Good house water filter

Can anyone recommend a good water filter for the house.

My well water is clear, smells great 80% of the time, but then the smell of eggs happens and occassionally the toilet will be stained, but then it will clear up. I figured a whole house water filter should do the trick.... don't y'all think??

another thing to check for the occasional sulphur smell
the anode rod in your water heater here in ND we have some minerals in some well water that causes a reaction to the anode rod its there to sacrifice the mineral to help the tank last
we have had to cut a lot of them out here to get rid of the smell
you water heater wont last long but we have not been able to find one that will work with the water we have

Just a few days ago I removed the anode rod from my water heater because it was causing a raw sewage smell in the hot water. That solved our problem. Previously I had installed a Cullogan water filter thinking it would take care of the problem. I still use the filter, and it probably does some good.

Thats what mine smells of, sewer water.. but only sometimes, and it is only the cold water. the hot water seems to take the odor away.

I was told that if it is the cold water it is sulfur that is causing the smell. The house we bought was outfitted with a water softening and odor removal system that uses Potassium permanganate to recharge the odor removal system. Recently it quit working properly and I had a service guy come out and service it. Boy you could tell the difference when it wasn't working. The service man also brought up the aeration system mentioned in the link above. He also said if you get the smell from hot water it is the hot water heater anode. If the smell is from cold water it is sulfur in the water. One way to identify sulfur is the black stain it will leave. He also said this condition can come and go, and get better or worse with time.

Thats how it is..

and it is crazy, the water can be perfect right out of the ground for a month and then BAM it is back.. i tried narrowing it down to dry times, after it rains, or anything and I couldn't identify it, it just happens.

Unfortunately the water softening systems probably are not very cheap. I don't know about the aeration system though, maybe it would be a little easier on the wallet. I hope you can find a good solution, that smell drives me nuts.

For our Rural water we use a whole house water filter then Sears WaterSoftner, then finally for drinking and ice we use a RO unit we picked up from Lowes.

We had a sears RO unit but the case started to crack after several years of use, I like the new RO unit because the tank is mounted in the rafters of the basement and the filters are down there where it's easy to service the unit.

I run Iron out and some Water softner Cleaner every month to maintain the unit.

if you have plenty of room and are willing to have a second water pump, aeration is easy: you can make a sand filter with an aerator out of any kind of tank, bathtub, 50gal barrels etc etc. also putting chlorene down your well will help get rid of the rotten egg smell.
