JD 5105 w/ 522 loader
Well, ..not trying to be a horse's rear here... but I was checking out some of the other sections of the forum here and saw a post in the "Chinese Tractors" section that said "glad I bought Chinese." The poster, an apparently nice and knowledgeable fellow, said that he seemed to find a lot of comments about how the American (big 3) tractors had a lot of problems and such.. I just recently purchased my JD 5105 and interestingly enough I based my decision, in small part, by web surfing the various "tractor forums" and making an assessment of the problems presented by the various makes, models.. . My non-scientific research found that JD had fewer problems, better warranty service, better quality build, but does cost more than a foreign tractor... And the JD5105 is made in America! I found that many of the foreign tractors had "maintenance issues"... lacked good service, etc.. (understand these are general statements) ... If I have a problem with my JD, my dealer will come by, load it up and take it to his shop and fix it.. pronto..

So, this post puts in the good word for the American tractor!
Even though I paid more than I would have for a Chinese tractor--- I am SO GLAD I bought an AMERICAN tractor! And heck, you can't even buy an "I'd rather be riding my "KAMA" bumper sticker! he he

Glad I bought American / John Deere

I feel better now :)

I too am "Glad I bought American". Having said that, all makes and models of equipment can have problems. Good support from the dealer is important. Buying American is imporant. Keeping as many Americans employed as possible is Very important. Cheers to you for putting in a "Good Word For American Products".

Yup, they are great tractors. My parking area is full of green machines!
However...don't look to closely at where all the parts are from :)

Actually my biggest and most traditional one was made in Mannheim Germany and the engine (JD 4 cyl) was made in Saran France.

My newest is a 3720 and it was made in the US, but the engine is Japanese (Yanmar). The 300CX loader is made in Canada but the major castings are made in China...

All very good stuff though. Not without flaws and design issues but generally higher quality than any of the competition.

I too am glad that I bought American. That goes for my truck, my wife's SUV, the JD 5420, etc... Honestly, it was really never that big of an option in my mind.

Now if I could just get my company to stop sending high paying manufacturing, accounting, information management and engineering jobs across the pond, I would feel really good! Until then, I will not buy any of their products that are manufactured offshore.

I to am glad to buy American or Canadian!!! My neighbour down the road just bought a 35hp Chinese tractor with loader and backhoe. Seems like solid castings and steel. But all of the hydraulic's and levers on the tractor leave lots of room for improvement. That being said I used his BH to dig up my water line?? The old 2520 was a little un happy to be left out!! He paid around $17,000, I paid $25,000 without the Bh. After close inspection of the import I am sure he is going to have to be handy with a wrench to keep it running over the years!! Maybe I will be able to return the favour when I get my 46 bh???

Cheers!!

Not sure how these two items are related? I know many Americans that are employed by non-American companies.

I have a domestic market Yanmar & it takes 9 days to get parts IF they have them at the warehouse in Chicago. Otherewise, 3 weeks if I am lucky.

I bought a JD to replace it & I get parts the next day.

When you break down, it makes a difference!

Dealer = Americans with jobs. Made in USA factory + Dealer = More Americans
with jobs. American Company + USA factory + Dealer = Even More Americans with Jobs. My point being clearer now I hope.

So Non-American Dealers and Factories located in the US don't hire American employees? Wow, that's news to me!

Relating this to my original post, the foreign tractors I looked at before my purchase were all made outside the US.. only the dealership was here.. and all the parts for those tractors are made outside... (again, I am talking about the tractors I looked at).. are there any Chinese tractors "made in America"?

My John Deere was made, assembled, etc in Georgia, USA..

Local dealer is American company (not refering to product manufacturer)
USA factory Employes American workers (not refering to product manufacturer) American Company keeps money (profit + taxes) in USA. Buy what you want. I try to keep as many Americans in the process as I am able.

I thought 05 series were made in mexico, when I used to look them up it would say they are being shipped from mexico anyway.

Could you tell if the poster who was proud they bought a tractor made overseas a member of the U.S. Senate?

I recently bought a Kubota L3130. When comparing it to an equivalent size JD, I was impressed with the beefy look of the JD, but the loader looked comparatively flimsy compared to the kubota loader. I'm not sure what moder JD it was, but the sales rep told me the loader and other parts of JD are made in China. Glad I bought Kubota.

Gator boy, it seems we can always count on you for a refreshing positve reply. Keep up the good work!

My 4110 was made in Japan, but the backhoe was made in the US an dthe loader was made in Canada.

Of course my 4110 was made in Japan, but John Deere is making a plenty on them, anyway, so part of the money, probably a big part is staying in America. And it was my understanding that the tractors are only put together in Georgia, hard to tell, where some of the parts for them came from. I'm not sure you can find any tractor that is 100% made in this country, or much of anything else for that matter. Just my 2 cents worth.

I will have to repeat what was said above:
"....Buy what you want. I try to keep as many Americans in the process as I am able."

Heck, I know it is difficult to find something these days that is not made in China.. but with this large purchase, I had an obvious choice (for me)... i chose to pay a little extra...

By the way, not sure what loader you looked at, but the 522 loader is not "comparatively flimsy." My neighbor has a Kubota w/fel (nice tractor, good quality), ...I can see the difference..
Isn't this the "JD owning/operating" forum?

AND (to add some humor) I "get" to wear a John Deere hat, a "Nothing Runs Like a Deere" t-shirt, and I get to drink coffee from a John Deere mug!!!

Put that in your pipe and smoke it! (lol)

OK.. I'll stop before I get any more "testy"... :)

Also in the garage:
Ford F-250 4x4
Ford E-250 conversion van
Ford E-350 Super Duty RV
Chev 1500 Suburban

BattalionChief - Last year I bought my JD5325 on quality, ergonomics, and to a small extent that JD was headquartered in the US. Not for a moment did I kid myself that everything on my JD was made in the US but I knew the design specifications sent offshore for parts manufacture were to JD standards and that the assembly took place in the US. When I purchased the 5325 the delivery date was set and missed even when my dealer checked the delivery status within a day of his expected receipt of tractor. On the day of delivery he called me and said that manufacturing changed the delivery status to a later date. I found the email address for JD on their homepage and fired off a concerned email based on their delivery status monitoring system. The next day I received a personal phone call from JD headquarters and the person knew my order, the status, the reason for the delay, and when I could expect the tractor. This was a refreshing experience to me in that they called me to answer my concerns and it was not a hired responder service. After one year I'm pleased with my tractor, the dealer, and the company.... but I know that they offshore work just like any other multi-national company based here in the US.

AN FYI:
From what I have been able to find out, my 5000 series tractor was put together in Augusta, Georgia. I am not sure any 5000 series are made in Mexico, but I am pretty sure the PowerTech diesel motor in my 5105 was assembled in Mexico, then sent to Georgia. I have also found that some Deere Excavators are assembled in Mexico.
