John Deere 870
My 870 PTO has started disengaging frequently while bush hogging. Tractor is 4wd with live PTO. No play in PTO shaft. Any resistance such as tall grass causes PTO to disengage. Bush hog seems fine. About 1400 hrs. on tractor. External PTO linkage seems fully engaged.

Hope someone can point me in right direction. Would like to avoid dealer. Thanks.

Welcome to TBN.
Could be the linkage is worn and not pushing the bellcrank #20 that engages the PTO in the case all the way. Other possibility is the PTO detent (#10, 11) is worn, but to change the spring or shim up would require taking the 3pt top cover off to access.

Agree with TractorTech

What has been the last tranny oil change? Is it possible the oil is causing sluggish movement?

But check the external movement of the linkage too, for wear or not engaging.
