I'm looking in to getting a back up generator for my home.
I have a 870 JD and would like to know what you think about a pto style generator. Thanks

Mmike,

Welcome to TBN!!
Do a search on generators or look at some recent postings. There's all kinds of info on generators out here.

Personally, (my on 2 cents), I use a stand-alone generator, log-splitter... For convenience, logistics and using a little gas engine works better for me. I know the tractor can run all of these but I'd rather put the hours on something different.

And, if you're in a situation you need a generator, you may well be in a situation where you need that tractor mobile...

good point. but I live in MD. We don't loose power for a very long time most of the time but it sure is nice to have a back up when we do. I just didn't want to go out to the garage and find out that a stand alone wouldn't start because of not being used. using the tractor pto I pretty much know it will run since I use it all summer cutting grass and pushing snow in the winter. Just looking to see what everyone thinks before i go out and spend alot of money on something and end up going the wrong way.. thanks

Mmike,
Don't you get a good amount of ice storms in MD?

For a stand alone generator (and other rarely used equipment), I make it a point to go out and run for about 10 minutes every month or 2. In doing so, never had a problem with them not starting when needed.

Mmike,

Look in the projects forum. Thread is "Generator deal".
Varmint in MD just got a good deal on a stand-alone generator at Home Depot. You may want to consider.
