19F with light snow @ 14:45 ... low tonight predicted to be 6F.

Spent most of last night handling the new plants ... water wisteria got planted as a backdrop, with some of it left to float. Tied the java ferns and java moss onto rocks with monofilament line, the ludwigia repens was left to float ... really no place left to plant it at the moment, need to get the other tanks set up. Pulled all the hornwort and threw it in my Homer bucket ... never again ... just dies off too quickly and makes a real mess.

Had to do some rearranging of the rock work as part of all this ... was easy to see that I'm not getting enough flow thru the UGF or circulation in the tank ... too much stuff down in the gravel. But it sure is a lot cleaner than if the UGF wasn't running in reverse flow. Rearranged the rocks so that there are more hiding places.

Tested the nitrate the other day before doing a partial water change, and it read between 10 and 20 ppm ... so mebbe the plants are doing their job. Had very healthy root growth on a lot of stuff. Added another 10 drops of phosphoric acid last night after I finished, to further stimulate it. Be interesting to see what that does, if anything.

Today is the coldest day of the year with a low this morning of 25 and a high of 55 with 25mph winds. Coming home from work and run out to feed critters and this is what I see



So why do goats always kid in foul weather? This Doe had 3 today and another is dilated so should kid tonight. The other 2 should kid in the next 2 weeks. I have been wanting to sell the goats, and now my wife wants to keep the kids because they were born on our anniversary.:confused3:

Goats kid in faul weather for the same reasons Cows calf and humans have babies in faul weather. It has to do with the barometer. Or at least that's the only reason I can give it.

Had a cousin and a friend both have babies within 24 hours last February. Both of them got to stay in the hospital while the rest of us had to deal with 12" of snow. The barometer dropped and so did the babies. They both said labor and delivery was full during that snow storm.

Maybe buppies can give a more weather related explanation.

Welcome to my world. Everything that comes to our place, get a free ride. Food, housing, free medical care. We have a 16 year old goat. He is crippled bad, but he still gets around, and my wife makes sure he gets taken care of. ( meaning me, usually ) I have to admit, he is a likable moocher. He was born here and will die here.

A hard frost this morning, so nice not to get coated in mud while filling the racks with hay.

Had to cut down an old ash tree which was starting to rot in a way that would make it unsafe. It was sad to see it go as it was a very special shape. So special that after cutting, the bottom of the trunk still stood upright - and upside down ! I see Richard has put a "When will it fall thread" in rural living about leaning trees, so I'll put some pictures in there.

Congratulations Kev. At least, unlike farmer, you won't have to decorate a new room for those kids. Being born on your anniversary, I bet they get names. Names = staying. Is that why the one on the right is smiling ?

Good morning, a chilly 12F here with snow overnight, heading to only 23F.

25 going up to only low 40's today in start of very cold stretch.
43 degrees in Boca Raton too......bet all the fur coats are out all over Florida.
I know Kev's wife has her full length mink on today and Larro's wife has a nice Russian fox.
Standard Southern fare...

Forecast is still one to three inches of snow tomorrow. Certainly cold enough.
Found my old pair of fleece lined work pants, most be 20 years old, smaller waistline that I finally could fit in
again. I bet a few of you have those pants on the shelf that might be a little snug...well these fit fine thanks to losing
weight from my tooth escapade. So I stayed warm yesterday and that same pair is back on today. Those old LLBean pants
seem to be indestructible, like Eric's jacket.
