I recently put fender lights on my BX so I could mow essentially at night. I fly each Thursday and by the time I get home its headed into 8 to 8:30, so in order to get her done the lights were the ticket (I want alley lights next but that's a different thread). So this Thursday evening I took off the business clothes and put on my camo overalls (weekend wear, I never wash them love the smell of grease and diesel) and do my once around, crank her up and complete the tire pressure check, etc. Out onto the turf I go, fender lights on and loving the new visibility. In my head I keep thinking this is different, pay attention and don't make a costly mistake. So I cautiously go at it. I have a few hills on the property and generally cut the crest and leave the actual hills for the weedeater. No reason to wreck a $16k piece of equipment that a 300 dollar piece of equipment can handle in the day light the next morning. As I work my way across the crest and get to the end I slow to a stop and decide that putting the four wheel drive on is just extra insurance and so I engage the front wheels and turn to the left rolling down a hill I have rolled down a few times on this piece of equipment in the past. Well, that was a angel speaking to me. As I turn into the downhill the rears slide left (down the hill) and I powered out of the problem but not before getting the rocking motion of the tractor righting itself.
Lesson learned, use the four wheel drive. And my advice still stands and even I will follow it. "Don't use a $16k piece of equipment to do what a $300 dollar piece of equipment can do for you without risk." I had to wash the underwear and the coveralls.
