I feel sorry for the folks with EVs that are stranded since the batteries are too weak from the cold.
I'm not really. It was their choice to buy 'em. Think "three piggies and the wolf" story. Build a strong house. Be prepared.

Good morning/afternoon, the low temp is 12 and going to a high of 18°F. Wind W 11 gusting to 19 mph. Snow squalls with a weather advisory.
They think another 4 to 8".

I still haven't sorted the heater blower out yet. I think when I pull the connector apart that goes to the cab, I will hit it with Deoxit and maybe put some dielectric grease in the female side.

I would have posted earlier but my num lock was on and I didn't know how to turn it off. Junior sorted it for me. Now I know.

I'm going out to plow in about 20 minutes or so. I figured out that if I don't have any interruptions (neighbours wanting to talk) I can plow all 5 (picked up another one) in one hour and then spend 2 hours on this place, for a total of three hours plowing.

This township wants $100. per thousand of cost to build So to build my Quonset hut garage (30x50') will cost me only for the permit $1,000.oo. Then after it is built they will bend me over the barrel and stick the taxes right to me. Quonset hut is what I want but I may end up with a pole barn, same dimensions.

You guys experiencing the cooler temps try to stay warm and safe.

Todays heater blowers don’t have much startup torque so when bearings dry out and cold temps makes it worse they fail to start
Try to bang it with the back of your hand on startup and if it moves that is the problem

I will try that, but not today. I just made an executive decision, not plowing until tomorrow. The squalls will be done late tonight.

Good Afternoon Guys,
Ct, 10 to start going to 22 ! The sun is bright so not too bad in the sun working outside today !

Drew, the wholesale price at the oil terminal in New Haven, Ct was $2.57 today !

Don, glad to hear that your on the final leg of your PT ! You went through a lot to get at this point !

When I built the barn on my Vt property, 28 by 44 I didn’t even have to submit a permit ! That was 2010 or 2011 ! If I did the same thing in Ct, I would have to jump through some serious hoops ! 😉

Bill, hope you find your short ! Frustrating stuff for sure !

Time to go back to work, all have a good day ! 🙏

Back from grocery, gas and diesel trip. No fun pumping fuel in -1° and 20 mph winds. It’s done. Now drinking a hot cup of apple cider.
boy I'm with you, was out putting ice melt down, then got to filling the bird feeders, again, and my hands got so cold I had to stop and warm them up. I bet that gas handle was mighty cold

I did some driving over in NJ today, wow do they put down the salt. Clouds and clouds of salt billowing behind the gravel trucks.
Do that a few times and one will need a new air filter.
My old Ram truck would quiver in fear if I took it over to NJ in the winter, it was already a rotter unbeknownst to me and it was talking to me, stay away, stay away. Not much different over here on main roads but Joisy has always loved its salt
too many attorneys ready to sue?..............

speaking of which my walkway is bone dry and one coat of salt on shoveled driveway is softening it up a little. Bright sun out
so wanted that to work on the chemicas. Still below freezing and cold tomorrow so it wasn't going anywhere fast. And each time I drove on it,
it got icier.

got a laugh over at Nieces Lumber in Lambertville NJ, stopped there to pick up another bag of ice melt.
Two skids on front porch as you come in, rock salt in one, pet safe in other. Most of it gone.
So I went in and told very nice lady I'd like to pay for one bag of pet safe. Yes sir, 23 bucks and if you'll drive over to
the XYZ area, we can help you out.
um, Ma'am, you realize there are skids of this stuff right out your front door? I'd like one of those please.
oh dear, well surely don't listen to me
we all got a laugh but bit of an eyeroller also.

Wow everyone, keep warm! I just read posts quoting 7F, 10F, 11F, and 12F degrees in various places. Very cold and widespread!

A rainy soggy 39F going to 47F here in Formerly-Great California.

Wife and I are going to walk the property today evaluating the merits of building a 2nd residence. Before, restrictions were suffocating and expensive. Although we have nearly 100 acres and just a single residence, a base building permit to add a small 2nd residence started at $36,000, then onerous demands for expensive road improvements and lot more got added. No-go. A fresh new State law curtailed much of the County's power to deny permits and demand excessive fees. It's my understanding we can now build a 1,000 +/- sq ft 2nd residence for a $16,000 permit fee, no other demands, and most importantly, the County can no longer refuse to issue a permit. So, we will walk the property and kick around ideas about that.

Sounds like here. Topic of the day is always “affordable housing” whether directly or indirectly. Biggest impediment to affordable housing is all the rules that stifle the opportunity.

Our zoning and regulations here are suspect too.

I cannot have a trailer on the property for live in purposes, even if I construct something.

I do not have to file for permits if I build an agricultural type building.

I chuckled to myself as I was reading various rules and regulations as I concluded that I could build something like a house and claim it was for feed storage by sticking a few grain bags here and there.

Currently 29 outside, thankfully no wind.

too bad Buppies your heat pump doesn't have dial in diagnostics.
We could put Popgadget and Kyle on it, and have you fixed right away.

Ted, putting a fireplace in a residence in this area has now become more complicated.
Humorous when you think that 200 years ago the local residents needed fireplaces or they would
have froze to death.
If I owned this cottage, I would immediately put a woodstove in the living room, which is the coldest room.
Currently at 64 degrees in there, on a cold day for sure, when thermostat says 71 in kitchen. If I want it warmer in
there have to turn on electric fake fireplace, which looks just like a wood stove. After several hours that might get the room up to
70, if I had company. Which I usually don't, and my flowers sitting in the sunny window seem to like that temp just fine.

It's the radiant heat feeling, the sit by a campfire feeling,
what I feel is a more natural heat.
Not more efficient, tech has surpassed it,
but just a different feel.
I think it's pure cave man genes.
We want to face the warmth,
warmth kept us alive
boy they sure had bad hvac back then...

Scootr, great idea, will get my wizened old lady neighbor across the street to ride with us,
she can be moaning I'm out of oil, I'm out of oil (she would be up to it also)

In all fairness, they followed the existing ordinances, including the mechanisms for relief by exemption or variance. I don’t think that I was treated unfairly, but I agree that in simpler times the ordinances might not have existed.
And I thought that ours were too intrusive and expensive;

I thought that was one reason "barndominiums" became so popular.

David,

Look into "You Need a Budget". YNAB.

An advisor friend recommended that to me, a long while back. I am though a re-dedicated .xlsx format user.

The website is ynab.com

Yup, DIL also referenced. Currently #3 on my shortlist.
My current, still to be explored thought are limitations and seems more manually intensive. Maybe OK for the kids, but not what I want for Sophie.
So far Copilot Money and Monarch are prime contenders. Look like they do everything in YNAB plus.

Find in interesting, but not surprising that so many of us use spreadsheets. One of my evaluation criteria is ability to import/export CSV files.

Going back to Visicalc days I just had a hard time getting my head around mixing Letters and Numbers in same file other than text, then it finally clicked, each of those little cells is independent until you create a relationship. I even taught a few Lotus 123 classes back in my Army days.

Wish I knew of a method to auto import Bank data into my spreadsheets.
