thanks for all the suggestions on the floor jacks. Good idea now that I have a perfectly flat smooth floor. Well....I already have a cheap steel floor jack and it looks cheesy compared to that nice aluminum one suggested. The floor jack has the big advantage of being able to pick up lower to the floor than the "farm jack" or Hi-Lift. But what it won't do as well is pick up say two feet high. And I've found so far the FEL picks up anything well but then one introduces
all the issues of proper strapping, so nothing lets loose. I was working on dirt so that's all I had. Now it's time to make this simpler.

I also bought one of HF's one ton cranes years back, and found it almost useless on garden tractors or z turns because the long legs always got in the way, could not position properly. So I've never been real thrilled with that piece of equipment, though frankly I think it's more for pulling engines out.

So what would i really like? One of those two ton gantrys with an electric winch and manual trolley.
At issue is whether I trust the HF one or drive all the way to Virginia to the closest Northern Tools store and pick up a setup there. Would cost about a grand for all the parts and a couple of strong helpers to put it together but I know right where I'd keep it, on centerline of the shed. Equipment could roll right under it...

Those farm jacks are heavy, but doable for me. Since the lift points for both my Gravely and JD garden tractors are about a foot off the ground,
the incumbent old tech seems to have worked. But that aluminum jack sure looks like it would zip around easily....and a much cheaper solution for 3/4 of the jobs.
And it probably is steadier and won't wobble or lean as much.

I grew up with an old chain hoist built into a beam that ran in front of the main barn building where the big Woods bush hog was kept. Our JD B was one equipment stall over. I always wondered how well attached that big bolt in the ceiling beam was, and I remember using old jack stands way back then. They had come from my grandfather's Ford dealership back in the 1930's. Plus there was a big old 8x8 two footer I would wedge under that mower. And then, without any power equipment at all I would beat on those mower blade nuts until they finally would come loose. My attorney father could not use an adjustable wrench so we weren't exactly swimming in nice farm tools or equipment. Most were ancient and from my grandfather. Like the old floor stand bench grinder that shot sparks out the side when I sharpened those blades. Likely the motor brushes were worn down to the nubs...

Oh to have known then what I know now...

Good afternoon all. 32F this morning and frost on the van. Made it to church, and a relief stint on meal delivery. Loose gas cap on the truck triggered the SES light on the truck, got the usb receptacle in, so not much TMA today :). May try a test fire in the fireplace, have a lot of mud dauber nests in the chimney.

Big frost again, nice today but turning cold for the next couple. All my Christmas stuff has been put away, started a couple of days after Christmas. I like Christmas but when it's over, it's over.

Good Morning. 1015, overcast, 47F with 69% humidity. Forecast high of 54F with 30% chance of rain today, and a low of 40F tonight. I heard it rain sometime during the night, but it wasn't real wet when I went out this morning. Margie cooked a new French toast recipe that turned out very good. I took a plate to Mamma, so I get the good child award for the day. No real plan for the day, other than clean up from the last two days of cooking. Not sure if I will camp tonight or not. I try to go every Wednesday and Sunday, but over the Holidays I have been going more days that not.

You guys have a good one,

Larro

Drew, I guess I need that 2nd cup of coffee. I read that as buzzard kill thousands of cows and threatens Texas dairy business. I have heard of a lot of buzzards killing a cow, but a single one killing thousands? That would make a good plot for one of your imagined movies.

I did the same thing, had to go back and read it a second time!

Kev, hadn't appreciated before just how big she is - what a nice Christmas present. If her appetite matches her size, you are going to get through quite a bit of feed this winter !

Good morning all.

Yesterday we managed a whole hour of daylight without rain. Unlike me, rushes (Juncus effusus) are really enjoying this continuously wet weather, making quite a bit of fresh growth, even though this is supposed to be winter. I cut some back that were invading good pasture and will have to make a more determined effort on them later in the year.

The ground was too wet to take the weight of the tractor. Anyone care to have a guess what I cut the rush with ? Ok, you can have a picture clue - a leaf stem showing cut marks.

42 going to 63

Eric I am guessing you used an old fashioned Scythe. Or what we call a "Weed Whacker" Actually Eric even though she weighs twice what the other horses do, she only eats about 10% more. No it is having 2 horses I neither need or want that will drive my feed bill up.

Well I got the tow bar for the wagon built yesterday, and painted the shafts up. Today I will assemble the shafts and wait on the vet to come by. Hope the harness comes soon!

Good morning! 37
Mom called yesterday with news that a new calf was not eating and starving. So I picked it up put it in the pickup took it to th corral and fed it a bottle and put the mother cow with it. While there noticed buzzards by a down cow - another murdered by buzzards Drew.

Hopefully last day using wife's iphon.

Drinking first cup of coffee. 56° with cloudy skies this morning. Heading to 59° with rain in afternoon. Another try at getting motorhome washed. New service company. But rain may put that off for a few days. Wax job is not going to happen for a while.
Good Morning All.

30 this morning and headed to 36 today. Snow flurries are off to our east, but still pretty windy.

Need to rebait some rodent stations at the chicken coops and then I'll be ready for the audits. Then off to take son to doctor for his post op visit from the tubes. Interesting to see what the doctor says.

Don a lot around here have problems with the black buzzards killing calves before they can standup or the cows while calving. Some even report they are chasing weak or older cows to death. They're reporting them to fish & game in Atlanta. But the Feds aren't believing that they are a problem. Nor do they believe the population numbers. Federally protected birds.

Our farm bureau did secure some tags. But they have a lot of stipulations on them. Don't know how many bothered with the tags.

 Err, no . Think of something a little more potent than a knife.

Eric I am guessing you used an old fashioned Scythe. Or what we call a "Weed Whacker"

I do have an old scythe that is a pleasure to use and occasionally cut nettles with it and also to gather grass to feed the odd ewe who needs some tlc.

Not on rushes though, they are a bit too tough for a non-powered tool.

Keep guessing.
