gas leak

My FIL has a husky 455 rancher and it leaks gas out of the carb when the gas cap is off. Any idea's why? Once he puts the cap on its ok.

either the float is sinking, or there is gunk in the line not allowing the gas needle to close

But why would it stop when the cap is put back on?

actually im going to retract my comments, im not sure there is even a float bowl on the unit, i have never had trouble with my chainsaw carbs. i initially thought this was a lawn mower
