I use Arbor day for my trees, limited selection but seem to be decent.
I have friends who use fastgrowingtrees with decent results.

Ken we have to be careful what we plant here. The deer are ravenous and devour all sorts of things and six or more live here full time along with the bear possum rabbits squirrels skunks (coyotes who are really not welcome). I planted a bunch of wildflowers a couple of years ago turned out nice

Buppies,
I also have a deer issues and they eat everything, including some poisonous to them plants.
They probably had a belly ache after that.
Last few years ate all my tulips and hosta .
And I have a 7 foot chickenwire fence, stapled to the ground due to deer, groundhogs, rabbits and raccoons.
I planted Ginko which the deer don;t seem to like.
A few almonds, which I had to cage and some evergreen trees. Since deer love arborvitae don't do those anymore.
They will even eat my holly bushes during the winter!

We don't have a bear population, though they cross the river every now and then and local wildlife mgmt bring them back to NJ :)

Coyotes are new here, but showing up everywhere. Skunks, while not plentiful are around.
Foxes have made a big come back. Had a kit born on the front of my property.

What else do you plant?

Always looking for advice on deer proof. As they even eat rose of sharon here, whereas they didn't when I was in NJ.

I will need some fast growers soon, thinking Silver Maple and maybe some more cedar or pine.
New neighbor next year and I want a nice looking and maintainable screen for us.

Hope all is well with the snow.

gingko trees can be absolutely beautiful with such a pretty different shaped leaf
but oh for a month or two when it drops its fruit, well when it rots it smells. Just not what you want to track into the house.

nice thing about the online tree site Don mentioned is they sell a one year no questions asked warranty for a low price, store credit but that's fine
local places only warranty what they plant, for big bucks.

Ken, you keep those deer down on your side of Bowman's Hill
after the snow I could see where they went to sleep in the front lawn, then meandered around, probably chomping on something as they headed into the back yard.
Tracks in snow tell an interesting story. Everything trampled down near bird feeder.

Wind howling now, snow died off to essentially nothing shortly after I posted earlier. Heard to see how we're going to get to what they were calling for unless something changes.

Banking done, paperwork sorting in progress.

On plants/seeds I have used both Holland Bulb Farms (out of WI) and Eden Brothers (out of NC) and have been largely happy with both for the most part.

Holland usually tends to be cheaper than Eden Brothers and they have a program that allows you to earn points on your orders that can be redeemed as a credit on orders. It's not insignificant.

I'd say quality has been decent on both, but I'll know more this coming spring summer.

A couple of others to check out that I get emails from but haven't actually bought anything from:

American Meadows out of Vermont - seems to be a little cheaper than Eden Brothers on wildflower seeds. Also like Eden Brothers, they offer larger quantities of seed. Have some good "How-To" videos and instructions.

Park Seed out of South Carolina - seems to be a focused on smaller quantities of seed, but they do offer bulbs, plants, and fruit.

Gurney's out of Ohio - seems like a smaller operation, not as cheap as some of the others above.

All of them offer various sales, come-on's, and promo's to get you to buy ... ;)

I got the plowing done and it was so nice out that I tried to move the Jeep and trailer. Nope, battery flat. Got back from town and took my tester to the battery, 3.45 volts. No wonder the lights on the dash wouldn't light up. Battery charger on it now. I'll go out in a couple of hours and check on the charge. Probably take the charger off it for the overnight and stick it back on in the morning. The trailer was frozen into the ice on the driveway, the Kioti took care of that. Lifted the trailer up until it broke free and then dragged the whole thing back 10' so I could get at the battery.
The only reason for moving the Jeep was so I could clear off the snow on that part of the driveway, it was only up to my knees.

Roy, when it comes to coffee, if it aint black then I am not drinking it. I use to get it with 1/2 a shot of cream and found that the coffee shops up here insisted on putting 2 or three shots in it. I didn't mind a little cream in my coffee not the other way around a little coffee in my cream. So now I insist on black and I will add whatever I want to it.
I have a half a 26er (what you would call a fifth) of Baileys and a half gallon of Kahlua in the fridge.

The DIL and her on again off again medically assisted suicide is off again. This makes the third time she has set it up and three times she cancelled it. I don't know how Doctors can do that. What happened to the hypocritic oath they took?

Before I went in the Navy, coffee was sweet and creamy...
But, aboard ship, fresh milk didn't last long...so, I drank coffee black and sweet. Not too long after, gave up the sugar too...
So, for the last 50 years...it's black for me

37F steady rain changing to snow around 8pm or so 10-14 inches by late Friday night, wouldn't hurt my feelings if rain continue next 24 hours.

8 hours at pt. job than finish getting ready for the nasty storm, yup it's a feet up night.

Enjoy your evening all.

/ Good morning!!!! #145,210
I would prefer to be on your side of this storm @rswyan. It is a mess here. We have ice everywhere. Not sure what is coming down now, some odd mix of ice, snow, and sorta liquid precipitation. But at least I can walk on it so far.

Again, I come back and a whole 'nuther round of drama. I got tangentially swept to the other thread...I agree with Don....cesspool.

We should be able to civilly talk about alligators, with personal experiences....and no drama.

Mostly, condolences and prayers for the family. Hope your sister gets well soon.

Too cold and bad road conditions to go into work today. 28F windy and wintry precipitation. Feeding the fireplace. It's hungry.

Got my freebie alligator testing devices yesterday.

Popgadget, great job on the welding table. That annular cutter magnetic drill is the shazbot nanu nanu.
I haven’t said much about latest skin cancer removal. It became infected had to go back and get three dissolvable stitches removed and now on high powered antibiotics the bathroom is new friend. Eating yogurt to replace good bacteria. Odd that it took a month for this to show up
Prayers my friend.

25 outside this AM. Heading to mid 40's.

The job - not working out too well. I am too old for training people on stuff they should know by now. If you know what I mean. Heck, been on it for not even two weeks and am ready to slide my chair over to the recliner full time. So bad the wife noted the attitude adjustment and took me out for a sit down dinner last night. I think we are at the point where our five year plan gets tore up and we start in a new direction. That includes possibly selling the farm and properties.

.......and I quit for today.

LOL.

Maybe I need an attitude adjustment. Is it 5 o'clock yet???

ROTFL.

Guess I will get the splitter out and chop some wood up.

Went back to part-time after yesterday. Big guy called, rearranged some things. We will see if that helps all of us out.
Hope you got things ironed out. You said it, "Times change".

So, more moderators needed?
Yes. and some reasonableness. remove the bad apples from the bushel.

Good morning! Happy ground hog day and six more weeks of winter! 51˚F partly cloudy light North wind the high will be 57˚F at 1pm then the cool down starts.
2" of snow and or ice is predicted for Thursday/Friday.
The news is again making it sound like a snow and ice armageddon. Schools and business are planning to shut down for Thursday and Friday and it is warned the roads will be like a bumper car ring without the bumpers. Grocery stores are flooded with people getting prepared. The governor has warned of possible electrical "Shedding", a new term meaning rolling blackouts. Our electrical line is underground so our immediate area will not be affected by downed limbs because of ice. Wind chill will be zero˚.
I made a trip to Mom's yesterday and got her ready. The HEB grocery stores parking lots in Taylor and Elgin were over filled. In Taylor all checkouts were open with lines into the aisles. Mom's county road was a muddy mess and I had to stop at the car wash close to Kyle and high-pressure the mud off the Ranger.

I'll head to the garden and get the beets, and move the outdoor citrus plants into the garage and then self PT this afternoon. I might go to the store later this afternoon to see if the shelves are empty.
Stopped at store at 7:50 AM yesterday. Had the place to myself along with the distributers.
That's the first I've heard of the insurance companies using an old roof as an excuse for declining coverage, Ted, but it makes perfect sense. Most roofing materials deteriorate with age. Then again, the roof here is concrete tile, and is fifteen years old, and now I wonder if that's yet another reason why I'm having so much trouble. Guess I should get out of here before the whole place comes tumbling down around my ears, huh?
I would believe that a tile roof has a 100 year life. Here in Texas (besides what Don wrote and scorpions), we have freedom. If you want to move a pile of dirt from one side of your property to the other....you can. Unless it might be the size of a lake.

Spent some time reading the 2 referenced threads. WOW. While I’m in the No camp, his site- his rules, I do think Mod transparency should be a part of that and Mod action without at least a simple explanation doesn’t help. I guess above is a violation. Oh well.
Good post.

I took my kids to Whataburger and had a great breakfast with them this morning. (they were let out of school and the icing hadn't started).

What we need is a place to land together, if the worst happens.

Prayers for our team and our country.

Good morning! 27 with freezing rain. That may be the high for today.

Everything is coated in ice. I have salted the sidewalk twice already. Takes a lot of careful steps to get to the garage. Put some salt on the upper part of the driveway, but don’t expect it to do much. Try again later.

We are both staying home. Just not worth the risk.

Everyone stay safe out there!

My brothers work in Baltic was closed today.

Just .73” rain here so far. Forecast for tomorrow keeps changing, one had it getting below freezing overnight, now it says will stay above freezing.

I don't know who moderates this thread. Any moderators like to say Good Morning?

MikePA removed some posts on 12/28 from people who came into GM just to argue a certain unnameable subject, and Ron thanked him for it.

Rich,

What you're describing seems to be what's happening here right now.

Came into my office, and work computer says “upgrading, don’t turn off, 72%”

It’s been 72% ever since, and it’s quitting time. What to do.
I hate the spinning circle of deception. A good OS like linux will show the log so you know what’s going on.

for you guys with boats, there's a new tv king of the hill
somewhere between 400k barebones to $1M installed
sure has wow factor
1000 nits on a screen that big must use a lot of electricity

can be a lot of bugs out on the water at dusk
Might have to move your 200 footer away from your favorite island

this thing goes pretty fast and just keeping up is sometimes hard I think for all of us.
so wondering how they moderate, one person, a team? I'm all for it.

It likely gets initially moderated by whoever first gets a report of something for them to have a look at. That probably depends on who is online and logged in at any given point in time.

I'm fairly sure the mods don't go looking for stuff to moderate all on their own ... ;)

Whether there are multiple parties involved after that point, I have no idea.

BTW - it used to be that the moderators for any given forum were listed at the bottom of the page of the forum being displayed I believe. That went away with the last upgrade.

.

Lol already checked into it , I figured I could start up Vbulletin on AWS, get a “GoodMorning” domain name, then saw Vbulletin wants $250 month as a starting point. So that ain’t happening.

20°F and snowing this morning, steadily dropping through the day into the teens overnight. It was down to 17° earlier, but warmed back up to 20° now. Snow has been falling (actually, blowing sideways) all day.

We've had an interesting time with this storm. Not the precipitation so much as the wind. Our power flickered quite a bit yesterday, then finally went out around 2:45pm. It was out until about 11:30-ish-pm when it came back on, only to go out again a little after 1:00am. It continued to come on for a few minutes and go back off again several times until sometime just after 5:00am when it came on and stayed on. Well, until about 12:30pm today, when it went off again. Came back on a little after 2:00pm, and has been on steady since then ... so far. Crazy. Reading the Facebook posts and constant updates from the electric company reveals just how crazy it's been for them. Multiple lines down all over the county (one on our road about 100ft from our driveway), wind causing "galloping" power lines that kept breaking, replaced cross supports and insulators were breaking within minutes of having just been replaced, ... the wind has not been our friend. We had about three inches of snow when I went out to feed the chickens this morning. Haven't been out since to see what's out there now.

This morning, I started thinking about RNG, and wondering why this only seems to be happening in our county. Are we getting some isolated storm that no one around us is getting? None of the adjacent counties are having these issues. The Quality Jerk in me has started pondering the potential root cause of all this. Is our county power co-op not adequately maintaining the equipment? It seems odd to me that this is only happening within the lines of Clinton County. Once we get through this mess, I will surely be asking these questions in a very public way.

It's also prompted The Wife and I to have the whole-house generator conversation again.

Condolences to you and your family for the loss of your BIL, Mostly_.
