Game Food Plots

I planted our 4 plots a few weeks ago and got them in one day before the only rain we had. They are growing but I am affraid that the heat 95+ is going to kill my clover out.

I have a off the subject question? I planted clover and oats in one of my plots. Well the dang turkeys found the clover seed before it could get up and now I have BIG bare spots.. I cultipacked it but they sratched it all up. Looks like someone took a rake and put grooves all over- and spread about 1000 turkey feathers everywhere. How do I re-seed? can I just broadcast and cultpack again? Anyway to keep them big birds out? or just plant right before it rains?

I don't know how they grow in the south:but in the far North(upper NYS),I plant soybeans and corn.This year I broadcast soybeans over the corn planting....awesome deer food plots.Soybean is something like 38 percent protein.The deer feed on the growing plants all summer and dig thru the snow to get the beans in the winter.Any evening right now the deer are in the beans heavy.The corn is planted with a four row planter and the soybeans I broadcast with my ATV spreader.We had tremendous growing season this year;farmers started cutting corn the first of September;at least a month early.I try something new each year;planted winter rye first week in Sept.

You could reseed as suggested and that should work fine. The clover that comes up, if let go to seed and then brush hog it, will spread and probably cover the blank areas. Just will take a 2-3 years. Ken Sweet

Though we can buy seed for food plots here in the northeast there seems to be little that is actually good to grow here. I always put in some winter rye, and the deer usually love it in the spring when it is the first thing green, but of course that doesn't do much for hunting. This summer I put in buckwheat which did well, but the deer, and even turkeys didn't touch it at all. I've been a bit under the weather, but am ready to till in the buckwheat now, and have some winter rye seed to put down. Does anyone have any suggestions for what else might work for fall seeding in the NH area?

Clover or Alfalfa. You'll get a better establisment if you kill (not just turn) whatever is growing now, but either way, the deer love both. They prefer the clover slightly over alfalfa, but around here, it is a little more difficult to keep year after year, where the alfalfa will compete better with the weeds and grasses.

We cut for hay the first clover/grass crop and then let the second clover crop go to seed. We either let the cattle spread the seed through the manure or brush hog to spread the seed. Still Got a good stand in with fescue and orchard grass with no reseeding clover in 25 years. Ken Sweet

Can somebody else plant your food plot for you?

My hunting buddy will have to learn how to drive the Kioti CK30. I think it will be simple as the disc is already on and the ground has been semi-broken. We were just waiting on some rain.

He has a game camera at one of the fields. I have included a couple of shots which tell us WE HAVE to get the fields planted. These are pretty good size for our area of Alabama

I am slowing learning how to use crutches. My initial problem was the good leg (left one that was not broken) was so tender from ankle sprain and trauma, that I was reluctant to put much pressure on it. Only problem was that is my only means of mobility. I have rested it the last few days, swelling has gone down, and I am getting round better. Thanks.

My wife thinks the little whitetails are pretty too. But they did a number on her herb garden and now she has joined the other side. I have to fence in my garden to protect it from the deer.

Being laid up is no fun for sure, but take good care of your legs. I wish you a speedy, and full recovery! Deer are good to have around, good company, and good food too. Just have to keep it all in perspective. I enjoy having a few of them feed in my yard while I'm gathering, and dumping leaves in the fall, and I enjoy them on my table too.

We're finally getting some rain. We got about 1 inch last night and today, with 3-5 inches called for this week. I planted my food plot on Labor Day weekend. Winter rye and rape. I disked the rye in about 5 inches then rolled the rape seed in on top of that. Rye had come up some, and rape had sprouted in the tire tracks, enough for a crop to shoot over, but not as thick as I wanted. I hope now it will finish sprouting the seeds that were in dry ground to fill in the field. We have a heavy acorn crop here, and the sports writers are saying the deer kill will be down this year because fewer deer will need to eat in fields since they can find so much food in the woods. We'll see. Our county is still in the earn-a-buck program, where you have to shoot an anterless deer before you can shoot a second buck. With so many deer around, I don't need to plant a food plot, but it makes for a fun time getting ready for deer season.

I have 8 acres at my home, so I created a bow hunting plot behind my house. It took 550ft of hose, but the wheat, clover,and oats are coming up. I am still waiting on the brasicas. It should be ready to go on saturday!

Great setup there DG. What part of Virginia? My son is in the Richmond area. He and I spent many hours bowhunting while he was in school, but now he is father of two little boys, and a demanding job downtown. I sent him some pictures from the deer camera and he was excited.

Hope the big one comes out during daylight.

Have had 2 inches total at my home since last night. Talked to my folks about 70 miles north of here, and they got almost 4 inches total since last night, and are due to get one more small band showing on the radar now. That's good stuff, hopefully the 1000lbs of seed we put out Saturday week ago will start to germinate.

Untill this weekend we had not had rain in about 2 months everything was brown and dried up like it had been frosted on. I saw no point to even think about starting to plant anything as it would not grow, if it germinated it would have burned up.

Those are some nice young deer, look like long tines on them and they appear to only be 2.5 yr olds.
