Glow Timer Blows 5A Fuse

/ Glow Timer Blows 5A Fuse #21
oldnslow, I suspect when he connects the timer in the harness he is plugging in something else beside the timer as the timer is probably controlled by a relay. I may be wrong but I doubt the fuse goes directly to the timer, having said that, this would not the first time I have over thought something.

The only way to know for sure is to look at the diagram and find what all the fuse goes to. He has the diagram and may need to use a magnifying glass to see the circuit as he said the print is very small.

U mention it is a 5 amps fuse, i'm pretty sure that this fuse will not power the glow plugs, glow plugs current draw will be much higher.
are u sure it is or was a 5 amp fuse ?

Which tractor do u have ?

I'm back again -- this time with a question to the TYM273 community; Does anyone out there have a "Readable" electric schematic?
I have one but it's tiny (cannot read even with magnify glass) and when I went to get it enlarged it made no difference. The gals at ups office told me the file was corrupted. They asked me if I had it on a disc and I don't. I need a schematic on some kind of file so it could be downloaded into their machines and copied. Probably nothing is out there but I had to ask!

Otherwise I'm going to be tearing apart my entire electric system line-by-line and basically in the unknown to try find where it's shorting.
Thanks if anyone out there has one and will share it. Greg

Found this thread with a picture of a diagram that might be for your tractor. It is not wonderful but may be better than what you have. There is a relay that is between the glow timer and the glow plugs that would be a good place to check for your short.

Thanks K5lwq, That's the one I've got (hard copy -- in my operators manual) but it won't enlarge to an easily readable size unfortunately! I'm trying to get a printable picture to have with me in the garage whilst working on the harness. If I had that in an (pdf, jpeg, tiff) or some sort of file I could transfer to the ups store they might be able to get it enlarged.

For starters the glow plug relay is a 15amp fuse not 5amp and that goes to the glow timer so you might try that first.
If that blows the 15amp the glow timer goes to many places and they will have to be eliminated one at a time.

Not going to argue with you garry1p, but I've owned my TYM since new and it "came" with a 5 amp fuse in the breaker box for the glow timer and is stated in the manual and in the fuse box cover listing of fuses "5 Amps" for the fuse. I agree one would expect it to be higher rated but it's not. Thanks for your comment/interest.

No problem, I was looking at the diagram K5lwq posted, it shows a 15 amp fuse direct to the glow timer.

The diagram may not be for your tractor.

I've suggested this before:
Substitute an old style 12v headlight for the fuse. Easiest way is solder two wires to the blown fuse, other end to light & plug fuse in.
Now when turning key light will burn brightly & you can move/wiggle wires & unplug/plug in things until light dims.
Disconnect glow plugs if easy to get to.
