RetiredGuy, my experience with SS just North of Philadelphia PA was very good. Lines weren't too bad, they explained how I would get my late wife's disability payment, which was actually to my benefit because while I was pretty well maxxed, I retired at 62; full disability gives you age 66 benefit levels, so hers was higher. But if you have a disagreement with them, yes, you very likely need a specialty lawyer unless you have legal training.

Most of us are a little older. At our age all kinds of challenging stuff happens. We report a lot of it here because I suppose it provides some catharsis at times. A friendly ear. Sorry it didn't work well for you. No one here was trying to diminish your concerns, there is just so much stuff flying by here and yes, my boat stuff isn't a core topic at all. But if you bother to look back through my, what, 6000 posts now, you will find a whole lot of tractor pictures. And concerns about a lot of people's conditions. As they had concerns for me and my late wife as she basically died online here. Very caring people RetiredGuy. But none of us can expect everything we write to get responded to, it doesn't work that way. Roy pegged it, don't sulk, come back. We understand.

Happy birthday David. you old geezer...

Another five year old said yes to the xmas party, well, his mother of course said yes, so that means two five year olds, two 8's and one 11. And possibly a 3 year old and another whose age I forgot. The dockmaster's kids. The same dockmaster who will be washing my boat regularly in his spare time. Just one little Christmas hand putting cookies in the other...;) There are several new Disney movies coming out the week before the party so I preordered them on Amazon. I have backup if they don't show up.

Just trying to figure out how to get the tractor pic and not take too much time away from my guests. And lots of lit candles which with all those kids just makes my fireman antenna quiver in overtime. But the candles stay lit...placed safely except for direct hits. And full drip control in effect. I have to assume any candle will fall over and then what. This is the stuff a retired insurance man worries about...

This is the also the first time in about five years life has allowed me to throw a party and I'm just having a ball with it.
Sure hope David/Mossflower can say the same. Now where is that guy we saw go from very unhappy to very happy which was utterly wonderful to see?

btw RS, if one of has to go, I'll gladly volunteer. You have talent...:D

Complaining about lack of attention
Amazing...members here create all kinds of hype regarding a stupid boat and an aquarium yet when I ask for opinions about my spouses SSDI being cut off NOBODY CARES that our income is being cut in half and all anyone can say is "Consult a lawyer"....I think I am done with TBN....

Complaining about cars
Just read the latest issue of Car and Driver, they did a report on the 2016 Chevy Malibu Premier...get this: 250 hp 2 liter four cylinder turbo charged and intercooled, they said it will do a standing quarter mile in 14.7 seconds and has a top speed of 156 mph (drag limited) but only delivers 20 mpg overall.

Well...my 2004 Saturn L-300 has only 180 hp from a 3.0 liter V6 yet it will do a standing quarter mile in 14.9 seconds, and deliver 23 mpg in mainly city driving. I have never checked the top speed for obvious reasons.

What is the purpose of building a 250 horsepower car that will go 156 mph yet only gets 20 mpg overall? Simply inane...

BTW, the Malibu C&D tested weighed 3307 pounds...my Saturn with a full tank of fuel weighs 3357 pounds

Complaining about restaurant manners of friends

Spouse and I have been talking about this (not arguing) since Saturday pm. We met three other couples at a mid-priced seafood restaurant at 5 pm, we had a reservation and were seated promptly. We had finished our meal at about 6:45 pm (about $25-30 a plate with tax and tip) and bid the other three couples farewell, they wanted us to stay and chat but we declined. Upon exiting, we observed about 15 other patrons waiting to be seated. My wife got a phone call at about 7:30 pm and from what the caller said the other three couples were still seated at the table (!!!)

I am glad we left when we did...according to my beliefs, loitering at the table after finishing your meal and paying your check at a busy restaurant when patrons are waiting for seating is quite rude. Knowing the other couples as I do, they are cheapskates when it comes to tipping and I doubt if they gave our server anything more than 10% although she delivered exemplary service. My feeings are:

If you are finished with your meal and the check has been paid, you do not loiter for chit-chat, and if you do you want to chat go sit in the bar area if there is one and order something to provide revenue for the establishment. YOU DO NOT LOITER AT THE TABLE and deprive the business and server of income and tips, and most of all: During a busy evening, you do not keep other patrons waiting for seating.

Comments are quite welcome, thank you.

Seeming to complain about having to move

Age 65 here, recently retired and just began collecting Social Security. First wife passed away two years ago and I am recently remarried, have no kids and the new spouse has 3, and none of the kids have the slightest interest in taking over our homestead when we move in the not so distant future. I have lived on a fair sized property since 1987 and have put hundreds of thousands of hours of sweat equity into it and probably over a half million bucks into paying for and upgrading and maintaining the place. Yet despite all that, we are planning to move closer to town and downsize our home. Not really sure if I will ever recoup all the labor and bucks I put into this place, but...I guess I should have thought of that a long time ago.

Being a newbie here, I am wondering if any others are in the same boat...how are you feeling about being in the situation I am describing? I guess the good news is: They just opened a retirement community about 4 miles distant from us. We drive by it a few times a week...and darn...it is getting difficult to think we may be relocating there down the road. (pun intended here).

Complaining about store sales
Just an observation here: If retailers make such a huge profit on sales today, why don't they offer comparable deals as are advertised today at least one day a month year around and increase profits? It irks me no end places offer super deals one day a year like an HDTV for $299 and then limit the quantity available.

And no, we did not go out shopping either yesterday or today.

Complaining about Homestead tax credits
During four decades of life here in Mid-Michigan I paid property taxes which were in a large part taxes to support the local schools although I never had any kids in the local school system. For the most part I did not begrudge paying the taxes because I have always felt education was an important part of success in life. And for many of my years prior to retirement I was constantly assured that once I did retire, I would be able to claim my local property taxes (as of now, 4 grand a year) as a deduction on my state income taxes. Well...guess what? I was able to claim the property tax credit for ONE YEAR...One tax year...because when I began collecting Social Security (which I also had to pay taxes on) my household income went up to the point where I could no longer claim a property tax credit. What a farce. Pretty much what I have expected all along.

Any opinions?

Seeming to complain about engines & car builders
Seems like the engines in new vehicles constantly get smaller to increase mpg and I wonder how downsizing will affect service life. I began pulling travel and boat trailers back in the early 80's and the understanding then was that a small engine straining to pull a load would consume about the same amount of fuel as a larger engine that could comfortably handle the same load, and the bigger engine would have a longer service life. My last Ford F-150 pickup had the 5.0 V8 and I used it to pull a 7000 pound travel trailer...it did the job okay but had to work hard at times. Today's F-150 is available with an engine as small as the 2.7 Ecoboost and they are rated to tow more than the 7000 pounds my truck used an engine almost 2X the size to pull.

I would have reservations about using such a small engine for 7000 pound towing because I would wonder about the service life. Thank you for any input on the subject.

Hopefully not...recently retired and thinking about downsizing my place as it is getting to be too much upkeep for my aging body. look for my first "real" post in Rural Living.

Not much tractor talk, lot's of complaining. And this is a Good morning!!!! thread.

It's too bad that Retiredguy2's new wife hit a roadblock with SS, but stuff happens.

If I knew anything about ss and disability would comment however I don't so no comment from me. The people on this site are extremely good people who can help out with lots of problems but most are upbeat and not negative minded at all. When my two dogs died these people were there, when looking at implements they were there. Life is what you make of it good or bad it's up to you

Amazing...members here create all kinds of hype regarding a stupid boat and an aquarium . . . .

Those subjects are only a few hundred post long. Now If you want to see something really amazing go to this thread to see how a few pallets in a field generated over 2400 post. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/rural-living/299453-pallets-fields.html?highlight=pallet

To get the most exposure for a particular problem it's best to start a new thread with a title that will get the attention of the people that can help. Also, be very detailed and ask one very specific question. If you can't find the answer here then you might want to go to a site that is especially oriented to your particular question.

Sorry I can't help, I'm not close to 65 or know what SSDI stands for.
