49 outside this AM. Expecting low 70's today.
Running behind on lots of projects and whatnot.
On Walnuts, there is English and Black. What you see in the store is mostly English. Easier to crack. But, not as healthy as Black. We have Black Walnuts on the property. Just yesterday I gave away three grocery bags full of them, with husks, to a friend. That's from one tree, and it still has about 1/2 way more to drop. They pose a danger walking under them, rolling your footing, getting bopped in the head. Not kidding. The squirrels move them all over the place, another fun fact. They end up in the weirdest places. Tube of satellite dish, engine compartments, barn and outbuilding walls, Milk House attic..... and yes, they are hard as all.
A nuance tree IMHO. Around the house anyway. The husks are messy to deal with too. And anything under the tree does not do too well. The decomposing husk is rather toxic to grasses.
On the lighter side, if you have a lot of time on your hands, they are pretty tasty. A good 2X6 with a nice hole it it and a hammer works well. Wear gloves and eye protection.
Time to tend to the animals and get the equipment ready for pasture and fence line maintenance.
Hope all have a great day. Be safe.
