Nice haul. :)Dunno about those Smart Meters. I have two for my grid-tied system, in and out. The radio reading must have been flakey this winter because the reader truck resumed coming to read the meter manually, but i haven't seen them lately. It does not inspire confidence in their technical abilities with new technology. My solar installer told me they only really need one meter of the type I have but the power co. doesn't know how to program them for net use. :p

The meter man told me that the old smart meter was only able to "see" the closest neighboring meter, then showed me the display with network nodes much farther away as seen by the new one. So hopefully that problem is fixed. He also said he doesn't use that style of replacement meter everywhere because they are much more expensive than the one it replaced. I noticed it had a GE logo prominently displayed on its face; the old one did not.

Whether we like smart meters or not, they're here to stay. It leaves me frustrated that the power utility will do nothing to compensate customers for the inconvenience and financial consequences when the technology doesn't prove out.

BTW, Dave, what happened to AEN?

Dave? Where DID Mr Newman go? Well I started the day mowing the drive and front easement, decided to fuel up the tractor and as long I have the diesel out, might as well see if those old stumps in the back yard are ready to burn... Nope! Well the tractor is all fueled up so I went ahead and finished moving the little pile of trees to the burn pit. It is now ready to call in a permit in the morning and get rid of another pile. This is the larger of the 2 pits and as I said somewhere on here, it measures about 30 foot across and 14-16 ft deep and it is full. Should make for a nice fire. Back pasture is coming in slowly, but full. Watching the weather for rain so that I can go out and fertilize it.

I retired Alfred E. Newman. While waiting for inspiration for his replacement, I put in a pick of the driveway looking toward the road. I had hoped the dandelions would show up better. What could be prettier than springtime apple blossoms and dandelions?

I was supposed to be off for the weekend at noon but the Boss called and said he was bringing me up my computer. No way to put in a time sheet without one.????
Anyway after I got done with him I picked up some steaks for the grill etc. and got home by 3:00PM. Found that the peas I planted are just peeking out of the ground but no sign of the corn as yet. There is a few more asparagus to cut. :). Got to check the food plot to see if anything has managed to sprout there. It has been to dry so probably not yet.

Dave, post that pic inside the thread please, can't enlarge it by clicking on it.
Want to count your dandelions....
nice drive btw...

fireman paver layer ended his day today still not done, but close, redid several sections without me telling him too..., both the sinkhole/soft spots reworked, and now he's about twenty big pavers short. 50/50 mix of square and rectangular pavers and the large ones ran out. I expected the other way, like a big puzzle laying them in the "random" pattern.
It's starting to look good though. He'll finish it on Sunday.

Am off to dinner with my house guest friends, nice place in town I've never been to.
I was hoping to take them to the country club for dinner, use up my minimum, and well, geez, they only
brought jeans. Not on a Friday or Sat night, darn. I think they are pretty embarrassed about it, not packing a pair of chinos...but their trip didn't require it. Or so they thought...no problemo, now they can treat so I'm hardly complaining.
Wayne and I have been close friends for just under 50 years.
And I'm going to let him drive the Ram because he's thinking of either an Ecodiesel Ram 1500 or a Colorado. I think he will find even a 1500 is going to feel really big to a Honda Pilot driver.

Ask and you shall receive. :)

The tall skinny trees are ash. they always leaf-out late but those at the end of the drive are not doing well. They haven't been real happy since cutting the driveway through there back in 2005. Oh well, the emerald ash borer is coming so no use getting too excited about it at this point. They will be power line problems eventually and the power co. maintains that line.

The apple trees are wild and really could use the attention of a pole saw at this point.

Count your dandelions while ye may ...

Fifty years is a long friendship with Wayne. We have friends from almost that far back that we get together with every year. Old friendships are cool. Conversations start-up like you saw them just last week. Enjoy.

The apple blossoms and dandelions do look nice, Dave, but I think AEN is a lot more colorful!:D

Funny how we think dandelions are weeds, there was a time when the kids would pick them and bring mom "flowers".

Now I look at them and try and think of my wife's mothers dandelion wine recipe. One day I will have to try that.

Margie can't understand why I hoe up the volunteer melons that come up in the garden. I try to explain if they are not where I want them, they are weeds. If they had come up in the melon patch, they would be a valued part of the garden. Speaking of the garden, the field corn is about a week behind the sweet corn, but I saw a few tassels this morning.

It's 42F here right now going to mid-30's overnight. Hopefully no freezing of my apple blossoms, and you have tassels. :)

I don't think corn would germinate yet here. The soil is barely warm enough. After tomorrow we get some 70's and 80's.

I like dandelions and most weeds for that matter. I keep some space mowed around the house for the dogs and mosquito control. I think Japanese beetles multiply faster in mowed grass areas than in tall weeds and grass.

Good evening all. 51 F this morning, partly cloudy warmed to about 74F today. Replacement of sway bar link bushings went well but replacement of steering rack not so good. Old one is now out started to put in new, might get it done tomorrow the the muffler shop gets the car. Need to get this done and start packing the garage.

When I was growing up (in Europe) all meadows were dominated by dandelions. I remember when feeding our rabbits they picked dandelions first and then they ate the grass. My mother used to make dandelion honey. She would pick several buckets of the blooms, soaked them in water overnight, then pressed the water out and evaporated it. What was left was dandelion honey. It was used as medicine for sore throat and as sweetener.
There used to be many other flowers in the meadows attracting bees. If I miss anything it is the meadows we used to have when I was a kid.
One neighborhood in Omaha passed a covenant making dandelions illegal in the lawn. They sued a guy who refused to get rid of them. The neighborhood lost because the guy proved that it was his crop.

The clouds should soon be parting and we are set for a day with little wind, so should be very pleasant outside today.

Builders had arranged to move on to another job for a while until the extra 3 tonnes of paving stone gets delivered, expected to come in about a week. It unexpectedly came yesterday afternoon. Too late to keep them here. Ah well, never mind.

This week it was reported that a woman called 911 after she stopped to get a turtle out of the road. The road was State Hwy 21 - 4 lanes, no shoulders, speed limit 70 MPH (112.6 KPH for Eric). She stopped in the middle of the road to protect the turtle while she moved the turtle off the road  but. . . . locked her keys in the car and needed assistance.

You are so considerate, thanks for thinking of me when you did the speed conversion.

I was still at school when the UK started to convert to metric measurement. Our old currency of English pounds, shillings and pence (12 pence to the shilling, 20 shillings to the pound) changed overnight, never to reappear. A lot of fuss at first, but we soon got used to it. Then they changed weather forecast temperature from C to F, which didn't go down well and many still live in a Fahrenheit world, so forecasters often use both units, particularly for hot weather. I quite like Celsius.

Weighing things in kilograms and grams instead of pounds and ounces has gone ahead too and for buying items like food is now standard, although lbs are still well known.

We are supposed to measure short distances in metres now and often that works well, but I still say I am 6' tall and tend to measure anything that needs cutting to length in inches ( I make more mistakes in metres/cm/mm, I think it's the way the tape measures are marked out). If you want to buy something by length, it will always be metres, such as a 50m roll of stock fence. Yards haven't gone away and are still widely used, though to a lesser extent now by younger people. I can pace out a metre easier than a yard, so that's the one I tend to prefer.

Our fuel is sold in litres and has been that way for many years. If you want to know how much fuel a vehicle uses, everyone still says miles per gallon. For some reason unknown to me, English gallons are not quite the same as US gallons. It's probably the only thing that is bigger in the UK than in the USA (about 1/5th more).

Then we have things that never quite made it to metric. Road signs still show the maximum speed in miles per hour. 70mph is the maximum speed on fast roads and around towns it is usually 30mph. Everyone seems to like it that way, the French are welcome to keep their KPH to themselves.

When I used to have a garden and no fields, I spent a lot of time getting rid of dandelions. Now I have fields and little garden, I spend time encouraging them to grow ! Sheep love them. I kept them out of this field until they seeded to get a better crop next year.

38 right now....high of 64 today and clear. Quite cool last night...close to freezing.

I mowed the lawn and the field yesterday. This was the first time the field was mowed this year and the first time I mowed with the 4520. I have a 72" Woods RFM and the 4520's rear wheels are at their widest....about 72" or so. I could definitely use an 84" RFM, but I'm not about to buy one.
I could travel quite a bit faster with the 4520 (compared to my previous tractor, the 4400), but tended to miss more and I'd have to backtrack frequently. I'll get used to it after one or two more mowings. It was rather brisk and cool while I was mowing...also a couple sprinkles. It was nice being in a cab.

Need to pour second cup of coffee. 32° with clear skies this morning. Heading to 73° with lots of sun. Windows are clean on the outside. County has been coating road with Salt Brine for 3 days. That should keep windows clean for awhile. Wife will help with inside one day next week. House has 9" sills on all the windows. Loaded with nice things to look at.
Driving up to Port Huron to pickup Band Saw I bought last week.
Good Morning All.

Good Morning! 34F, sunny and breezy. My outdoor thermometer recorded a minimum of 32F overnight. I doubt that damaged much but we'll see.

Eric we had a push years ago to adopt the metric system for everyday use. They put up road signs with distances in km and now we all own two set of wrenches and sockets--metric and inch. That's about as far as it progressed and the push for common use sort of died out. Metric is the standard for most engineering specs, scientific work, chemicals & medical drugs and dosages, and most products are labeled in both metric and pounds or metric and inches.

Where I grew up in a farming area keeping a weedy patch next to someone's field was not appreciated. Here there is no reason not to have a nice variety of natural/native plants and it is considered a wildlife benefit.
