I had the good fortune to briefly meet Carlos Santana and Buddy Miles, around springtime of 1972, near Milpitas, CA. A Chicano friend I’d met going to business management school for Enco, now Exxon had an older sister that was friends on some level with Carlos. Miguel rode to class with me, I drove in from Stockton everyday. His parents owned a huge Enco station at the intersection of two major freeways, and they lived in a huge house with a multi car sized garage. One day we had been to the refinery in Benecia to tour the facility as part of our classes, when we got back to Miguel’s house there was a nice conversion van parked there. I’ll skip to the good part, in the garage Carlos Santana and Buddy Miles we’re jamming away with a local Mexican or Chicano Latin rock band. It was a Friday afternoon and we hung around for a while being awed. Carlos I believe lived in NorCal, not sure what brought Buddy there. As I recall it was just before the album, Carlos Santana and Buddy Miles Live, was released. It was recorded a couple of months or so before. I had just gotten back from SE Asia the previous fall. Miguel was critically injured in crash on his Sportster a couple weeks after that and I never saw him after that. I talked to his mom on the phone for several weeks, then lost touch.
The only other real celebrity I saw in my time in California was George Liberace, brother of Liberace.
