Is there a way to test the IR thermometer? I guess an old pessimist has to show his ugly head some where. Not doubting your test, I would like to have one myself but would like to know how accurate the HF unit is? Can you test boiling water with one? or calibrate it with the boiling water?

^ Yes - funny you should mention it.
Not trusting cheap measurement tools from China, that's the first thing I did when I got it home from the store, bones!
Set up on the kitchen stove with a pot filled with water and a chunk of anodized aluminum, suspended on a string, under the surface for a target.
I was shocked at how accurate the thing is. Very handy when sugaring time rolls around, too.
I had to get a second one so that the one next to the wood stove never has an excuse to leave its side.
The first one kept wandering off to the furnace room or the shop 8^).
