Very pleasant day...weather couldn't have been better!
Spent a few hours picking up limbs and such that dropped over the winter....had the chipper/shredder humming right along. Also pulled out an old steel pole that had been used for a satellite dish years ago (when those dishes were considerably larger then they are today). The pole wasn't that deep (30"), but had been erected with a concrete base about 18" in diameter by about 18" tall. Pretty sturdy! It was always something I had to mow around...but not any longer!
Got about half a bucket load of dirt to fill the hole and smoothed it all out with the loader.
Stepdaughter cooked a few steaks for a late lunch...very tasty!

Altogether, this has been a very nice weekend!

Roy, glad you are doing much better.

Drew, your guess is as good as mine. I would say that most fertilizers would stay in the organic "frameworks", but pesticides and herbicides are the big no no's.

My garden is full of nutsedge coming out in almost a full covering. I need to till them in but with the rain, it's a no go. I want to make a broomstick with a wick on the bottom to apply something but sedgehammer in a vegetable garden is a no no.

On tiny phone internet down
Went to store six hours ago just got home
Five inches in an hour
Had to turn around and wait for water to receed
The car coming toward me did not make the crossing
Saw the person abandon the car as watercovered his emergency flashers

What a difference 20 miles makes. So far, we have had about 0.1" of rain and a lot of wind.

TexasYankee. I have a close friend who just last March bought a place in the Springtown area. Somewhat southeast of town. Wonder how his place is????

Wet! We got just over 5 inches (and the majority of the bad stuff STOPPED around 14:30 so ~5 inches in ~7 hours). It's a light rain now, but the weatherman says more on the way. In the city we had sewers, here there is no where for it to go. I have a small river running through the crawl space, yikes!

that sounds wonderful Roy. Hope the good weather continues, going to be in the eighties here the next two days.

I have a question for our organic food experts.
If I plant seeds or plants marked organic, and then fertilize with a dilute solution of Miraclegro,
does that fertilizer do any damage to the organic status? Or does it have to be organic fertilizer?
The top layer of premix garden soil is fertilized also with long release fertilizer. Wondering what the rules are here.
My guess is I've long since gone over the line.

Is that electric fence on the top of the garden? Our garden is close to forested area so rabbits are problem there. Strategically placed owl perch doesn't completely eliminate the rabbit problem but minimizes it to acceptable level. I bolt or weld two tall T posts together and attach about 20 -25" long round piece of wood (1 - 1.5" or so in diameter) horizontally to the top so the owl has something to sit on. Then I use a chain with slip hook and FEL to push it about 2ft in the ground or if possible screw it to a fence post.
Deer problem is another story though. Your electric fence will not stop them for long.

The excrement hath starting smiting my fan!

Now it hath begun smiting my satellite internet and TV.

Sitting on patio, watching this go down. Continuous lightning and thunder. iPad on cellular and listening to Sirrius Radio with cell phone.

Good work Don. Rain seems to bring out the dumb a$$es.

We're getting a break in rain now so, I'm headed to check / dump rain gauges.

Was pretty intense here for last 2 hours.

Had a great hike in the Shenandoah yesterday...7.4 miles roundtrip and 1,700 feet elevation gain...packed my waders and fishing gear...lots of weight, and was able to fish from the rocks without wearing my waders so all that weight for nothing but the exercise, I guess. Beautiful day and lots of wildflowers. Met some interesting people and dogs on the trail, saw 3 bears and 4 deer. Am sore today. Here's a pic of one of the pools I was flyfishing in...caught a couple of brookies there.

I don't smoke, but I enjoy being in the company of someone else who is smoking a really good cigar. Wngsprd, seeing the picture of that beautiful pool where you had been fly fishing was almost as good as going fishing myself. Not sure if you released the brookies, taking a couple home and slowly flavouring them over hot oak chippings, in my imagination that was the passive trout smoking equivalent of the finest cigar.

Good morning all. I missed spending time here yesterday, you know the expression making hay while the sun shines, well I was selling hay before the sun shines - everyone's grass is still in short supply, although that must surely improve soon.

... Instructions are clear, one has to clip the buds off as soon as they form, to strengthen the plant. Apparently those buds take a lot of plant energy to produce and if eliminated the first year, the root structure gets much stronger.

Back in March, when the sheep were really desperate for grass, I let them into an area close to the house where my wife had planted daffodil bulbs last year. With everything growing later this year it would be fine, the sheep would be off before anything broke surface...

munched.jpg

Oops, with tops like that, I had to admit they had been munched. I perhaps could have escaped an extended spell in the dog house if only I'd only read Drew's post earlier and come up with something about making the roots stronger for next year.

39 degrees going all the way up to 81 today, more than a 40 degree rise.
The barometer was at a real high yesterday of 30.41 and is now steadily dropping throughout the week, maybe
getting ready for that system in Texas getting here.

Considering the downpours in Texas, I feel a little odd saying that I will be powerwashing this morning, starting the white plastic fencing out by the road.
Will try to do a little each day; good project when the temps rise. Want to get as much done as I can before the lawn mowing starts weekly. The lawn had started to grow; the freezes stopped it, today at 80 degrees it will be kicking into turbo mode.

51 this morning high of 85 later today skipped spring straight to summer. People in Texas be safe flooding can be very dangerous. Again chance of rain here Friday but afraid it will dry up after crossing mountains. Pollen is terrible with nothing to wash it off will only get worse

No problem Drew, we've been getting "power washed" all night here.

No problem Drew, we've been getting "power washed" all night here.

The last five inch downfall in 24 hours here drowned eight of my fruit trees when the water sat on the ground for days. Now with my new water diversion trenches, I hope if I get what you are getting the water will mostly go someplace else. But you all could get double that, ten inches. Not sure any setup other than sitting on a volcanic rock like David/Sodamo would hold up too well under all that water. The Gulf waters there during the warmer months sure seem to provide plenty of precip for the whole East Coast. The weather radar always seems to show the bottom of the system in the Gulf waters, as if sucking the water from there to bring to us North and East of there. I wonder if it has ever rained shrimp...;) Probably wouldn't make it this far, but Larro might get some.
