Rs. Hate your still having trouble with the heater. All I use is Honeywell gas valves. Yet to replace a new one. Now that's the only part to my knowledge that comes from them.
I'll be praying for your continued good fortune ... :D

When the gas valve comes on and it won't light can you take a zippo and light it that way?
Dunno ... I haven't tried it, and neither has the HVAC guy ... so far as I know.

3F. 20F today with possible heavy snow squalls, temps dropping to -16F tonight with NW winds 10-20 mph.

Nice red oak wngsprd. That will be some excellent firewood. Good luck with the splitter start.

8F clear sky mid teens for high.
Temp will fall well below zero tonight along w/howling winds next day or so,I 'm pretty sure Mrs. will have wood furnace purring like new born kitten.

So far very few New Hampshire speed bump/frost heaves, hope January thaw coming soon.

Enjoy the day all.

27 this morning and that's the high should go down to about 9 tonight with wind chill below zero. Tomorrow just as bad moderating for weekend

5F @ 05:45 ...

I continue to be amazed at how well, for having uninsulated block walls, the shop retains heat. Was down the high single digits when I knocked off yesterday morning and the shop was around 60F IIRC. I loaded up the stove with wood and shutdown both flue dampers and the air intakes on the stove. There's enough air leakage at present that you can't really kill the fire if you've got a decent amount of coals and decent wood for fuel.

The high only hit the mid teens yesterday ... and it was still 52F inside when I went up there yesterday afternoon at around 15:00 or 16:00.

An hour or so ago I finally managed to seal up the 1' x 8' hole in the ceiling where I hadn't put up sheetrock yet ... went from 66F to 68F in the room within a couple of minutes.

it's too bad there apparently isn't an analog version of RSwyans' heater vs the electronic one.
After all that trouble, he should just build a new one himself.
A big wood stove is sounding very attractive, as long as you have a big wood pile to feed it.
And you all in the North are in for some brutally cold weather, so I hope all your heaters work fine.

Billy that red oak is dead on for the one that fell down here. The smell of that wet wood while sawing was almost intoxicating.
Big chips piling up on my shoes so I couldn't even see my one shoe. All good.
What's left could easily make some nice lumber, but my wood holders are empty and they
will get filled after this trunk is split. All big wood, everything small landed in the field and was already cut up.

30 degrees here, interesting to see severe wind chill/cold alarms going up for various locations up and down the East Coast.
Supposed to be very windy here today with gusts to 35mph. That will bring the sticks down. That I just picked up.
The endless cycle, but no complaint.

...

Sweet! I can picture this.
20 out this AM. We had a clipper come through NOVA yesterday. It was expected. Unfortunate the timing was right at rush hour. Needless to say chaos was the order of the day. It is amusing when your at home, nice warm and safe. Not so if your on the roads trying to get to work or school. We have delays now in place due to the refreeze.

All be safe.

And thanks for the well wishes and prayers! Appreciated.

Good afternoon.

Weather observers here in the UK have been keeping checks on temperatures since way back in the year 1659.
They have now worked out that 2014 was the warmest ever year in central England, averaging out at 9.9C (50F).

Not sure how accurate the very early readings were, however mercury thermometers have been around for 300 years, so looks like we really are having global warming.

Coffee is brewing. 51° with mostly clear skies this morning. Heading to 74° with partly sunny skies. We suffered with some freezing temperatures last week. Was starting to think I choose the wrong place to spend the winter without a tractor. Especially since the weather has been mild back home. I am feeling better about it now. Those in the cold take care and stay warm.
rswyan, hope they get you furnace figured out soon. I have a beam at home like the one you bought. Was going to build another log splitter. But have no need for one anymore.
Drew, glad you got chain saw unstuck.
Good Morning All.

21 this morning and that's the high. Steady to falling temps all day. Winds up to 45 mph. Windchill advisory out for tonight and tomorrow. Low of 1 forecast and windchills of -10 or more. Will have to turn heaters on in chicken coops today as the floor temp must be 90 by Friday. This is how I get sick every year it's 90 and I'm sweating inside them and single digits outside and I don't bundle up to run to truck for another tool. Let's hope I can break this trend.

Drew. How dar from the ocean are you? Your weather stays remarkably consistent. Not thinking your that much farther south than I am.

Hanging out with the dogs, this am. 1 more cup of coffee, then I will get motivated..... I changed out the goat and chicken water. Colder than heck out there. A good day to stay inside!

With that NW wind and 9 degrees it is down right cold out there.

It is MAJOR cold here in Toronto, and in fact a street person was found dead in a bus shelter in downtown Toronto a couple of ights ago, a victim of the cold. Street people really suffer at these times.

Good Morning! A cloudy 45˚ as the wind has shifted from the North again. It will only get colder today and a low of 24˚ tonight. The coldest night of the season -so far.
It was a warm 63˚ sunny day yesterday and I let the WBS fire die. I'll give it a good cleaning and light 'er up today. Inside Temp is 68, I'm trying to see how long I can go without turning on the central heat.

I looked in Zillow to see how many houses were for sale in our zip code (about 80 square miles) compared to Sun City. There was only one.
Then I looked in our County (629 square miles) there were only 30 houses for sale. I guess they all moved to Texas.

So ... after the kid puts the gas valve in yesterday and gets nowhere he calls Dad (found out yesterday it's a father/son/wife outfit)

Comes back in and says Dad - who was currently busy doing something with some galvanized pipe - will be out in the morning ... and he'll have some test equipment (pressure or vacuum gauge ?) that the kid doesn't have.

Ok, fair enough.

So about a half an hour ago my cell rings and it's Dad ... and he ain't comin' ... ever, apparently ... on the night/day of lowest predicted temps so far this season (-3F for low tonight)

Says he talked to the local Rheem guy and based on what's going on, the local Rheem rep is stumped too. Nothing more to do ...

Can't tell me what's wrong ... other than a bunch of ... maybe this ... maybe that ...

Needless to say the conversation didn't go real well ...

After I got off the phone with him I got to thinking: ... what about my original gas valve ?

I believe I mentioned on this forum that when the kid installed the first replacement valve (which quit working within 24 hours), I didn't realize that he had taken my old valve ... and that I called (less than 24 hours later) the older guy (who as it turns out is Dad) and reported that the furnace was still not working ... and that his son had taken the original gas valve without my permission and that I wanted it back.

Dad sez "No problem ... it's still on his truck ... we'll get it back to ya ..."

They never did ... despite my asking about it again after that.

So I called Dad back this morning after our first call, and asked "Where's my original gas valve ?"

He apparently thought I was asking about one of the replacement valves and replied "We have to send those back to Honeywell for warranty"

Ahhh ... no Pops ... my original valve ...

"Oh ... that's long gone ... it's been scraped ..."

To which I replied "So you f'ed up that too ?"

This is the first time I have ever used that type of language with/at these guys ... despite several months of their failing to demonstrate their competence by fixing - or even just properly diagnosing - my furnace.

Needless to say, Dad was not pleased.

But his reply/explanation was rather telling:

"Do you realize how busy we are ?"

Umm yeah ... actually I do:

"Too busy to keep your word once given ... and clearly too busy to take proper care of your customers ..."

It sounds like they are busy because they never get anything fixed.

Even here in Deep South, a good day to be inside. Oh me, I canno' wait for spring to come! Reckon it's warm here, 36° or so, yo y'all boys up north, but cold to me old bones.

   / Good morning!!!! #28,679
Good Morning. 0945, sunny, 47F with 93% humidity. Forecast high of 55F with 0% chance of rain this afternoon, and a low of 21F tonight. At about 0815 {when the phone woke me} the sun melted the frost on the roof and the water was playing a rat-a tat-rat in the downspout. Glad I got my outside stuff down yesterday. It will be cold and windy today and tomorrow. I've got a pot of chili on my mind.

You guys to the north stay safe and warm,

Larro

Chilly morning to all, 13F hearing with a wind chill of -9F. Glad I work inside.
