well when your deisel gets stuck call me i'll pull you out. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. i have nuthin against the deisel . the only thing i don't care for is the open clutch belt .it seems like if your gonna pay all that money the thing should atleast come equiped to go places.as for gas break down are you meaning the engine breakin down or do you mean the gas goin bad from not useing it?if so why spend the money on something that won't get used? a deisel engein is better but they just don't have the right stuff on it . does the mule come with a deisel and a belt enclosure if so go with the mule if a deisel is what you really want. but as for the power of the gas hpx it's there i never needed more power from it. it hauled plenty of fire wood out the woods not to mention my 16' double axle trailer with a full load. so it boils down to if your gonna leave it sittin in the shed an not use it and not go into any mud then go with the deisel but if your gonna use it daily and in the mud or water too then go with the gas. they are both great machines just one has one more feature than the other. as for rangers they are nice but if i was to hook my trailer to it loaded the rear suspention would squat so bad it would bottom out. i like the solid rear axle on the gator because nomatter how much of a load you got on the hitch you still have your shock travel because the hitch is connected to the bottom half. i seen a couple of utv's that tried pullin a heavy load and it bottomed out thier rear end doing it that can't be good.

Tommy,

If I am not mistaken, you can have the dealer add this for you. I am not sure, but I think my diesel has one, of course it has a number of little dealer installed extras. As for the diesel, I have taken mine in some pretty rough places and had the axle dragging because the snow I was going through was so deep, and never a wimper. Having used both, each has its advantages: the gasoline one is less expensive and lighter by a bit. It will also likely last 1000+ hours if well maintained. The diesel would double that, but not many of us (including me) really need that much durability. The diesel uses less than half the fuel of the gas model I had, and is MUCH stronger pulling and hauling loads. Where I live the extra beans come in handy, as we have many 15%-30% grades and lots of steep hills. This is where the diesel shines. Lewis lives about 60 miles from me; it is not as steep there, but pretty steep, so he may also favor the diesel for those reasons.

if your deisel has a clutch enclosure your the one and only.deisel doen't come with nor do they make a clutch enclosure for it. all you can get is what is on it now and that's a splash guard. check with your dealer he will tell you. but if you ain't goin in the mud or nuthin wet then go with the deisel it does have a little more power. but for me i rather the gas with the clutch enclosure(i live in south louisiana) way down at the bottom and even not goin in to deep water the belt sometimes slips just from water splashing on it .that's why i got the enclosure it stopped all that not i can put it in water up to and sometimes even over the floor boards. as for the gas breakin downit don't stay in the tank that long. i use my hpx on a daily basis. and for draggin the rear axle that ain't too deep thats only about 6 1/2 inches and it drags. i put the 27'' itp 589's and it raised the rear end up atleast 2 1/2 inches. and i put the lift kit i hade in the front and raised it 2 1/4 inches. but i needed the hight for goin through the mud and water. if i was just usein it for work and no mudd ridin the the diesel would be nice but i can't see payin the extra money for it when the gas model does evrnything i need. if you need more ump out of your gas model the just back down the screw on the gas peddle /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tommy,

You might be correct about the clutch enclosure, as I can visibly see my drive belt when I went out and checked it after my last post. I would say, though, that I have not experienced any slippage when running through the creek at the back part of my property. I doubt though that it is as deep as some of your areas. As far as the snow goes, it was 16" of snow. I also have the larger ITP tires, and even with the extra clearance, it still dragged. Interestingly, the Gator just kept moving along. As far as the gasoline-diesel debate, I think either is fine. I would say, though, that having had both the diesel is a better performer, even during my recreation time. On flat ground I think the acceleration would be about the same, but on hills the diesel would leave the gasoline one behind, and my dealer modified the gas model somewhat. Of course, neither of these vehicles will win a land speed record, as 25-30 is about it for mine (downhill it will go a little faster). Personally, as per my previous and initial post, I think the gas model would be plenty adequate for Lewis' needs, but I have been impressed with the diesel model.

i agree with you about the deisel being more powerfull. it really doesn't matter witch one he gets just as long as he gets a hpx /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif i have always been a big fan of the deisel engine over the gas engine. but the thing that got me was the no belt enclosure for the deisel i don't know why they don't make one . maybe in the future they will come out with an up grade but for now they don't have one but i wouldn't get that mule 3010 i just don't think it will hold up like the hpx will. the hpx is alot stronger made than the mule. i haven't seen where the radiator fan is located but when you go into water with it it throws water all over the engine from what i hear and it kills it.on the hpx the radiator is up front like a truck or car the hpx is just better all around. you should lift the front up with the homemade kit. it streers alot easier now . before it kinda had the nose dive affect .

The other day my stable hand had my '05 HPX 4x4 diesel Gator hookup to the manure dump trailer. The trailer is the one you can get from Northern Tool ( the two ton dump with
duel axles). This trailer was loaded with manure and wet shavings ( maybe not two tons ). The stable hand drove over
a part of the gound where months ago we bury one of my cows that past away. We just got 4.33 inches of rain here and the gound was is very soft. The stable hand drove the Gator and trailer over the soft hole the cow was in. The Gator's front tires were in the air and the mud was to the frame of the Gator. Now the Gator is still hook to the trailer with manure and wet shavings in it. He put the Gator in four wheel drive and walk the whole thing out of the hole. He is
sold on the power of this machine and I was a long time ago.

That is why I have two HPX 4x4 diesel Gators for the business! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

now this is just a joke and don't get mad but you said the front tires were in theiar (no ground underneath them right?) so how did puting it in 4 whell drive help you? are you sure he didn't just lock the rear end? remember i'm just messin with you /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif an hpx in an hpx /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif hpx's are just bad to the bone whether they are gas or deisel. you can't go wronge with buyin iether model. it's just that one has a belt enclosure witch enables it to go through alot more tough stuff than the other. and one has a little more power.

Having owned both gas and diesel Gators I would definitely agree with what you said. One other feature that makes the diesel so much nicer is fuel injection. I haven't looked in the last year so maybe the new gas powered Gators are fuel injected, but if they are still carb, the cold natured part always annoyed me. Most of my runs were short runs with long waits and then short runs again. It was really a hassle screwing with the choke just about the entire time I was trying to make a short trip from the barn to the lake or from the barn to the house etc.

fuel injection is real nice to have i wish the gas model had it.i recntly climbed up a ditch that was so much of an incline that gas was dumping out my over flow line. but she never puttered out. both the gator hpx deisel and gas model are great machines. and about the tires in the air i was just messin with him /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif i have typing mistakes too.but i do believe him about the pulling power and as long as the belt is dry the hpx will pull any load all you need is traction. maybe the choke thing would be a problem up north but not realy down here. i do choke the engine to start it for the first time of the day after that unless it has been setting for over 2 hours it will fire right up but the choke is right next to the seat not a real big deal to pull the choke.
