Ted, putting a fireplace in a residence in this area has now become more complicated.
Humorous when you think that 200 years ago the local residents needed fireplaces or they would
have froze to death.
If I owned this cottage, I would immediately put a woodstove in the living room, which is the coldest room.
Currently at 64 degrees in there, on a cold day for sure, when thermostat says 71 in kitchen. If I want it warmer in
there have to turn on electric fake fireplace, which looks just like a wood stove. After several hours that might get the room up to
70, if I had company. Which I usually don't, and my flowers sitting in the sunny window seem to like that temp just fine.

It's the radiant heat feeling, the sit by a campfire feeling,
what I feel is a more natural heat.
Not more efficient, tech has surpassed it,
but just a different feel.
I think it's pure cave man genes.
We want to face the warmth,
warmth kept us alive
boy they sure had bad hvac back then...

Drew do you really think you need to go back 200 years. That would only be in 1820's. Many places didn't get electricity till well after the 1920's and actually into the 50's in some rural areas even in the northeast. When I was out in Idaho some of the more isolated areas didn't have commercial electricity in the late 1980's.

When we stop and think many of our modern conveniences where not common in many places. My mother and father were born in the 1920's and 30's and they were in or close to their teens when commercial electricity came to many in this area. Without electricity most people didn't have indoor plumbing, most of the heating was kitchen stoves, room heaters (wood or coal) or large furnaces in dirt floored basements with a single large grate in the first floor and maybe a small one to the second story.
I'm only 72 but remember taking a "bath" in the kitchen laundry tub. We did have an inside toilet located in a "water closet", there was also an out house in the back yard. It was nice to move to the new house in the 60's.

good morning all. At least it was morning when I started . 15ºF for the start, clear sky light breeze. no men's meeting this morning for obvious reason. Did get coffee made, insert ash cleaned out and restarted. The cold weather is abating, will ride inside today and plan to ride outside tomorrow. Have more estate work to, and have some Fidelity work to do. Apparently I missed what drove Ron off, hope he comes back soon

An advisor friend recommended that to me, a long while back. I am though a re-dedicated .xlsx format user.

Wish I knew of a method to auto import Bank data into my spreadsheets.

Lou, you are so right. 77 here, but can relate. I remember both grandparents having outhouses up until I was grammar school.
Maternal grandmothers we weren’t allowed to use the indoor toilet except nighttime or inclement weather. My paternal grandparents never had a full bath, toilet bowl only until sometime grandfathers passed a shower was added. All us grandkids had a bath or two in the long cast iron kitchen sink. Even my own parents rented a house when I was about 4 with an outhouse. One of those foggy childhood memories from that time was something of a serious overflow in the inside bathroom. Memory isn’t clear which fixture just parents were extremely upset for a few days and not being allowed to use.
Back in the oil crisis days, our house in Maine was hot air, oil fired heat. Became very expensive. I actually replaced the kitchen electric stove with old fashioned kitchen wood stove obtained from MIL’s shed. Cook and heat via wood in one appliance. Bank with coal for overnight.

Excel can import directly from a bank of it is set up to do so on the bank side.
We used to do this with banks and stock data feeds many years ago.

Mostly replaced with APIs and direct web interfaces, which would be difficult for the common person like me to utilize.

Thanks for the budget app comments. I too have the old files with data going back years. Not in same detail as Dennis but have found them useful from time to time. Think I have found 3 or 4 apps I need to check out further. All but 1 have a free trial period of 1-2 months. 1 also has a demo file. Need to determine a sensible approach as maintaining a full blown budget for each for a month or two sounds like work.

No plans for the day. Just take it as it comes.

Appears Excel uses Plaid to import, which is great except the subscription for Excel. Might just as well pay subscription of already written app.

Same here. Guess that’s a benefit of finally reaching point where month ends ahead of the money. Pre pandemic I was on a kick of following food, groceries vs eating out. Was interesting to look back to see where we had eaten or how long since we had been to a particular restaurant.

The kids actually, still need a budget. They expanded the still have checks = still have money to credit card not declined = still have money and severely over extended themselves. When asked what they had to show for it they couldn’t identify anything. Currently scheduled to be debt free, except mortgage by Mar. Need to transition them this year to a savings focus while staying out of debt. Kinda see it as something we must have missed in early parenting so having to make up for it now. As a young adult I never had a credit card like today. Closest thing was a store or gas card. I remember going to Sears back in 92 to payoff balance early and the girl gave me a hard time, tried to talk me into just making the payments.
Times change.

Ok, another step done.... got the shelf brackets installed. Cut the shelves to length, sanding will commence tomorrow. Then stain will follow. Probably won't get to install until Thursday----
Wifey doesn't like the overpowering smell of the stain.... 24 hours later, it's not bad at all.

Here's a couple of pics of the brackets. Couldn't get both walls in the frame at the same time. I'm hoping the span over the windows will be ok.... pushing almost 4'. Not really any weight will be on them.



The shelves will wrap 3 sides of the room.

Put some burgers and beer battered fries out on grill..... hit the spot for sure. But, now too stuffed to do any more work....

Back in my Army comptroller days I had responsibility for Programming, but in this instance it meant forecasting budget requirements for future years 1,2, 3, 5, and beyond depending on the color of money. Basically what that means it certainly funds are restricted to be spent on specific items related to specific functions,ie a certain program might pay manpower for certain positions or pay development of certain functions or equipment but not others. Anyway we had one intelligence program that 1 year all was in a massive Excel file (Mac as windows excel hadn’t been invented yet). Just to operate the program (and not break it) was a massive learning curve. The finished product was awesome. Of course that program was written only for that money, non of the others. Fun days

David, I don't think you missed anything parenting.... Out of our 3, one is very financially stable. He is the one with the LEAST amount of guidance.

The middle one ended up almost broke, (we think mainly because of his ex), but has turned his finances a full 180°, now having more money and less debt than we do! All done over 2 years (Since his divorce).

Still trying to get #3 on a budget.... multiple times. Lasts a few months, then back to old habits. Don't know what else to do. They dug out once before about 10 years ago... then fell right back into the hole..... I am guessing they will need a rude awakening some day......
