Thanks for all the birthday wishes guys. I had a good day. Took a long walk in the river swamp and came back through my Longleaf pines. I'm expecting the pinestraw crew to show up any day now, so this view will look different then.

Do you get paid for the harvested pine straw? If so, well done!

The day I bought the Fiskar axe & hatchet, I also bought a Dirty hands log splitter (and I'm gonna need it when I get to the really big stuff).

So I'm in the same boat also.
David

No, your in a much better boat: Yours has a Fiskar axe!

But as much as you like your axe, I think you'll like your Dirty Hands a lot more before you get through the first cord of wood!

Never unloaded or opened the Generac, and Costco has good return policy, so will just swing my and take it back tomorrow.

... Hopefully no outages this weekend with the snow, although the latest weatherbug doesn't seem to indicate as much as they had earlier. Everyone else seems to think it is coming.

Costco's return policy is 90 days if I remember correctly. If I was worried about not having a generator if a bad storm hit, I'd be tempted to wait until after that storm to return that Generac. Even if it did get used, if you don't like it you can still return it for a refund.

Was 13.1F and pretty sunny @ 13:00 when I started to write this post ... overnight low was 6.1F ... got a little snow here, but really not that much compared to the guys up in the snowbelt ... can still see the tops of the grass peeking out here and there above what snow there is ...

Ammonia is @ between 0.25 and 0.0 ppm in the 55g, Nitrite looks to be between 2 and 5 ppm. Drained 5g out and did a partial water change, cranked the heater t'stat up to 85 for the nitrobacters, now that the nitrosomonas seem to have gotten a good hold. Had my hand down in the tank when I was adjusting the t'stat and noticed that I brushed off some "biofilm" (aka slime) so things are starting to look good. Tank has a nice earthy smell to it.

Started making fish food yesterday ... took a bunch of old(er) broccoli that The Woman said was starting to go south and trimmed out the spots which were obviously bad, then did the same thing for some sugar peas in similar condition. Then boiled them together. Had Cupcake stop by the store and pick up some carrots , sweet potatoes, and a package of chopped spinach. Cut those up and boiled them tonight.

Gonna make two varieties - one strictly vegetarian, the other one omnivore. Will add about a half pound of medium shrimp to the latter. Plan using The Woman's pans for tortes which are basically like cupcakes tins only smaller. Will try making 1/2" to 1" thick wafers by dehydrating them in the oven. If that doesn't fly, then I may just use the torte tins to make frozen wafers.

Why go to all the trouble ?

The other day when I was @ PetSmart I picked up some Omega One freeze-dried Tubifex worms for the African Spotted Leaf Fishes and I noticed that they provided the price for various fish foods by the unit of measure ... mostly by the ounce. Price on one item - don't recall which one - was in price per pound ... and was pretty much in line with most of the others, considering that there are 16 ounces in a pound. The price was over $225.00 per pound ...

And folks think steak and lobster are expensive ...

The leaf fishes are loving the Tubifex worms BTW ... they seemed to acclimate pretty quickly and were eating within 6 hours of being introduced in the tank. At this point they're starting to look pretty plump.

Very graceful fish with a pretty color pattern ... they just seem to glide and float around. The smaller one is maybe 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" long with a darker coloration. The larger one is mebbe 1 3/4" to 2" long and is considerably lighter. Dunno, could be a male vs. female thing.

The smaller one is constantly patrolling all over the 10g tank, the larger one is much more shy - usually hovering under a leaf of the Annubias plant or hiding in the cave, only coming out when it smells or tastes food in the water. They are definitely predators ... with very large mouths. They seem to be constantly eyeing up the rest of the fish in the tank as to which ones might fit in those mouths. The larger one has already gone after one of the Kuhli Loaches ... which is probably at least 1/2" longer than it is.

Not my tank, but here's what they look like:

11 going to 32, and some snow this afternoon. Friday/Saturday forecasts are interesting - the 3 local news shows this morning had it from 12 to 24 inches of snow. Wunderground has it 20 - 24+. We'll rely on you, Buppies, for the best forecast.

Got one oak cut, split and stacked yesterday. But the SeaFoam let me down. Maybe I used too much. Took 150+ pulls on the starter rope to get the splitter going...and I just used it and ran it dry a few days ago. It was in the low 20s when I tried starting it, so maybe some frozen moisture. I'm not liking this B&S engine at all...although I love the splitter. At least my 20+ year old Stihl saw starts when I ask it too.

Larro, Sounds like you had a nice birthday yesterday...lots of good outdoors time.

Drew, I know you are counting down the days when that nice recliner arrives.

RS - $225 per pound??? I need to start raising/growing whatever that fish food is - sounds profitable.

19 going to 39 today, a tiny warming trend...as the moisture starts to come in, snow to the West of me, nothing here until the end of the week and now they are calling it ice pellets. But a lot of moisture in the long range forecast so that sounds like snowy winter up North.

I may go out and roll some more ruts this afternoon when it warms up; actually might try some muddier spots while it's still frozen. Stone and sand come tomorrow and
I had pooled water still on the ground yesterday. I figure if the first load gets in there, I can spread the sand around and get the truck out of there to get the second load while I fix the mess from the first load. The joys of mud...and after these two loads, the mud should be well under control. And no more trucks.

I received from a friend of a friend, who had a brother who worked in a radio station, the entire digital dump of the radio station's files, 99,611 songs. Basically every song except classical since 1960. Now I'm going to assume there are a fair number of patent laws that cover this little indiscretion. But boy am I going to have fun now in the truck. I bought a little HP 1TB Passport drive, my friend loaded all the songs on it, and I can just plug it into the USB of the truck.

So I'm likely breaking a few laws listening to the music. If I make copies on a memory stick for a friend (16gig out of 363gig), am I going to spend twice as much time in Leavenworth?
Coming from a family of lawyers I don't like breaking the law, but this isn't causing me a huge loss of sleep. I guess if I had a close friend who was an entertainer with selling albums (talk about unlikely...) I would feel a little guilty.
And wouldn't you know that the Eagles/Glenn Frey came on as next in the list yesterday...

So now I'm in one of those "if you find a hundred dollar bill on the street" what to do with it? It's not mine...

14F clear sky mid 20's for high.
Gusty winds die down little snow drifts here and there.

Enjoy the day all.

26 here right now, going up to 56 they say. By 10 this morning they are releasing the freeze watch for a couple of days.

Sorry Drew, Yeah it is defiantly mine. Actually found it in a puddle, carried it around for a couple of days thinking it was fake, took it to the bank and they said it was real, I took my wife out for a nice dinner. Truely found money!

And if I remember correctly, having a copy is not illegal, making the copy is. I studied up on copyright laws when I was shooting weddings and models. Glad to be out of that business.

Thanks Kev. I often wonder the same thing when I see all the copies on YouTube. They aren't HD, clearly from "somewhere else" and by showing the picture, is that
violating someone's rights? Likely it is, what a fuzzy area when dealing with digital media. Seems on the surface to be a victimless crime, but maybe it's not.
Funny, at one time, I bought most of the albums I'm copying, all 50's to 80's stuff, so I guess I paid my dues at one point in the past.

23 this morning and headed to 32 today. Had about 3-4" of snow over night.

Plans for the day are plow snow. Then work in the chicken coops. First I have some work to do on the new tractor. The PTO guard is so tight around the PTO shaft that the pump to the cruster won't fit. So that has to come off today.

RS. Nice fish.

Drew. To smooth ruts I use a grader blade. Using it backwards will knock the dirt back into the tire tracks. Especially if angled the right way. 2-3 passes vs how many with a roller. And after a winter of feeding hay you should see the ruts here. Last year I was dragging the belly of the MF 255. That section is now covered in concrete plant remnants. Still soft but hope by spring the ruts won't be very deep.
