Taurus Introduces New 856 | Taurus USA
that grip looks comfortable Roy.
Do you carry a revolver vs an automatic for reliability? complexity and cost?
what was "special" about a .38 Special?
I'm glad you are carrying because you'll be the guy to save someone sometime. Maybe save a lot of people.

When I carry a gun on my hip (outside the waistband), it's a 9mm Ruger. If it's a pocket pistol, most often the little Taurus 85 I described in my previous post. In small pistol, I think revolvers are more reliable. The downside is less ammo capacity (5 rounds of .38 vs. 6-8 rounds of .380 or 9mm).
Now, if I get into a situation, I'm going to do my best to escape...I'm no hero.
However, if I can't get away...shoot until the assailant stops the attack. That's the point of carrying...stopping the attack. Not to kill or even wound...just ensure the bad guy stops.

Those grips are pretty comfortable. Unlike some other small revolvers, the Taurus grips cover the backstrap (part of the metal frame). Little lightweight guns tend to be snappy and an exposed backstrap can be a bit painful. The guys who carry a small lightweight .357 Magnum must be gluttons for punishment. I have a couple .357 Mag revolvers and occasionally pack one (on my hip) when I'm in the field. But these aren't small revolvers and all go >25 ounces unloaded. Enough weight to make them more comfortable to shoot

The number of school shootings this year is horrifying. I think the time has come to put metal detectors in all schools, though I suppose some of these guns
could get by them.

Even plastic guns use metallic cartridges and bullets that would be found by a metal detector. Inner city schools have been using metal detectors and clear plastic backpacks for years. I don't know how effective those tactics are, but they would have stopped the kid in the most recent California shooting.

California has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country, but still a sixteen year old boy found his way around them. And Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. It will very likely come out that somebody in that kid's family or circle of acquaintances knew he was having problems, and had access to firearms. But nobody did or said anything about it to stop him before it was too late. Local schools here have armed School Resource Officers on duty in the schools every day. Schools elsewhere are letting teachers with the inclination and proper training carry concealed firearms in class. There's a lot more that could be done to make a difference, but I'll stop there to avoid being censored.

Fishing up first cup of coffee. 15ー with clear skies this morning. Heading to 32ー with partly cloudy skies. Did almost nothing yesterday. Needed to figure out how to use up last of a Sams Club Rotisserie Chicken. Decided to make some Chicken Cacciatore in the InstaPot. Mmmm good. No pictures. Off to Port Huron today to visit my aunt in rehab.

Randy, nice MF.

PJ, like the guitar mounts.

Roy, I need to add a revolver to my collection. Taurus 856 looks like what I am looking for. Would like a review when you get yours.

Buckeye, nice look at younger years.

Drew, glad your trip went OK.

Eric, now I know where my Cranes went. They have been missing since Wednesday.

Good Morning All.

Good morning! Of course it would freeze again after "they" said we have seen the last of freezing temps for a few weeks and after I uncovered all my tender plants. Grrrr.
Heavy frost this morning 30˚F heading to the mid 60s clear skies.

Yesterday was a Texas picture perfect Fall day also - 60˚ no wind with clear bright skies. Spent all afternoon with our Trail blazing group on the Cowan creek bottom blazing the new trail. Made lots of wood piles to mulch.

Heading to the gardens and hoping the higher elevation was a few degrees warmer. Its a good day to move and set rocks and blocks.

Good morning. Few autumns have been as wet as this one, it finally eased yesterday with just one heavy shower in the night. All fields will be no go areas except on foot for a good few more days and a far too generous grandson has given me his cold accompanied by slightly achy limbs, so I don't feel like pushing tools around in a wheelbarrow. The positive side to this is that I can have a whole day welding without feeling too guilty at what else is not getting done outside.

PJ, your guitar looks great on the wall. Hadn't realised you were having to spend money on custom mounts - could have given you some baler twine to hang it (obviously marinated in a gateway for a while to transform bright orange into something better colour matching the neck )

Randy nice looking Massey

BEF, good to hear you are doing things you could only have dreamt of a couple of months ago, just don't go attempting your '86 balancing tricks for another week or two.

Rick, I'm intrigued, how did you get the drilling rig itself to the other side of the Bosporus bridge, partially sink it, turn it on it's side, borrow Ron's cranes for an air lift or what ?

Once the dual activity drilling derrick was removed, the drillship had sufficient draft to move under the Bosporus Bridge with a couple of meters to spare ... at low tide.

Thomas has a moose on the loose! Pictures please

Rick, remarkable feat of engineering. National Geographic's cover article a few month's ago is all about the Arctic melting,
exposing vast new fields of oil and gas, and the huge rush on to drill up there. Apparently Russia is sitting pretty here, and apparently part of the joking
about buying Greenland, because I think we have a second (third?) drilling rush coming on.
I'd rather have them drill for LNG than oil, but oil will be king for a long time. Until like coal, it's phased out.
I'm guessing most likely by electrification. But an awful lot of diesel trucks worldwide that need fuel.
Plus how about those cherry 56 Chevy's used as cabs in Havana, they aren't going to be traded in any time soon.

It is worth finding that article and reading it.

Good Morning! It's 35° and clear skies this morning. Forecast is 65° this afternoon.

We had our welcome dinner for out first TPWD Youth Hunt last evening. Three of us cooked hamburgers and hot dogs for our young hunters and their parents. We have 18 hunters and about a third are girls. They're all late middle school to early high school age. None have ever harvested a deer and a few have never hunted before. The TPWD reps gave hunting safety presentations and rules of "the hunt" were discussed. This is a "doe" only hunt as we're trying to get our local deer population back to a better balance. Today ... we'll be smoking several briskets for the dinner this evening.

If winds stay down, I'm planning on igniting another burn pile this morning. I have three left to burn.

Randy ... that's a great looking tractor that should serve you well. It's "red" enough that you'll never lose it.

BEF ... nice picture from way back.

PJS ... congratulations on your excellent guitar builds.

Drew ... welcome home!

Ron ... your cranes are down here. I heard several fly over in yesterday's fog.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Prayers to all.

The shootings in Santa Clarita added a "new twist" in that it all happened outside of the school, as students were coming to start their day. Metal detectors, inside school entry points, wouldn't have prevented this one.
