Yanmar FX-26D 4x4 Diesel
Looking for expert help on my newly acquired Yanmar FX-26D. (Please be patient since I am new to tractoring). It’s a 4x4 but I can’t seem to get the front wheels engaged. There is a small foot pedal on the right floorboard which indicates up for 2WD and down for 4WD. I was working with this all day trying to get into 4WD, with no luck. I tried all combinations, in gear, in neutral, moving, stopped. I can push the pedal down in all these cases but the front drive still does not engage. I am sure of this because I got stuck several times with the back tires spinning and the front tires doing nothing. Sometimes the pedal stays down and most of the time I have to actually hold it down (to keep it down). But, even when it is held down, the front drive is not engaging. It is a completely reconditioned machine and I was told that the 4WD worked OK prior to delivery. Am I missing something here, or doing something wrong? Am I activating the correct lever/pedal to engage 4WD? There is a small lever just to the left of this pedal also on the right side of the tractor that is not labeled. Is that part of the 4WD system. I do not have a manual so have no other reference for what all the levers are used for. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You are locking the rear diff. The front engage will be a lever. It will just move back and forward. It is usually on the left side of the machine. The PTO wiil have several positions.

Thanks for your feedback. Well, ignorant me, I just assumed that the pedal on the tractor's right side (on the floorboard)with a label next to it with an arrow and "2WD" pointing up and "4WD" pointing down was the correct one for engaging 4WD. I do not remember seeing a lever on the left side (I will check tonight). Do you know what the small lever that I mentioned in my initial post, also positioned on the right side next to the pedal we are discussing, is for (there is no label for the lever, could this possibly be the 4WD lever? Thanks again.

I agree with Kaysupply about the pedal being the locking differential, If it is operated by the heel of your foot. The 4WD should be a lever located in the same general area as the pedal. It should be a short throw (in-out) lever that engages while operating the clutch.

BTW: Welcome to TBN.

Thanks guys. I will check this out tonight. I really appreciate your feedback. So do I need to engage the clutch when I move the 4WD lever in either direction? That's assuming I indeed find the lever wherever it is located on my machine.

If the tractor is in gear use the clutch. If it is in neutral you probably wan't have to. I have slid it into 4x4 while moving not using the clutch, but I would work up to getting the feeling of how it works. For sure not while under a pull or stuck and spinning. Another point to bring up, never engage the diff lock without using the clutch. If you do while it is spinning you could be buying a new axle. They are hard to find, is an understatement.

Can see it in the pic. The short lever above the foot petal for diff lock.

Yes, I do see the 2WD/4WD lever you are referring to. Seems the same lever for my FX-26D is positioned near the floorboard just to the left of the Diff pedal, but similar to yours, both are on the right side of tractor's center hump. When I push this lever forward (down) it still does not engage the front tires. The lever moves fine, it just doesn't do anything. What should I hear or feel when I move this lever forward and backward? By the way, your tractor looks very nice and has more decals than mine. Some of my levers, pedals, and knobs are not labeled so I have no idea what they do. For example, the turn knob in the center below your seat, I have one also but it's not labeled. What does that knob do? Thanks for your help.

Sierrav,

Where did you buy your tractor? And did they offer any operators manual or instruction with your purchase? How about a warranty if there is something wrong with the 4wd operation? I am only asking as it would seem your (ANY) Yanmar would shift into 4WD without any problem...unless there is a linkage, or other problem yet discovered.

Hope you get it figured out and good luck.

Mark

Ernie you're too kind but have to confess that is the pic I took of the tractor at your place when I was still looking. All the credit goes to you.

Right now the tractor is looking a lot less clean but shortly when the weather improves, it'll get cleaned up again.

For the OP, have to give thanks to Ernie for the decals.

The knob controls flow to the 3 Pt Hitch. All the way in locks the 3 PT.

Up on the Front Wheel drive lever activates. If it isn't working after pulling up on lever and putting in gear, then it has a problem. Check to see if it still has the front drive shaft. If it does then check to see what is moving and where it stops. Start from the Xmission forward. Remember both the 4WD and Xmission must be engaged.

Anyone have any FX parts tractors. That very pretty left side dash panel shown in the picture was burned in a welding accident.

Luv my FX24. Had it for 6 Yrs. Great tractor.

Thanks blackd, mark777, kaysupply and others who replied to help me on this. The problem I reported above (FX-26D not activating front drive when shifting to 4WD) is resolved. Seems there are metal ball-bearings around the forward drive shaft (toward the front of the forward drive shaft, which is enclosed) that somehow fell out of place or were misplaced during tractor reconditioning, or whatever, that prevented the front drive from engaging. Replacing these bearings fixed the problem and now my 4WD works great. This work was handled by the previous owner (reseller) and covered under my warranty - that's the good news. Does this problem and/or fix ring any bells out there with other Yanmar 4x4 owners?
Quick question blackd ...how does the 3-pt hitch knob actually work, that is, does all the way in lock the 3-pt at whatever position it is at, lock it so that it can't operate? What does halfway in do or all the way out do?
Also, you said move the lever "down" to engage 4WD, I have to move the lever up for 4WD on my 26. Does that sound right? Thanks.

Yes, the ball bearings usually fall out during disassembly or re-assembly, but not under normal use /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif.

Very interesting. Hopefully this will never happen again ... well, at least, as long as the tractor stays together, right! Thanks again. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I misspoke in the lever direction. I very seldom use the 3Pt adjustment, so I'm guessing here, but I think it will lock it in whatever position it is sitting.
