Good Morning! 62F @ 7:15 AM. Rain showers early then thundershowers for the afternoon. High 64F. Winds SSE at 15 to 25 mph. Chance of rain 100%. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph.
It's sprinkling now, with winds gusting to 20 MPH, increasing over the day. More rain on the way 'till Saturday, for about an inch and a quarter total. Better than nothing, but with the total accumulations drifting back to below normal, we could use a LOT more.
Glad I waited a day on the burn pile. The breeze was from the east, perfect for keeping the heated air out of the tree line, and it was a little cooler to boot. Still had to use a garden hose to keep the flames damped down a bit; the slash in the pile was a year old and very dry. Once it was down to coals I used the forks on the front of the tractor to move the newer slash into the pit and it flared mightily, something about those live oak leaves is very combustible. A real brush rake would have been better, as the fork tines would let a branch slip and drag on the ground, where it caught under the front wheels and pulled the rest of the load off. Took a good upper body workout to get the mess cleaned up, but I could use the exercise. That was three rows of 75' each, all from just one tree. Then I fished some six foot pine logs out of a pile and threw those in, hopefully before the bark beetles had decided to depart. Stacked them around the remains of the stump and they took right off in the coals. Toward the end of the day I used the forks to stir things up and managed to break the stump out of the ground in the process, which was the whole point in putting the pile where it was. By then things were down to a smoulder and I left them that way; I'll see what's left when I go up to check the mail later.
Yesterday's ignition switch repair held up through many restarts, so I guess I can call that one fixed.
Earlier I recounted how one of our campers had been awakened by a coyote tugging on his blanket and sock, and
this news story may hold the reason. Couldn't have been the fly agaric mushrooms, as the desert in Death Valley is way too dry, but maybe peyote buttons?
Happy Hump Day!
