Good morning!!!!

   / Good morning!!!! #3,541
Last night in the storm or something a critter attacked our pen full of young birds and managed to get ahold of my daughter's beloved duckling... it damaged her bill and ate the end of her right wing off. I am sitting at a vet 40 miles from home hoping they won't put her down... my daughters are frantic...

Might sound silly, but if you pray, pray for this little duckling (her name is Cirrus) and for my daughters...

David

Oh, I am so sorry David...you certainly have problem after problem these days...praying the vets can work their miracles...

David,

You would be surprised what critters can overcome, children too. If the vet takes the wing, she will be fine. If the bill damage is not to bad and she is young she will learn to use it to eat. She may end up as an ugly duckling, but your daughters will love her more for it.

Hope all the damage is superficial and the vet will do their best.

LtF :)

LtF,

Thank you for the encouragement, and of course I ageee 100%.

This afternoon Syrrus (I spelled it wrong the first time) will have the rest of her wing amputated to effectively the elbow. Her bill is very weakened, but should heal, and there is nothing preventing her from eating at this point.

The vet was delightful and she was only about 30 miles away, and the second vet. First was cat/dog only.

My oldest daughter wants to be a vet also, large anumals (horses) and farm animals like Ducks...

Thanks for all your support... The last 30 days has been really stinky...

Be well,
David

Thomas,

When you wife says you need to sell it, PM me and we will chat...

When I "retire" I want to start a biz building custom bikes, but ridable ones, Not OCC or West Coast junk...

As long as I can stand on 2 legs, I will ride on 2 wheels, I plan to avoid the trike forever... That is my plan at least.

I thought they were stupid too, until I rode it, don't hate it until you ride it, makes you sound like I did, uninformed! LOL Honestly, I'd never spend $15K for one, but if I could rent one for a weekend, I would, in a second. I rode bikes for decades, as my sole transportation for long stretches, and I thought they were silly, turns out I can sometimes almost be wrong. As for the rodeo, it mostly exists in the fertile minds of the creative writer/thinker, me! ;)

Syrrus (silly me for spelling it wrong according to my oldest daughter...) made it through surgery at 2:21 today. They had to amputate the stub of her wing all the way to the shoulder, as the raccoon seemed to have broken it and destroyed the elbow. Her bill also should heal, it is not stopping her from eating and drinking.

If a Bear had ripped my arm off at the elbow, I would have just died most likely. At a mere eight weeks old, she bathed her self in her water, stopped the bleeding, and patiently awaited rescue. Did you know Ducks routinely live for well over 25 years and often until 30?

I brought her home today at 6:30 and she is resting in a storage bin in a warm spot on the stairs to the attic. The first bin I tried was longer and lower and she promptly hopped right out and went to the top of the stairs to check out the baby Guinea keets... Scared me to death when I came back with fod and water and she was GONE!

So my wife heard something going on last night, and I hopped out of bed and opened a window, and all was silent so I went back to bed... Now I'm adding the 20 gauge shotgun to my bedside...

Thanks to all of you who prayed, thanks to all for the support this past month.

Be well,
David

PS the first picture is today, the second one is the day she came home, April 14th, (the other duckling died overnight that night.).

Dear lord, what a crazy day...

More coffee this morning. Another cool morning. 50 degrees with clouds. Heading to 60 with rain this afternoon. Going to work on cleaning up garden pond today.
Good Morning All.

65 heading to 85 and hould be a nice day without T-Storms.

Today is my baby Brother's 44th birthday... I intend to celebrate it by taking the Remington 1100 semi-auto 12 gauge and Marlin semi-auto .22 I inherited from him, and shooting them for the first time.

Both will find use in my war against foxes, raccoons, and other predatory varmints...

Please have a wonderful last day of May all-o-y'all!
Be well,
David

A pleasant 62 degrees right now and it's expected to climb to 81. Today the friends I hired will be back again and we will continue doing work around the place. The ride on mower wouldn't start and I ran and got a new battery from the shop a mile up the road that maintains my Suburban.

Yesterday we got three raised planter beds filled with perennial flowers, the back yard got mowed, the compost got turned, the huge bird bath that came with the place got it's leak sealed and more stuff went off to the dumpsters.

Today we'll continue planting - both more flowers and some small fruit trees. I hope we will also be able to pull most of the equipment out of the shed and get that building properly organized.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms tomorrow mean an inside day catching up on housework and paperwork - especially record keeping for all the foster dogs.

May your day be a productive one with a few laughs along the way.

Solly,

I just looked up Floyd, VA on Google Maps and it is a LOVELY area!

In amongst all of your foster dogs, please PM me if you have a Great Pyrnee or a farm dog type that I could adopt to protect my chickens and ducks etc.

Something that would keep the foxes and coyotes and raccoons off my property and away from my birds.

I prefer to rescue animals, they seem to appreciate it more.

Floyd is a long drive, but it looks like it would be a beautiful drive...

Be well sir,
David

Morning guys, a chilly 44 degrees here right now, the cool air feels good after that 98 degree heat a few days ago. David, thanks for sharing the good news about Syrrus...must be one tough and brave little duckling to deal with all that.

Going to run my errands today, heading to Wally World after I do early mowing. Enjoy your day all, and for those still on the treadmill, just remember:

"Nothing matters but the upcoming weekend"

Toppop, just gave the area forecast for me so... Cleaned harness last night, going driving after work. I wish I had before and after of how filthy/moldy the harness was when I dug it out, the owner doesn't take care of it. But her horse is kind and enjoys going out.

David, glad to see that your flock still has a duck :) I agree with you about foster dogs, but see if Solly will bird test them before you get them. My loving rescue has killed more poultry than I care to admit (ok, I think he is up to 4 roosters and 14 hens). We love him, but don't trust him at the farm any more. :D
