Always looking to improve my tree felling skill set, Billy. What "non-approved methods" did you use?
The method I used won't improve your skillset, just the opposite.

The top (about 50 feet up) was caught in the "arms" of another bigger oak. I cut rounds off the standing bottom of my leaning tree, shortening it with a thud as it dropped 18 inches, which made the leaning angle less acute, one section at a time, until it was 90 degrees and much shorter, and it then fell backwards from its original lean.

Good evening all. 30F for the start, mostly clear sky, light breeze. Light wind today, sky mostly clear to partly cloudy, and high temp was 63F, DP 28F. No rain in 10 day 3-4 days of fire in insert:). Men's meeting to start day, then on roof to take Christmas light down. Did get nap in . Took wife to dinner in town, and noticed smoke but did not smell anything, too dry for haze.

I’ve done that.

good morning all.
up too early, David is just going to bed....good news on Sophie.

glad to report a mini heat wave arriving today, 27 going up to 47 today and above freezing for next two days.
Two things planned for today, a trip to church this afternoon to do a full service on an electric utility cart. We bought it used, didn't
have a manual, though I'm sure it's online. I don't think our caretaker has ever looked for front end zerks so I'm taking my grease gun with me.
Plus I'll clean and top off the batteries, and leave him an automatic battery filler which will motivate him more than his current turkey baster.

have 50 daffodil bulbs to plant, wanted to do that this morning but ground needs to thaw a little, which it will over next day. So more likely tomorrow.
Unlike RS who remembers his plant names perfectly, which he surely needs to keep his amazing hosta straight, I just buy/plant by color. And mostly whether they are deer proof.
Makita cordless drill and plant auger makes the job easy, but even a steak knife has problems cutting through a frozen steak.

amaryllis inside starting to bloom. One of my favorite house plants. Got them to grow outside in NC, barely, no way here. They'll go in the basement when done.

Good morning, low temp 4 and going to a high of 14°F. Wind E 7 mph. 30% chance of flurries.

This morning I need to go out and scrape the 2 or so inches off the driveway along with my two neighbours.
This afternoon will be a town run, then conserve energy.

Have a safe day all

Poured first cup of coffee. 31° with cloudy skies. Heading to 36° clouds and slight chance of snow. Snow is looking dirty. Needs to melt or get a fresh layer. It nice outside yesterday so I did a couple of small projects in barn. Grocery shopping this morning. Then some more puttering in shop.
Not sure what this bird is. Larger than a robin.

David, good news.

Mostly, burn pile is very near some nice maple trees. We may move it to same place as other burn piles.

Everyone stay healthy and safe.

Good Morning All.

40 degrees this morning high of 51. Snow storm news for those interested

Those east of say Charlottesville may have more sleet rain. Riptides still big snow better than a foot (beer time), wngsprd not looking promising, Toppop not too good if you like snow, SWVa maybe sleet, BEF not too good either if you like snow. This is what I call confusion time until the models get a good grip on what’s going on which they have not yet. Best guess I have right now

prayers for Kyle his moms and family, prayers for Eddie Walker and his wife, Sophie, Roy’s wife in recovery and all others

Don how about Snowblitz

29 going to 51.

Ron, I believe it's a European Starling...an unwelcome bird in most places due to its behavior regarding other birds.

Yesterday moved my firewood into place at the splitter with the tractor while the ground was frozen, and then roasted coffee. Decided to take my wife out to a late lunch and then grocery shopping and didn't get home until after dark, so no wood splitting. We went to 2 stores...prices were noticeably up and saw more bare shelves.

Electricity has been 100% restored in the big damge area, but the weather forecasters are warning about wet snow and ice and rain Sunday night after the Sunday snow.

I was admiring that bird's nice warm coat of feathers.
of course one man's invasive species is another guy's friendly visitor

look at the problem Florida has with those huge pythons. Not sure anyone wants them but birds?
They probably crowd out other birds in the constant battle for territory and food.

and all those starlings have a fun history, related to Shakespeare.

All the European Starlings in North America descended from 100 birds set loose in New York's Central Park in the early 1890s. The birds were intentionally released by a group who wanted America to have all the birds that Shakespeare ever mentioned. It took several tries, but eventually the population took off. Today, more than 200 million European Starlings range from Alaska to Mexico, and many people consider them pests.

Ron's version looks younger or smaller. This guy hasn't missed any meals. Though he probably can fluff up his feathers in a way
to stay warmer.

Drew, there were 2 Starlings at feeders at same time as the one I took picture of. When I tapped on window all 3 left. Have not seen them before or after.

27 outside this AM, heading to the high 40's. Should be a nice day to finish up the "yard" work.

Yesterday to my dismay I found our oldest fruit tree, an apple tree had basically split in two. So today the chain saw comes out. It has been here for quite some time. We imagined it to be at least 50 years old if not more. Over the years it was never managed but the spring flowers were lush and plenty. I knew it was on its last legs for the last few years, the end came, slowly.

A few more trips to the burn pile with the RTV were made, today, estimate is at least two more. After that, we should be ready for the next round.

All will be happy to know, the wife doubled up on the beer stock, she had an issue with the app. Not her choice, but hey, it works out!

Today, she will frequent the stores for pickup, we have been good about staying away from others, so curb side continues as needed. The timing looks to be good, with the approaching rain/sleet/snow/end of world weather event.

Hope all have a great day, be safe.

Nephew came down with Covid, his wife is an ER nurse. Daughter gave two weeks notice yesterday, she too is an ER nurse. Hoping this passes quickly and we can get back to a normal, new or whatever normal is.

We put a feeder on the back deck about a month ago...mostly chickadees, a few cardinals and (I think) blue jays. Stepdaughter is the bird expert of the family, not me
Boy, they sure go through the food!!
