Buckeye, hope your wife's aunt got to help quickly. It is so important. Hope for the best.
Ovations are nice. Most all brands build price point guitars. Taylors, Takemines, Yamahas, Martins The list is long. A friend of mine sent me a link on a Taylor he saw on Facebook. In 45 minutes it had 90 looks. I told the guy I'd be there with cash in the morning and if it was in good shape, I'd pay his asking price. It was, and I got it for less than half price of new $400. It sounds beautiful. My old Takemine was the last guitar my deceased brother (who was an accomplished player) bought. He bought it used from a friend of his, and I'm guessing that that guy bought it used....For me, it is sentimental, so I will never sell it. It has a lot of "character" or knicks and scratches.
LS, is old is your grandson? Will he haul a guitar around with him? If so, don't spend a fortune. If his hands aren't fully grown, he might not need the type with the wider neck. 1 11/16" nut width is a good size neck unless you have fat fingers, then a 1 3/4" nut width might be a better fit. You can actually buy a decent acoustic for $200., but it will be imported from probably China. If he plays a lot, then maybe get him something nicer. A lot of young people tend to take better care of stuff if they buy it themselves. (not telling you anything you don't know). If you find something used, take somebody you know who plays, with you to check it out. Check the action, meaning the string height and look for "buzzy" frets if they are too low. They can be set up higher. Or lowered if they are too high. There are ways to check the neck's bend, and if it needs to be tightened or loosened. Sweetwater, MusiciansFriend are a couple of places that sell a lot, Reverb comes to mind too. Ok rambling too much.....
