I couldn’t afford the first fill up on it. I do love Hatteras, but I believe I’d rather have a Buddy Davis, as if, but I can dream.

one of us has to hit the lottery so we can give rides...:dance1:

The wife and I are looking at homes in the US Virgin Islands. Been there a few times, any one else have experience with Island life other than David?

Rip, there are a couple of things you should know

A) Almost everything costs more.

B) Friends who live on a continent fall about laughing when you tell them how many miles you covered on a "long drive". :)

Good Morning. It’s 40 outside headed to 50 and rain for the next two days. I would much prefer that the rain went somewhere it was needed, we already have standing water in the low spots in the fields.

Yesterday I had a contractor replace a leaking skylight. Of course it was a size that wasn’t in production any more. The old one was an Anderson, new one is Velux that had to be custom made.
It was strange but nice to have someone else do it, as I have always been a staunch do it myself person. I built the house myself in its entirety including all the mechanicals and excavation.
The chosen contractor was someone that I knew well, he asked if he could use my shop to make the trim, and that I go away while he did the job. He did a great job, better than i could have done in my prime.

Today I’m helping to install two geothermal heat pumps with a friend. Should be interesting, the copper plumbing will be done with a ProPress rather than solder, and I have never seen one in use before. He swears by it. I’ll report back.

Paul glad trip went fine What carries that data that was on the screen?

The airplane has sensors for temperature, pressure altitude, airspeed, and heading. It also gets inputs from the GPS and ground based nav facilities for position, altitude, ground speed and ground track. All this information is fed into an air data computer that calculates the wind speed and direction, head or tail wind component, true airspeed, static air temp and other information.
Hopefully that was not too long winded of an explanation, I often suffer from the delusion that everyone shares my obsession with how things work.

For those putting up outside decorations, are they just for your own amusement or are they visible to passers by? The reason I ask is that I’m at the end of a winding lane that passes through hedge rows and not visible from the road. We decorate inside and a few things outside, but I feel like the Grinch hearing others talk about their decorations.

46 and mostly cloudy, going to 58.

Thanks for informing me of the meteor...I guess 56,000 mph is enough to give off a house shaking boom. For a while, I though maybe Popgadget was doing a flyover on his Florida trip. Did you ever say what kind of jet you were flying? Must be a fast one to make that kind of day trip.

Randy, I thought you might tell Ellen that the pile of Christmas decoration lights was your take on new modern art. But sounds like you went conventional...good move.

Rip, hope you go for it in the Virgin Islands...David need some competition for those beautiful tropical pix. Can I use you cab tractor while you're gone? I'll nail a few porch boards, and feed the horses.

Ted, what are you gonna do with that $850,000 money you're getting as an apology?

Thinking about deliveries, we are overall pleased with how the Fedex, UPS and USPS treats us. I will say that with 100% consistency, when I get something shipped by the USPS, their tracking will continue to say it will be delivered on a certain day, even after the mail has come, like yesterday...then their update changes to say "Arriving Late, in transit" with no expected date.

Still working with a strained back and irritated plantars, so decided to see how a short hike would feel...ended up going 5 miles and feeling pretty good, but tender this morning.

Pop, we decorate outside for both our enjoyment and for passersby, although they can't see much from the road.

IF I was to put up Christmas Hydro gobblers (lights), they would go up in the summer and stay up year round. Test the strings while the weather is still warmish and replace as necessary. Just don't energize them until near Christmas.

Good Morning!!!! 53F @ 4:30AM. Sunny. High 66F. Winds light and variable.
Still no rain in the 10-day, I'd be happy to take some off your hands if we can figger a way to get it moving west, Paul. Yesterday morning in the wee hours another brush fire broke out only a few miles from here, but fortunately someone reported it quickly and it only burned an acre and a half. Very curious how it got started, but my guess is a homeless person's warming fire got away from them. Just goes to show how dry everything is still. Less than half the normal amount of rain has fallen in October and November, and in my gauge I haven't seen anything measurable since June. I love learning how things work, so I guess I share your delusion. Does that make it any less delusional for ya? I'm on a flag lot, and the house is not visible from my access road. People can see it from across the canyon, but I'd just as soon not advertise its location with a bunch of Christmas lights.

Nice sunset, Ron. I think it's a sign of the times that we all start worrying when we get a little sniffle, headache, or scratchy throat. And heaven forbid we have to sneeze in public!

At least the rain will soften up the ground some for digging those fence posts, Eric. Be an even bigger trick getting rain to the parched West Coast from England, though.

I mentioned yesterday that it hasn't been that long since we were basking in 100F+ temps here. And it won't be long before we'll be getting frost overnight and maybe even a tiny bit of snow. Neither are my favorite weather, though, but one does make me appreciate the other more. As nice as the weather is in spring and fall, it wouldn't be appreciated as much without the extremes of the two other seasons to keep things in perspective.

New restrictions were announced here yesterday, Drew, based on the availability of critical condition beds in the hospitals. Unfortunately for us, we're lumped in with the major metro area of Sacramento, so we suffer from their excesses. That has our state legislators dander up, but nothing will amount of it. From what I've seen over the past few weeks, we've come down slightly from our second infection rate peak, and it wasn't as high as the one in late August/early September.

Thanks for increasing my apple awareness quotient, folks. Kept an eye out for some of those names in the produce isle yesterday, but all I found were galas, jonathans, the usual red and yellow delicious, and my still favorite fuji. But I'll keep lookin'...

Would never guess there's a shipping container in there somewhere, David. Nice work! Can't wait to see what you'll come up with for the insides.

Out here the HDs will do inter store shipments for free, RS. If you can find someone behind the counter that knows how to do it...:irked:

With the generator, Drew, you want to avoid trying to start the engine when household loads are connected to it, as it puts more strain on the starter motor and battery. I don't like to open and close breakers when there's a load, either, since it's hard on the breakers. Sometimes you just can't avoid it, though.

Saw that UPS story on my Facebook feed. NewEgg was also on the list. And true to form, there was a status update yesterday from OnTrac letting me know that they're running late, too. That's the new oil pan for the van, so looks like no work on that anytime soon.

Speaking of UPS, I found the last two deliveries inside the lock box when I got home yesterday, with the hasp engaged and the lock locked. Dunno what happened, but I wish the USPS person would start doing it that way, too.

I did manage to track down a phone number for the guy that made the decoupler, and the leak is due to a damaged x-ring on the actuator shaft. He's sending some replacements and I sent him a deposit on a locker for the front differential. He has the parts on hand, but won't have a spot open until next year. That works fine for me since I want to camp in it over Superbowl weekend anyway.

I think (hope) everything's arrived to complete the wiring on the solar panel upgrade, so I'll focus on that today. 90ー elbow hose barbs were not to be found in town yesterday, though, so I'll have to get 'em from McMaster-Car next week, and that'll put the generator upgrade on pause for a while. The rear engine mount for the van showed up, too, so that's back on the front burner. Too many things going on at once, and I'm running out of bench space for them all. Be nice to finish some of them and reduce the size of the mess!

TGIF gang!:drink:

Good morning! Oh no, "They" said no freezing for 10 days and it's 29˚F and nothing is covered. Oh well sooner or latter I usually get caught and loose plants every winter, might as well be in early December.

Drove Mom around a bit yesterday to get her out of the house but too cold and windy for her to get out of the truck.

I need to hang the Christmas lights sometime but my front yard tree that I put them on has got too big. I was going to bring home a discarded cedar from the park to decorate in the front yard but at the time seemed like too much trouble. The streets get pretty deserted after dark in the neighborhood but we usually have a neighborhood walk about and then two homes are open for cookies and drinks - but not this year. Waiting to see if there will be a spike in the covid cases - we are hovering around 200-300 new cases a day county wide, so far no change from last week. The average during the Summer was about 20 new cases a week. We need a few 100˚ days again. We have been having the mandatory face-mask for over a hundred days - just does not seem to make a difference but it makes every one feel better like they are doing something.

Yep, Don, 29 degrees for the low here this morning, too. But going for a sunny 57.

Good morning all, 39 going up to 48 and storm is coming.
Got the xmas lights up finally. A bit of a pain as the ground slopes towards the end of the house, so getting the ladder evened out takes some work with a 20foot fiberglass sliding ladder.
We like Gala apples a lot.
Fedex usually leaves packages wherever they feel like, by garbage cans, in the drainage ditch, side of road, between mailboxes. All of these locations are 600 feet from house and every now and then a pkg goes missing. I have complained, then they stop towards the house a few times, and then go back to random drop offs.

DFTodd - congrats on the Neice getting married
RS- tour de HomeDepot ?
Sodamo - you do good work, looks great so far, can't wait to see what you do with inside
Alien - no AC in car. Maybe get a 12v fan to get a bit of relief?
Popg - only a few people can see our front decorations as only one neighbor on our private road. The back deck lights are visible to the main road so you can see some of them as you drive by. So mainly for us and the neighbor-they have 2 small kids.

Stay safe and be well

When it comes to apples, before my DIL came over here from England it was Golden Delicious apples for me. Then she turned me onto Bramley apples, WOW! They are way better than goldens, but alas I cannot get them up here in Kanuckistan.

I can sympathize with those of you who have problems with deliveries. I've just never had that problem. When we lived 20 miles from town, I went into the Post Office to do a change of address card and the lady (turned out to be the postmaster, or I guess you'd say postmistress) asked if I'd like to meet my carrier (turned out to be her husband) and he asked what I'd want him to do if he had something too big to fit into the mail box; leave it on the porch by the door, put it inside thee shop building, take it back to the office, etc. Never a problem.

Now that we live in town, our front door is recessed and there's big tree out front, so anything left around the front door is well protected from the weather. Of course, no one even rings the doorbell; FedEx, UPS, USPS, etc. they just drop it on the porch and almost run back to their vehicles.

Just poured first cup of coffee. 36° with partly cloudy skies this morning. Heading to 42° with cloudy skies. I have been cleaning up the book collection that my wife had around the house. So many sewing, crochet, gardening, cooking and reading books that I have no interest in. So far I have been lucky to find someone to take them. But the last batch may have to go into trash. No one has offered to take them. That's OK. It's good to see all the others went to someone. Back at cleaning out the last book shelf. After grocery shopping.
Sunset had lots of color in it yesterday evening.

Drew, every time I get some kind of sniffle, headache, upset stomach or other kind of symptom. I start worrying. Yesterday it was a headache. When I did dishes at lunch time. I realized there was no coffee cup to wash. Checked thermo coffee pot. It still had coffee in it. Drank a cup of coffee. Felt much better.

Riptides, someplace warm would be great. Never went to the Caribbean.

David, place looks great. I see you got down spouts fixed.

Alien, wish I could share some of the cool air I have up here.

Randy, I have a 2 remotes on almost every light in my house. Christmas tree is on a timer.

RS, take a break and watch the wildlife more.

Everyone be safe and healthy.

Good Morning All.

I have remotes on all my lamps, but none of the fixtures, and the outdoor decorations. The ceiling fans are remote, but I long ago misplaced the clickers.

Good morning to all! Low of 15, currently 28 at 8:00 am. Should warm up today into the low 40s, the weekend up to 50. No precep possible until late next week.... the area still in "exceptional" level of drought.

We put up Christmas lights outside for the enjoyment of both ourselves and others. The house is on top of a hill and the lights can be seen from a few spots on the major road up to around 4 miles away. Quite a few kids in the adjoining small subdivision, so for their enjoyment also. Way back when I was a kid, my Grandparents had a small corner mom & pop butcher shop. I used to help my Dad decorate the big store windows for all the holidays. I really enjoyed spending that time with him. Putting up lights has just become a "tradition"..... There is also another major underlying reason, but in today's "politically correct" world, I will not delve into...

Today will definitely have some shop time in order. Yesterday's intended time out there did not happen. Partly due to the long term family issue that I mentioned back in early November... it reared its head again.... so far this morning, all is quiet and in order.....

I want to run into town to HF and get a few more clamps, a set of router bits (mine are now probably 35 years old and are showing their age), and probably a few things that I didn't know that I needed!
I didn't want to wait until tomorrow or Sunday, it will probably be too crowded.....

RIP, good luck on your VI house search... that would be nice for sure!

Don, maybe no damage in the garden from the cold? If it didn't stay that cold for too long, maybe not....

UPS and FedEx have been coming here late also... another delivery at close to 9 last night.... driver said he has been out to past 10 every night this week. At least no packages have been left out at the road....

Everyone have a great day!

Ours are visible to the road, and to air traffic, I’m a few hundred yards from the N/S runway. Actually, I’d put them up if only we could see them, I just like to do it. I don’t do nearly as much as I use to.

l

I bought a pair of extension ladder leg levelers a number of years ago for my sloping ground and I'd swear by them. I bolted them on an aluminum 20 ft extension ladder and found them very easy to use. I don't remember the brand, but got them at either HD or Lowes. I'll go look at them and see if the name is stamped on them. I have a longer fiberglas ladder and need to get a set for it.

29° and cloudy with some light frost this morning, going up to 52° today.

Looking forward to a three day weekend. Using the last of my PTO days for the year, so this is the only 5-day week for me this month.

It's been almost three weeks now since our chickens have laid any eggs. Starting to get a little concerned.

Lou, our regular delivery guys/gal are pretty good here, too. When my Wife's grandmother was still here, the postal carrier would deliver her mail to the door on slippery days, so she wouldn't have to walk down to the road and back. Our regular UPS and FedEx drivers know where to leave stuff, too, to keep it out of any potential rain. The people they have working the holidays this year, though, especially Amazon, are just leaving stuff everywhere.

Chris, we are starting to see a landslide of closings around here. I've seen five or six restaurants announce this week that they are permanently closing. I honestly don't know how any of them are staying in business. The restaurant and bar business is tough enough in good times.

Makes you wonder how they all survived back in the "good old days" before air conditioning, huh Doug. We typically get some 100+° days here in July and August, and we just stay inside on those days. Hope your heat wave doesn't last too long.

Off to Hilo town, weekly shopping and errands.

45 and partly cloudy but a good amount of sun @ 13:00, headed up to a high of 46F. Got some good melting going on but a lot of the ground is still snow covered. Headed back into the freezer starting tomorrow.

Hopper feeder now empty, need to refill.

No notification yet from The Depot that new crapper is in.

HF "3 Days Only - 25% Off !" coupon is now active ...

Rewatched Landberg Tile's YouTube reviews of that saw and a couple others. Also a review of the QEP manual tile cutter I was thinking of buying. Seems like the manual mostly work ok, but some clean up might be needed and occasional chipping is possible. Tile saw might be a better way to go all things considered.

Poking around on the 'net I noticed that HD apparently had a Black Friday deal on the RIGID 7" saw that I missed ... bummer ... :(

They have started sending me emails on tile tools though so ... :confused3:

Only major thing on agenda for today is to pump up tires on two wheeler and get tile unloaded from van and brought inside. Might move old stove out as well ... if I can round up the upstairs cats and lock them away to prevent from escaping.

Hope everyone has an enjoyable, productive, and safe day ...
