That's the reason I hunt! Only shot 2 does this year, and my fiancé got a buck. Have steaks roasts, breakfast and summer sausage, and burger in the freezer.

We had ribs tonight. First time I've ever eaten deer ribs. Very greasy and a lot of chewing, but good. This doe had more fat on her than any I have ever killed before. It's the 3rd Doe I harvested this year. No bucks this year. We have already eaten thru one of the deer. We prefer to eat venison when we can.

I owned meat markets for 30 years. I probably cut up 500 of them over the years.. I have never seen one yet that had any quality.. Now if you were hungry yes they will keep you alive..jmo

Different strokes for different folks. Not really sure why you felt the need to share your negative opinion in this thread. They'll do better than keep you alive. Venison is darned tasty cooked up right. We raised a couple of hogs this year and blended in about 15% ground pork with the venison we ground. Had burgers just last night that were very good. Venison will keep you alive, happy, and out of the meat department at stores where they sell pork that lived it's life locked in a barn and beef that stood knee deep in s#!t for the last year of it's life. Talk about lack of "quality"!

I think he was referring to the ribs. As for venison in general I prefer it to beef most of the time. I still like a nice porterhouse steak from time to time but prefer grass fed beef to grain fattened.

I believe it often depends on their diet, the deer on our farm which has a lot of beans, corn etc. handy is usually better than those we get out of more heavily forested areas.

Back home in Montana we used to get a lot of alfalfa fed whitetail deer as they would come down and graze the hay fields... good stuff. I shot a muley out in the desert a few years back and it had the best flavor... not something I really expected given the food options out there. I think meat preparation is key.... take them straight back to camp, skin, quarter, bag and hang in a cool spot.

I had bacon wrapped venison fillets on Saturday night. Paired them with a Becker Vineyards cabernet. That meant my meat and wine both came from the Texas hill country.

We're having venison sausage tonight.

I guess venison is an acquired taste. But I don't like tomatoes either. But love salsa, not the dance, the chip dip. I like tomato soup also. Kinda weird I guess. Had venison burgers once, hated them. But had a venison roast a few years later and it was very good. So I agree, preparation is key.

Everybody's tastes are different........I love oysters and up here we have access to the best in the world.......some people can't stand them.......we call those people dumb tourists.

I'll put a deer backstrap up against any cut of beef. I love the stuff.
