Advice please......I have a Kubota L225 that is burning out the glow lamp (indicator on dash). I replaced the lamp and the new one glows bright and starts smoking about a second after the preheat switch is activated. There appears to be a short some where? Could one or more of the glow plugs be bad and drawing too many amps or is there a controller inline that could be bad. Is there a good way to check the glow plugs?
Thanks for any help......

When I had a bad glow plug the lamp did not turn red. I replaced the lamp thinking this would solve the problem ( the tractor would not start in cold weather, it turned over though) anyway once I realized the lamp was not shorted out I took each glow plug out and checked for continuity with my meter. Just touch one lead to the terminal and one to the body of the plug and that will tell you. If you have resitance it's good if there is nothing on the meter it's bad. Mine was easy to tell there was a burnt out hole in one side. Two out of three where bad. As to the lamp that's what it should do when you have a closed circut. The resistance caused by the power going through the plugs makes the lamp glow like any electric element would when it gets hot but, not too hot just orange red, and mine did smoke some at first when it was new. You said it burnt out the first lamp? Or was there another problem to start with? Starting troubles maybe?

Hope this helps,

Scott

Thanks for the info......I checked all (3) glow plugs all appeared to be ok....installed new glow lamp and it burnt out in less than a second......got very hot very quick......checked voltage and was 11.5 volts.....everything looks ok, but something is shortiing out......maybe in the wiring?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

What your describing sounds like the lamps/bulbs are not rated for the voltage at the socket or maybe the glowplugs are grounding through the lamp socket. A wiring diagram may help in this case to help find what is suppose to go where and which grounds do what, it's hard to say without a wiring diagram.
