Fooled around with the new shotgun yesterday trying to figure out why I could only get 6 shotshells in a 7 round magazine tube. It turns out that the spring in there is too long and it gets coil bound before the 7th round will fit. I was tempted to cut the spring, but instead I ordered an aftermarket one that is supposed to work and still provide reliable feeding. The guy that sold me the tube tried to blame defective ammunition, but the shells I have measure under the SAAMI specification. That's an American standard, now I wonder what spec the Italians use that made them think 7 @ 2 3/4" shells would fit with the spring they provide? Any idea, Eric?

With a magazine that takes 6 standard (2 3/4") cartridges, the shotgun would still be classed as holding 7 rounds because you can have another one loaded in the chamber.

The "one up the spout" factor is significant in Europe and may have caused a slight translation issue, for example in the UK unless you are prepared to jump through another level of paperwork and usage justification, most semi-auto shotguns are physically restricted to accept a maximum of 3 shells, which is 2 in the mag plus one in the chamber.

Maybe .. we should have put out a "bounty" on that oversized Pennsylvania Rat .. that predicted 6 more weeks of winter .. 2 weeks ago?

We've still got .. 4 weeks?

That explains a lot! Our Canadian Groundhogs all predicted an early Spring, LOL! (Cold in Texas, warm in Canada - who'd a thunk it!)

The propane exchange at Walmart is hard to beat. They don't care if your exchange tank is out of date. I paid $14.82 per bottle last week. Paid at cashier, walked outside, met associate at the bottle rack, swapped bottles, gone.

That's a good deal...I paid 15.46 yesterday to fill the bottle with 4.7 gal. They had just gone up from 2.99 the day before to 3.29/gal.

25F and cloudy, head to a high of around 31F. Got a light dusting of snow through the overnight, less than inch accumulation. Headed down to some pretty chilly single-digit lows for Friday and Saturday ... but then up to the low 40's for a high on Wednesday. Some snow in the 10 day forecast.

I had an observer patiently waiting when I went to refill the squirrel feeder yesterday:

The duck turned out decent, although honestly, I think I probably would have preferred Duck L'Orange ... but the recipe we used was determined by the ingredients we had on hand. We'll try that next time.

It was good ... accompanied by some Near East Long Grain and Wild Rice:

Still have enough to get another meal out of it I think.

After dinner, I went ahead and made another Texas Sheet Cake and had it out of the oven before The Woman headed off to bed. Not being able to resist the temptation, it was still on the cooling rack when she dipped into it ...

Can hear a pileated woodpecker drumming ... good to know they are still around and haven't been driven off by habitat loss from our local clear-cutter.

Will need to refill the squirrel feeder again today as it is almost drained. Not sure who is getting more out of it at this point - the squirrels or birds ...

Hope everyone has safe day.

Well since my first post this morning, we received about an inch of snow that has been topped by a continuous downpour of sleet. This will keep the depth of accumulation down. At least I hope we don’t get 10” of sleet everywhere . We have periodic avalanches coming off our roof as the granular material cannot stay on the pitch! Some of the piles under the eaves are more than 10” deep already.

26° and 6” of snow. Now sleet and freezing rain.

Good evening all. 17F for the start, overcast, light breeze. Light wind day, some peaks of sunshine, and high temp was 24F. Friday will be above freezing for first time in a long while. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of next week look near normal.Cleaned up ashes and stokes insert. Finished cleaning out fridge, set garage up as temp fridge, room in garage freezer for the frozen stuff.

MG,

I started on ours the other day ... still have more to do, probably also on the menu for today.

Was able to remove old defrost board, one lead looked funny, another lead looked fried. was able to order new board and get overnight service but no tracking yet.

Hope you get it quick - better prospects for that, with temps warming up some.

Water came back late morning, most air out of pipes by early afternoon so turned water heater back on. No power outages today, stepdaughter house was still doing rolling blackout:eek:.

Good news on your end at least, hopefully better for SD and others today ...

RS going stir crazy yet?

Not in the least.

RS you are making sound cold up there ;)

Actually, it wasn't all that bad out ... lack of wind and lots of sun made a huge difference. The Woman asked to feel my hands when I came in and couldn't believe how warm they were.

RS Glad snow blowing went well, that was one big duck!

Around 6 lbs ... so good-sized I guess ? :confused3:

Good luck on the 'frig repairs and stay warm and safe ...

16°F and light snow this morning, going up to 23° today. We got about a half inch of new snow yesterday, and another half inch over night.

Lots of traffic problems around the STL area this week. The people who aren't very good drivers on dry pavement seem disinclined to stay home during inclement weather. I saw a car sitting just off the road this morning at the intersection where our country roads meet up with the state highway. Looked like Bozo took the turn too fast, like he probably always does, and ended up about 10 yards into the lawn of the water company office building, still sitting in his car with the lights on when I drove past. I wasn't slipping at all driving through there. But then, I wasn't driving too fast either.

Wife has been having some issues with a tooth for about the last week. She went to the dentist yesterday and x-rays showed the bone was broken and the tooth was loose. The dentist pulled it, and the tooth - which was capped - was completely black underneath. She was not happy. The dentist stitched it closed, so she's doing soft foods for awhile. Still not sure what they're going to do about the bone issue. She got headbutted by a dog she was training back in October, and that's when she first started having issues with that tooth.

Nice-looking Mule, Ron. Congrats.

65°F and .31 inches rain. Likely rainy morning with this front
Got my internet reconfigured yesterday. Took sim out of Unite Explore I keep in truck and installed in the Mofi, Played with antenna alignment. Mobley as secondary with the Proxicast antenna. AT&T possibly tweaking their antenna as I’ve never seen such good speed tests. Will retest today and hope for similar results. The new Visible line will go in truck to replace Explorer. Should be a good move as it uses Verizon, different dead spots.

Had hoped to get the UniFi AP’s mounted, but that means getting on the roof.

Prayers for all
Be safe
Have a great day

That's how it is here in Illinois during hunting seasons. You cannot (legally) have a shotgun in the field with greater than 3-shot capacity. Larger capacity tubes or magazines have to have a stopper in them.

Good Morning, It's been years since I was here. My computer crashed last week so I'm putting all my favorites back in and checking passwords. Well have a nice day everybody and I will now try to check in more frequent. Ron

Took Mule to neighbor to show it to him. He says let's go out to the woods. Got about 20' into unplowed snow. Stuck. It did get itself out of the 18" deep snow. I think it needs snow tires. :confused2:

Thanks for all the picture comments. I cannot walk past kitchen window without checking to see if there is a picture taking opportunity.

Target rick environment ... luckily for us ... :D

That's a great pic of the cardinal ... can really see the subtle variations in color ...

Everyone stay healthy and safe.

Same back at you ...

Just checked our electric co-op's web site and they have zero outages this morning. They service just over 30,000 users.

We've not had any rolling blackouts since last evening.

Significant generation capacity has been brought on-line, state wide, over last 24 hours.

Welcome back Imported! and welcome to GM!

RS - I came from LI duck country and could cook duck 34 different ways by the time I was 15.

Did you do the boiling water on the duck to tighten the skin? (2 cups boiling water poured over duck, OR lobster pot to boil, cool 2 min and put duck in for one minute).

Miss LI Duck as most of that land now has McMansions.

Thanks for the insights, Eric. As you suggest, one round may have been lost in translation.:confused2: But as delivered, the magazine did hold 5 rounds as advertised, and the capacity problem only showed up with the aftermarket parts. Over here, the replacement magazine tubes are sold by their capacity, leaving little doubt as to how many 2 3/4" shells they're supposed to hold.

I've now found the drawings the CIP (Euro standards org) uses to regulate shot shells, and I think I see the problem. A couple of them, actually. Unlike SAAMI, CIP doesn't specify an overall length for the loaded shell, only the overall length for the ready-to-load shell. Makes sense from a safety standpoint, where you don't want the shell so long it opens into the restricted forward portion of the chamber. But the CIP drawing leaves it up to the manufacturer to determine the loaded length, and that will impact magazine capacity. SAAMI provides maximum loaded length dimensions, which apparently Benelli ignored when they picked the spring. That might not be the whole story, either, since the US military has adopted the M4 as their service shotgun, and I don't think they'd be very happy having to use special shells to get 7 rounds in the mag. Regardless, I'm hopeful that a replacement spring will resolve the problem.

So far, I've found no restrictions on magazine capacity for shotguns, as long as you're not going to use it on game. I've also leaned that you can not only have one "up the spout", but also one on the shell carrier. The net result is +2, using this "ghost loading" technique.

Curiously, though, there are federal regulations on what alterations can be made on imported shotguns. It involves lists of parts that if changed, need to be replaced with a certain number of other parts of domestic manufacture. Not sure what the real purpose is, but the regs have fostered a cottage industry that makes the replacement parts.:confused2:

We have a convenience store in Trenton that will swap tanks no questions asked. We also have a hardware store in Highland that will fill any tank, so long as it's functional.
