Good morning!!!!

49 outside this AM. Expecting low 70's today.

Running behind on lots of projects and whatnot.

On Walnuts, there is English and Black. What you see in the store is mostly English. Easier to crack. But, not as healthy as Black. We have Black Walnuts on the property. Just yesterday I gave away three grocery bags full of them, with husks, to a friend. That's from one tree, and it still has about 1/2 way more to drop. They pose a danger walking under them, rolling your footing, getting bopped in the head. Not kidding. The squirrels move them all over the place, another fun fact. They end up in the weirdest places. Tube of satellite dish, engine compartments, barn and outbuilding walls, Milk House attic..... and yes, they are hard as all.

A nuance tree IMHO. Around the house anyway. The husks are messy to deal with too. And anything under the tree does not do too well. The decomposing husk is rather toxic to grasses.

On the lighter side, if you have a lot of time on your hands, they are pretty tasty. A good 2X6 with a nice hole it it and a hammer works well. Wear gloves and eye protection.

Time to tend to the animals and get the equipment ready for pasture and fence line maintenance.

Hope all have a great day. Be safe.
Black Walnut is tappable for sap to make syrup, the same way maple is. And it is VERY yummy!!!! The sap is less sugar-saturated than maple sap, so it requires a longer boiling time, but the result is wonderful — it is different than maple, which everyone is used to, so it is a pleasant surprise upon first tasting.

The farm was built with American Chestnut trees. The huge beams in the barn are very impressive. The blight wiped out the American chestnut 100 years ago and the Chestnuts on our property are the Chinese variety that is immune to the blight

Good Morning Guys,
45 to start going to 65 !

Looking 4new,thanks for explanation ! Sounds like you do that for pain management! Not passing judgement on you, just wondering what rules our northern neighbors have ! Thanks !🙏

All have a blessed day !

Good Morning!!!! 61F @ 6:00AM. A good deal of sunshine. High around 80F. Winds NW at 10 to 15 mph. The rain predicted in yesterday's 10-day has disappeared.

Spent most of yesterday shuffling furniture and equipment in the CAD app, trying to fit ten pounds of stuff into a five pound bag. The garage was especially challenging. I did get a batch of chili going though. It smelled wonderful yesterday, but even though it's been slow cooking all night, I can't smell i now. I never tested positive for Covid, but now I wonder if I might have had one of those cases that never presented any symptoms. Except for a flaky sniffer.

Hang in there, gang, Friday's comin'!

We can grow up to four plants per adult (over 19), which I don't.There are no green thumbs in this house. Don't get caught driving with a joint or bulk within easy reach of the driver. That goes for alcohol, too. NONE in commercial trucks even if you have a sleeper.

A nuisance tree, for sure! I have about 12 old/big walnut trees, and hate them. Good shade, but a real mess and danger for walking, and they produce juglone, which is toxic to many plants. I've tried lots of options for the nuts, and have settled on a shop vac with extension cords, into the tractor bucket, to the burn pile. Not enuff squirrels here and the deer don't touch them.

lot of responsibility driving a car, a motorcycle, a big truck out on the road.
None of us with a conscience want to hurt anyone.
Impaired is a relative term.

I have driven truly impaired. My BP read 90/45 in the supermarket parking lot in NC, almost didn't make it back
to truck, and I took BP when I got home. Finally found out medicine for my tinnitus was drastically reducing my BP.
I should have sued that ENT for almost killing me. Very dizzy.
Never should have driven, but I live alone and...frankly, your reasoning gets impaired too.

Not like drinking or taking recreational drugs makes anyone smarter.
Pretty sure we can all agree on that.

I watch a lot of youtube accident videos and much of what I see is totally preventable with better defensive driving.
Defensive driving means you have to be sharp and aware of your surroundings; that's what I think goes away when impaired.
You can't react to anything out of plain driving the car down the road. Throw something bad into the mix and the accident becomes
unavoidable.

I want to be sharp driving so I avoid the bad drivers on the road with me.
Don't worry so much about my own driving...except backing. Sigh.
Every intersection is a potential accident, every approaching vehicle has an arrival time, and unless you are very aware,
I think you miss those details.

So you may not have done anything wrong yourself but you are less able to avoid an accident.
And surely if one has been drinking, it usually brings out the competitiveness/combativeness in folks.
Most folks who use some form of cannabis drive slower.

as far as hash, I think my only and last enjoyment of that marvelous product from Morocco at the time
was in 1971, senior year at college. It had the most wonderful exotic smell, not the skunky or skanky odor of pot.
You got little chunks of it wrapped in tin foil.
Strongest stuff I ever tried, then or now.

if we think the world is nuts today, relive the late sixties and Vietnam. Then it was our own young people dying.
prospects of getting drafted and sent into that meat grinder was enough to make many folks want some mental escape.
And in stepped Timothy Leary.
I just said no. No coke, no LSD, no pills of any kind.
Now those LSD takers are in their 70's. Wonder if they had any long term effects.
the occasional pink elephant?

that just didn't seem like good entertainment to me.

64F and overcast @ 13:00, that beats the predicted high of 63F. 70% chance of light rain @ 13:00 - which would be good, saves me from having to water the grass seed.

Some leaves have come down but most of them still on the trees ... probably because no frost or freeze yet. Getting close to peak color I think.

Likely finish up trimming off and moving the new strawberry plants to the shelves.

Then work on trimming back the ones planted in the ground so I can melt more holes for planting.

Amazon delivery due today: 20 pak of suet and a new Jaco digital air pressure gauge. New Square D 50/70 pump pressure switch not due until tomorrow.

Forgot to order a new anode for the water heater from Amazon, need to get one of those segmented ones as the heater is too tall to install a solid one without completely disconnecting the heater and tipping it over. Menard did not have segmented magnesium ones, just aluminum ... so will order from Amazon for another $10 more.

Hope everyone has a decent Thursday ... (y)

RS, despite yanking out all my strawberries, three plants survived and are growing like mad.

(y)

You are going to have quite the crop next year with all those plants.

I sure hope so.

Will you have to cover them or will fencing keep critters out? Lots of critters like strawberries....

The electric fencing I'm going to put up will hopefully keep the deer from mowing them down.

I expect the chipmunks, squirrels, and groundhogs will likely go after the berries once they ripen.

Plan is to put up 1/2" poultry netting 2' tall on the inside of the fence posts and then the electric wires on the outside of the posts. Probably space the wires every 3" or 4" for the bottom 2' and then go with wider spacing above that for the deer.

Hopefully that will keep the majority of pests out, only thing it wouldn't handle is the birds. May do some kind of cover for those. Have to see.

Good luck with the shocks ... (y)
