Glow Timer Blows 5A Fuse

/ Glow Timer Blows 5A Fuse #21
oldnslow, I suspect when he connects the timer in the harness he is plugging in something else beside the timer as the timer is probably controlled by a relay. I may be wrong but I doubt the fuse goes directly to the timer, having said that, this would not the first time I have over thought something.

The only way to know for sure is to look at the diagram and find what all the fuse goes to. He has the diagram and may need to use a magnifying glass to see the circuit as he said the print is very small.

U mention it is a 5 amps fuse, i'm pretty sure that this fuse will not power the glow plugs, glow plugs current draw will be much higher.
are u sure it is or was a 5 amp fuse ?

Which tractor do u have ?

I'm back again -- this time with a question to the TYM273 community; Does anyone out there have a "Readable" electric schematic?
I have one but it's tiny (cannot read even with magnify glass) and when I went to get it enlarged it made no difference. The gals at ups office told me the file was corrupted. They asked me if I had it on a disc and I don't. I need a schematic on some kind of file so it could be downloaded into their machines and copied. Probably nothing is out there but I had to ask!

Otherwise I'm going to be tearing apart my entire electric system line-by-line and basically in the unknown to try find where it's shorting.
Thanks if anyone out there has one and will share it. Greg

Found this thread with a picture of a diagram that might be for your tractor. It is not wonderful but may be better than what you have. There is a relay that is between the glow timer and the glow plugs that would be a good place to check for your short.

Thanks K5lwq, That's the one I've got (hard copy -- in my operators manual) but it won't enlarge to an easily readable size unfortunately! I'm trying to get a printable picture to have with me in the garage whilst working on the harness. If I had that in an (pdf, jpeg, tiff) or some sort of file I could transfer to the ups store they might be able to get it enlarged.

For starters the glow plug relay is a 15amp fuse not 5amp and that goes to the glow timer so you might try that first.
If that blows the 15amp the glow timer goes to many places and they will have to be eliminated one at a time.

Not going to argue with you garry1p, but I've owned my TYM since new and it "came" with a 5 amp fuse in the breaker box for the glow timer and is stated in the manual and in the fuse box cover listing of fuses "5 Amps" for the fuse. I agree one would expect it to be higher rated but it's not. Thanks for your comment/interest.

No problem, I was looking at the diagram K5lwq posted, it shows a 15 amp fuse direct to the glow timer.

The diagram may not be for your tractor.

I've suggested this before:
Substitute an old style 12v headlight for the fuse. Easiest way is solder two wires to the blown fuse, other end to light & plug fuse in.
Now when turning key light will burn brightly & you can move/wiggle wires & unplug/plug in things until light dims.
Disconnect glow plugs if easy to get to.

I came back to give a follow-up. I got it starting again - BUT - there's always a but isn't there, I found a broken wire and spliced it. The larger (maybe a 12g) black w/red stripe wire going/coming from the glow timer.....it also had a "tiny" wire (maybe 14g) same colors attached to it. I spliced them both, saw 12v to the plugs and dash light came on/off.....I thought great put it all back together and see that with the fuse inserted - the plugs stay light all the time. Darn. At least it no longer blows the fuse! I made a fuse holder tool and now I insert the fuse, heat the plugs manually, remove fuse and start engine. It's a pita but works.

The main problem I have is that I cannot get the schematic to enlarge and still show the colors and descriptions of the wires. Something going/coming from the ignition switch isn't working right any more (I think) and it's just to tight of quarters to work on tiny wires under the dash! It's definitely an awkward area to try unwrapping a large bundle of wires and doing so without a useable schematic is traumatic! I'm leaving it as it is for now and hoping I have no more shorts!

Thanks to all whom offered guidance and support!! I sure needed it!! Greg

I would check glow plugs. Disconnect and resistance check should all be the same.
Relay could be bad (stuck closed) or bad timer 16626692100.

Fuddy, All those items are new. Not the problem. The schematic you posted is great BUT it won't enlarge and allow the colored line items be read or traced. The color of the lines is essential to my mission. Thanks for the thought though.

New glow plugs and resistance checked? New doesn't mean good nowadays especially.

Yes, Yes, and Yes I know new can't be blindly trusted. Tractor starts and runs fine. Just have to manually put fuse in to run plugs, take out fuse and start. Not use key switch for glow. I have not yet changed that switch; but as long as all works as is I'm fine with that.

I'm thinking the way it's supposed to work is key on supplies power to timer. Timer activates relay which supplies glow plugs +12V. After 15 seconds timer power to relay drops out which cuts power off to glow plugs.
With voltage checks you could see where problem is. It sounds like relay is staying energized.

On my T233 and T293, you turn the key counterclockwise to engage the glow plugs, and then when the glow plug light goes out, you turn clockwise to the start position.

When you turn the key counterclockwise, the timer relay latches, and fires the glow plug relay, until the timer runs it's course, and it shuts off, breaking the feed to the glow plug relay. Immediately after the glow plug goes out you turn to the start position. If it has been a while since I have started the tractor, I turn to the run position for a few minutes to let the lift pump precharge the injection pump.
