Yesterday while loading equipment with my 5530 MFWD the right front wheel locked up ... I thought maybe something was in front of the wheel ... I backed up, nothing and then the wheel spun fine ... it locked up a couple more times. I put it in the shed, used the bucket to get the front off the ground and spun the wheel by hand. No apparant noise ... all felt well.

So today I'm going to tear into it to see what I find ... any ideas?

I'd be looking for chunks of metal, hope it's nothing to serious.

Yes I'm hoping the same ... its probably going to be a gear. I'm sure its not going to be a simple little fix.

Was it locking up on pavement or sand/mud/grass? Is there any play in the 19 - 22- 27 bearing area? My thought is that if it is loose it will be binding the axle in this area on that side the other side will continue to turn. I agree with the debris theory to an extent, although a bearing that is failing and is put under load can stop rotating properly as well but I would think the axle would spin internally through this if it is not pressed on.

It was on grass ... I tore into it and it appears the #27 bearing failed ... literally came apart. I can be darn glad it hung up and slid and did not break any of those gears!! The pieces were all kinda floating around ... I quess one of the balls or chunks got caught in the gear and made the wheel slide.

Looks like I need bearing #27, the race and the seal and I should be back in business ... now if the dealer has them in stock.

Do yourself a favor and replace all of the bearings on that shaft. The damaged and exploded bearing 27 is on the upper side correct? This may have have and did send debris down and may have scarred the lower even if you don't feel it. My 2cents.

Very good suggestion ... I believe I will do that. Parts are being drop shipped from Branson 2-3 days to get them. Well that will give me alot of time to clean everything up.

allthough you'll have some down time and a fix, atleast it was not worse.

Your right ... imagine if those gears or spindle would have got damaged. Best thing I did was run it in the shop and get to it.

What a day so far. Yesterday I drained out two coffee cans of grease from the front drive ... sat a bucket under it in case any more grease came out ... the loader settled over night and put the front axle at an angle, crushed the bucket and I had grease all over the shop floor ... started to remove the old seal and old race ... punched right threw the seal and couldn't get it or the race removed and thought I'm gonna tear something up ... off to the machine shop for some help.

James says ....well your being to kind, you gotta wack that thing hard ... he lined up and blasted that punch with a swift blow and out came the seal and next blow the race ... oh well at least its out and nothing broke ... 10 bucks, thats 5 bucks per wack!!!!!

As they say, Education- Priceless!
Ain't it funny the more you try to keep it clean the more stuff happens and makes it's own mess!
If you are dealing with grease, paint, glue or caulking you might as well dip your fingers in it because you will wear it sooner or later.

Yep Priceless ... well tonight its got a jack under that side, even though there's probably no grease left in it !!!

Now I'm just waiting for parts .....

Be sure that the axle is level and you check oil both sides, in case you haven't though of that. My 3510 has dipsticks on fill plugs.

Thank you and yes I have dipsticks on both sides ... I quess the bearing I replaced counts on the grease being "tossed" up there.
