Good morning!!!!

Ain't it funny how they just disappear? I have a flock of 35 or so birds that come by every other day till the last week of March and they are gone till fall.

Yeah murphy it is funny how they just travel around. We have been seeing them for the last few weeks. Then like you said poof, gone for 3 to 4 months and then they will show back up. We have been watching this flock grow for about 6 years now. There was a time when they were extinct from hunting around here but they are doing well now. The DNR imported birds from other parts to re-establish them. Back in the late 50s I think it was.
They scare the crap out of the cat!!!

Here is a little history of them in IL. from the IDNR

Wild turkeys were abundant in Illinois prior to European settlement. During the 1800s, unregulated hunting and the extensive clearing of forests were the beginning of the decline of the species. The state legislature closed the state to wild turkey hunting in 1903, in an effort to preserve the remaining populations. It was too little too late, and by 1910 wild turkeys had been eliminated from Illinois.

Remaining forests and woodlands in the southern and western part of Illinois that were too rough for agriculture gave hope for turkey reintroduction in our state. Beginning in 1959, wild-trapped turkeys were obtained from other states to begin our stocking efforts. From the 1970s through the year 2003, Illinois trapped wild turkeys from areas where they were thriving and transplanted them to suitable habitat that had not yet been re-colonized.

Illinois now has wild turkeys throughout the state where habitat is suitable. Harvests by hunters are now reaching their peak numbers, and habitat improvement projects are underway to continue to insure the long term survival of this proud symbol of Illinois forests and woodlands. The remarkable return of the wild turkey in Illinois during these last 50 years has been accompanied by renewed interest in this incredible bird. Each year new turkey hunters enter the woodlands and fields with hope of bagging one of the most prized North American game birds. Veteran hunters continue to participate in the challenge and tradition of turkey hunting while introducing new hunters to this exciting recreational opportunity.

Same here, they will walk up to the floor length windows and look for the cat while making some strange noises. My cat will hide behind a chair and watch.

. . . about our miscreant house guests.

I missed this, must have been cruising. Were you home, any suspects? I got burglarized in Houston, that is when I found out about insurance co. depreciation and deductibles. I got back $600 from insurance coverage and the next week the yearly premium came in the mail - $800. It got me to wondering - why do I have Insurance?
Did you finish the backdrop on the aquarium - I was thing about it while underwater and yes I was holding my breath - but not till you finish.

Wngsprd - this is a very small non creative project.

David S. nice decking, I have the same kind. I just wash it once a year in the spring and forget it.

News on the health line - No more colonoscopies for Canadians because of "long lines" and side effects. New guidelines say routine colonoscopies to screen for cancer not justified - The Globe and Mail

Good afternoon, Some of our neighbors just stopped to say hi. :)

We have a flock of turkeys ranging from 20 to 40 pretty much year round. Our dog
thinks it's great sport chasing them off,
MoultrieCam 375-1.jpg
while our cat either ignores them or tries approaching them out of curiosity!

Sorry for the picture quality. My Moultrie wildlife cam doesn't take the greatest
pictures.

There was some initial mention of the incident here in this thread, but there's an entire thread in the Front Porch on the matter with all the gory details.

Were you home, any suspects?
Yup and yup.

I got burglarized in Houston, that is when I found out about insurance co. depreciation and deductibles. I got back $600 from insurance coverage and the next week the yearly premium came in the mail - $800. It got me to wondering - why do I have Insurance?
Yeah ... I just got done cutting back on our home and auto insurance right before it happened (ya couldn't make it up if you tried ...)

Should end up saving around $1000 per year.

Personally, I still think I'm way over-insured ... but then I look at the prices of stuff today and think they are way, way over-priced.

At any rate, USAA will only allow you to reduce it so far, based on the square footage of the home (replacement value)

I haven't filed a claim yet, still need to stop by the local PD and pick up a copy of the report ... assuming that the officer actually made one. Hopefully for his sake, he did ... but I have my doubts, just based on my interactions with the department ... also based on the crime ledger that gets posted in the small local weekly newspaper ... saw no mention of the incident in the last edition.

Did you finish the backdrop on the aquarium - I was thing about it while underwater and yes I was holding my breath - but not till you finish.
Nope, haven't finished it yet. Am closing in on getting back to it tho' ...

We've had turkeys right in our back yard 30' behind the house as recently as last year, before we got The Squeak (kitten) ... the two older cats have been utterly fascinated by them.

I'm sure Squeak will be fascinated as well.

BTW, The Squeak managed to sneak out in the (closed) garage this past week with the other two cats ... now ya have to watch every time you open the door ... she really, really wants to get out.

That turned out nice David!!!!! That is composite material right?

Wife was complaining the hair dryer was not working. I got to looking and the darn cord was split right at the bottom of the handle and wire was sticking out. God, could of fried somebody. So I solder then heat shrinked it up. It will have to work till her birthday on the 9th. Then it will become a shed tool.

After the turkey left the group of 7 deer showed and then the group of 3. They know it is going to get down into the teens tonight and made sure they got some corn. City folks don't know what they miss out on. Love it out here.
Here they are on 2-12-16 and a buck from last year 1-6-15

I think they are all headed to vote, and I'm not even going to say which candidate it is that turkeys vote for. :)

Nice deck, nice turkeys and deer.

I stayed home today. Replaced an LED floodlight that quit working after the power outage last week.

Spent time with my oldest, home for spring break.

Coming home across the bridge-tunnel from Norfolk saw a nice view of the Chesapeake and Hampton Roads with several ships crossing...made me proud of our Navy as I saw an aircraft carrier headed out, and a cruiser coming in to port right over the tunnel.

A test pilot who survived an amazing 2,407 aircraft carrier landings died a few days ago, at the age of 97. I'm not sure if any of you will have heard of him as he was a British pilot, called Captain Eric Brown. He lead a quite incredible life. Amongst other things, by the time he stopped flying he had flown over 400 different types of aircraft. If you have a little spare time one day, have a search on the internet and read about some of his exploits - maybe with an occasional blast of the Top Gun soundtrack playing in the background, although "Winkle", as Eric was nicknamed, was more partial to a bit of Glenn Miller.
