV through. All Wngsprd probably had to do was push his electric pto button and his seeds were broadcast. Sigh.

Have the last of my mowing to finish today but am hampered by a bandaged right wrist. Bad problem with carpal tunnel style shooting pains yesterday, the third time made me sit down. Hand braces help; and for sure I'll be driving my JD with my left hand on the steering knob. Of course then my left arm gets tired after a while...
Could have something to do with mowing almost 9 acres every week. I think I need goats...

Criminals tend not to get too concerned about any of the above restrictions.

Here in the US there is a trend to liberalize concealed carry laws that has resulted in many more people being armed on the streets. Some might call it coincidence, but violent crimes in which a firearm was used have declined. Have violent crimes involving firearms enjoyed the same decline in Great Britain since the handgun confiscations and long gun licensing laws went into effect?

Not trying to start a gun control thread here, but Great Britain is often held up as an example of the positive results that result from such Draconian legislation.

Good morning! 71˚ clear skies.
I wondered the same about gun control in the UK and if we stick by the numbers and don't get into political opinions I think it will be ok on this thread.
When comparing numbers with the two countries the biggest discrepancy is how the law enforcements categorize violent crime. Here is a pretty good fair article without political spin. By the Numbers: Is the UK really 5 times more violent than the US?
The bottom line is that it is probably going down in the UK and is now about the same as U.S.

This weekend the ROT (Republic of Texas) rally is held in Austin. Most of the motorcycles from the Houston
Area going through our county so we have to watch out for the extra traffic starting today.

how old is that hose that broke RS?
Drew,

It's the original ... so ten years (2006 ---> 2016)

I have a thread on how long car/truck hoses last, and the opinions are far ranging. Relates to the hoses on my used car, and the mechanic said they were all soft and fine, at 12 years. He did replace the radiator cap which he thought might have been producing the slight antifreeze smell I got in the garage. My feeling is somewhere in the 10 to 20 year range, depending upon many other factors.
Mine are all still "soft" ... but not in a good way ...

Had/have a problem with oil in the cooling system ... it's made the hoses abnormally soft and caused them to swell.

Originally thought it might have been the oil cooler, replaced that, still had the problem.

Next I was hoping it might have been a blown head gasket ... so I pulled the head and had it checked out/pressure tested and had a valve job done and the head milled. Head was fine (no cracks) but I apparently still have the problem ... so my guess is mebbe a cracked block.

I've put over 100K miles on the vehicle since I've first discovered the problem.

Of course my five year old log splitter is now leaking fluid from the lower hose. So that sure didn't last very long; cheap oem TSC part, will replace with something better, likely armored.
Kinda like the tires on my TSC carts ...

64F and partly cloudy @ 08:30 ... high today is supposed to be 80F, with a chance of thunderstorms late tonight.

The trip to Home Depot to pick up the conduit turned out to be a real hoot. How they are still in business defies imagination.

Stuff was bought and paid for a while back, but they didn't have it all in stock ... was supposed to be there yesterday.

We get to the first (of two) store(s) that we need to go to pick it up ... order is not pulled and set aside. In fact, their inventory shows that they don't have enough to fill their part of the order (30 sticks) ... despite receiving 20 sticks in a shipment yesterday. We spent nearly 1 1/2 hours there at the "Pro Desk" while these clueless idiots tried to figure out what was what ... the several people involved in handling this were all walking around like zombies, in a daze.

The bin on the floor has around 9 sticks in it, and the junior associate locates some more in a bundle of assorted sizes on an overhead cantilever ... in the plumbing (not electrical) section.

When he first sees it he sez "Looks like there are 3 up there ..." (looking only at the large bell ends) ... I sez "I don't think so ... more like 7 or 8 ..."

Turned out there was 9 ...

Took them over a 1/2 hour to locate a forklift, another person to spot, clear the adjacent aisle, and pull the bundle down and pull the 9 sticks out of it.

We left that store with 18 sticks ... 12 short of what we were supposed to pick up.

Thankfully, the next store had an associate (a woman) that had her chit together ... order was pulled and we were ready to load within 10 minutes. Didn't even have time to finish my Philly Cheesesteak I got from the vendor in the trailer just outside the store.

This store was one stick short of being able fulfill the entire order, including what we were short from the first store ... so we elected to go to a third store and get the last 12 pieces.

Get to that store and it's pretty much the same deal as the first store ... zombies on duty. Didn't take as long ... but it took way longer than it should have.

Between the experience at Home Depot and the fact that Time-Warner is insisting on 3" conduit to run a little stinking wire from the pole down to the house I've come to the conclusion that the human race is doomed to extinction ... and probably sooner rather than later.

Gotta go remove the MMM and put the loader and backhoe on.

Ed, my wife ran across this fun fact. Interesting!

Fun Fact:
Did you know that researchers have tested a high cholesterol diet on carnivores, omnivores and herbivores. No matter how much dietary cholesterol carnivores or omnivores are fed, they never develop atherosclerotic plaque (plaque that lines the inside of arteries and causes narrowing of the arteries). But, when herbivores (vegetarian monkeys and rabbits were among those tested) are fed a diet high in cholesterol, they easily develop atherosclerotic plaque . Dr. William Roberts, a Cardiac Pathologist for more than 50 years, has concluded that since atherosclerosis is a disease only herbivores can get, then humans must therefore be herbivores!

One last nice mild and dry day, then summer hits. Mid 90's by Sunday, a little cooler next week, but it looks like summer is here for the duration.
Installing a small winch on my small trailer, turned into a big job, mostly my fault, I never know when to stop! The trailer has been modified to open the front 2' with sides tapered in for clearance. The top rail in front is 1.5" square tubing, so I mounted the winch there, decided to add 2 upright braces, that really didn't need, then welded the plate to the tubing, etc, etc...

62 this morning and headed to 94 today. Currently 85. 98-100 forecast for rest of weekend now.

Got out early and ran the tiller through the garden to knockdown the grass. Need to side dress the corn. Currently sitting at the doctors office with the boy. It's his pre-op visit for his tonsil removal. Then go get part for the chicken coops. Go back and finish them. Need to pickup some garden seeds to replant beans that didn't come up. Maybe pickup a push planter to simplify that task.
