"... I've learned a lot from Don over the years and am appreciative for the information. It has genuinely changed my eating habits.
But not enough to avoid a nice steak or burger once a week. The difference now is I buy turkey burgers and salmon burgers too, so only one out of three is red meat. My cholesterol is within the range, I also eat a big salad at least three dinners a week. And lots of apples and oranges. But bring a cherry pie within a mile of me and it's like a magnetic attraction..."- Drew

I went from a decent healthy diet to a better diet thanks to Don and the information shared here. Healthy eating in mind, prepping decent meat/oil substitutions takes a little more work for me. There is less "bad" and more "good" in all my recipes now. Wifey and I eat a fresh (as possible) fruit salad daily and veggies. The meats we buy are increasingly more local, humanely raised, free ranging, drug-free, and organic which is probably easier for us due to living where we do. Posting this, I admit to eating a lot of "bad stuff," but now in serious moderation.

Wow, lots to read, and i was only gone 23 hrs.

Bad storms, sad for the loss of life.

We only got 3" or so of snow. Now for the cold. Stocked my pellet box tonight with a quarter of a ton.

Here it's fastnachts day on shrove tuesday (aka fat tuesday, aka kinkling day) . I dont follow the non biblical concept of lent, but i do like fashnachts.

Saw a lady at work today who i used to work with years ago. Was nice chatting again.

My dads parents lived to be 90, they ate a bunch of lard and fried everything. The difference is they worked nonstop. They also didnt eat processed stuff.

Keep warm.

My ONLY concern is that, being a bit of a sissy, I hope to avoid pain as much as possible.

Oh no, you can't take the sissy title away from me. If you can't change your eating habits to get away from pain then I win, because I do.

Ron all the $49 SW airlines tickets to David's coffee plantation sold out yesterday.

You can use whatever oil or fat you like, you can also substitute cornmeal, white or yellow, or mix the flour and meal, like I do. I don稚 do the balls, I drop mine with a large spoon.

Ingredients
4 cups all-purpose flour1/2 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon baking powder1 1/2 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)4 cups shortening for fryingAdd all ingredients to list
Directions

Combine flour, salt, and baking powder. Stir in 1 1/2 cups lukewarm water. Knead until soft but not sticky. Shape dough into balls about 3 inches in diameter. Flatten into patties 1/2 inch thick, and make a small hole in the center of each patty.
Fry one at a time in 1 inch of hot shortening, turning to brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels

We have determined the nutritional value of oil for frying based on a retention value of 10% after cooking. The exact amount may vary depending on cook time and temperature, ingredient density, and the specific type of oil used.
