Public service announcement for new Texas residents:

If you are new to Texas, we are about to experience “Texas Winter”. This is 6 or 7 days of cold, maybe some ice and snow. They will threaten snow. It may snow, it may not, and if they say 2 inches it could be 10 or it could be 1/2”. It doesn’t matter how much snow it is, we’ll all freak out because we don’t see snow often.

The threat of snow (or ice) is your prompt to head to the grocery store and buy milk, eggs, and bread. It doesn’t matter if you need these items. It’s just what we do. Everyone in town will be there. You’ll also need to make a mad dash for faucet covers and finding them and getting out of the store will be like an episode of the hunger games.

You’re in the redneck district. Don’t look for a sled. You won’t find one. In the rare chance we get enough ice or snow to sled grab some cardboard or a trash can lid and go find the nearest hill. Yes, we know it’s not a hill. You live in the flatland, just go with it. You’ll be alarmed by the fact that you’re “sledding” towards a bar ditch, fence or maybe into a farm to market road. Just go with it. You’ll be fine.

We don’t have equipment to handle the winter and weather. The roads will be a mess and even though the state has been telling you for a week they’re ready, they’re not and it won’t work. Just stay home if you can and if you can’t just come to terms with the fact that nobody here knows how to drive in snow and ice. Whatever you do, DO NOT talk about snow tires.

If you happen to slide off the road or get stuck, turn your flashers on, take a deep breath and wait. Two guys in a four wheel drive truck will be along in no time to offer assistance. Don’t try to help them, they live for this stuff, and will do what they can to get you back on the road. If either one of them screams “hey y’all watch this” just get back and get your phone out and start recording, you’ll probably have a viral video. Also of note, when they offer you beer and deer jerky, don’t be rude, take it and smile. No matter what you do, don’t talk about how they did it back home in any of these scenarios. Nobody cares. You live in Texas now. When we act like we’re going to die and start to complain about the 7 days of winter just don't say a word, we’re serious and we don’t care how much you love it. We don’t. You’ll be back in shorts and flip flops in a week to ten days.

If you recall about ten years ago, or so, when that 2” snowfall shut down Atlanta for three days?

the Oconee County Sheriff put out a notice on the Official Facebook Page, which I will attempt to replicate as best I can:

There is a bad winter storm coming.
Stay home.
None y’all know how to drive in this stuff.
If you don’t have to go out there, don’t. You’ll just land your ass in the ditch.

I remember one year back when I was living in Seminole and working at Denver City Tx. We got hammered with a snow storm it dropped about 12 inches over night. I had to laugh many times that day on the way into work, I left over an hour early for a 20 minute drive and got in well over an hour late. I was driving an old 4 door ford F350 2wd with a hot rodded 390 in her. The only saving grace was I threw close to a 1000#'s in the bed and I had chains from my Idaho and Wyoming days, it was a romp in the park for that truck the trouble was all the stuck trucks and cars in the way.

I moved here from the Chicago area, when I retired, to be close to the grandkids. The weather here is about the same, but maybe a bit more wind, than the "Windy City"... (that nickname is more about the politicians there blowing hot air, than the weather).

Not just Cummins??? Current case is just Cummins. Cummins was involved in the 1998 settlement of 7 different engine manufacturers. Part of the 1998 settlement was that Cummins would reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 2025. Maybe somebody at Cummins thought they could slip one by the EPA to...

I have costco executive membership. I easily get back more than the yearly fee, usually $400 or so.
Had my long overdue yearly physical today. took months to get this appointment. Will get blood results in a few days. I forgot about asking for Vit D test, don't think they normally include that one.
Mission BBQ for late lunch since I fasted and was very hungry.
Filled porch pellet box, so ready for next weeks cold weather. Noticed the wind seems to be getting colder. Was sunny this morning, now overcast. rain due tonight. calling for 3" snow monday-tuesday of next week.

All this talk of Costco....never been in one.. I always thought it was bulk purchases aficionados. Never h a d the need for that. Am I missing something?

...and I go to Walmart for cat food.. that's the only place that stocks the food the cats like... other than that....I cannot say what else I purchase.

Groceries are between two local businesses....a Harris Teeter and a Giant..probably local/tegional..regional.

Are you all bulk purchasing or are the deals at Costco and Walmart that different?

Fairly different merch mix as far as I see it. I think Costco is better quality on most things that I buy there.

RNG, the Costco Exec mbrshp 2% cash back breaks even at a $250 per month spending rate. With two of us, that's easy, and especially in years of a major purchase, such as tires, or the new washer, or Polywood Adirondack chairs we ordered online last year. Some purchases don't qualify, such as that Jim Beam.

Good (Saturday) morning. Overnight Low of 20.5C and it's presently only 20.8C, overcast and 'windy'. There was a surprising 1.0mm in the gauge @ 0900. Yesterday's temp topped out at 34C!

Yesterday's tasks/projects completed prior to the soaring temperature, and the Doctor appointment went quickly and I was home by 1730... of course there will be a follow-up appointment (in Launie) come February. Once these 'specialists' get their hooks into you there's no letting go.

Nothing really 'on' for today.

Strong wind gusts resulting in significantly reduced visibility in blowing snow. Timing:This evening to Saturday afternoon. Discussion:Snow is forecast to begin this evening and will quickly become heavy at times tonight, before transitioning to periods of light snow Saturday morning. Strong easterly winds gusting up to 70 km/h (42 mph) will combine with this heavy snow to cause significantly reduced visibility at times. In the wake of this system, much colder Arctic air will become established across the region. A multi-day lake effect snow event is expected for locations east of the Great Lakes bringing additional snowfall accumulations to some communities. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
