Autodesk is offering Inventor LT as a free download.
Autodesk Labs Technologies Autodesk Inventor LT - Technology Preview
I have heard it lets you create parts but not assemblies. It's a 1GB download. (Mine's sitting at 15% right now)

From my single experience, do not install the download manager - just download using the standard method.

I am not affiliated with Autodesk, just passing on a good deal for many who like to design stuff.

Oooh I'm up to 20% :)

Got it! Thanks for the link. I had used an early version of Inventor, but didn't know the LT version was available. I do have the LT version of AutoCad.
Thanks again..

I'm with you. I won't even bother installing a time limited package. I look at those as bait not freebies. Some companies now give away lite versions of their programs and sell the "PRO" versions. I do not use any cad software but enjoy 3d modeling. I use blender which is totally free open source software. Blender is not CAD it is 3D modeling.

I realize blender is not a cad replacement but it is fun to use. You can import your cad drawings and turn them into models.

Also free, with scaled modeling and an inventive interface, Google SketchUp. It's good for drawing buildings, fit them into landscape, fit into a photograph, etc. Fun!

Doh!
If I had noticed that I wouldn't have posted. Should have known better from Autodesk. They are all about the revenue stream.
Oh well, 3 months is better than the typical 30 days.

If you try it the basic drawing sequence is open a part (ipt) file, make a rough sketch, add dimensions that drive it to the right size, then extrude (for example) into a 3-D part. Open an idw file and select the saved part for the base view. Add projected views & dimensions and you have a drawing. None of the commands are like AutoCad. Even zoom scroll is backwards. The !@#$%^. Anyhow it is much more efficient than 2-D drafting.

I have been a Shop teacher since 1974. I currently teach CAD, Animation and 3d modeling. When you get old Drafting is nice and quiet compared to woodworking or auto which I have taught. Besides nobody ever gets injuried in my computer lab.
But I feel compelled here to post about AutoCads current money grubbing attitude.
When I started teaching CAD in 1991 AutoCad did everything it could to help our progarm and provided software for $100 a seat to schools. That latter went to $200. About 2 years ago they fired our excellent educational rep who worked with all the teachers I know.
Now they want about $35000 a classroom for their product instead of $3500. Myself and every teacher I know will never buy their product again. The funds are simply not available. AutoCad could care less that we are all no longer buying their product. Their support has been almost nonexsitent over the last few years. What a change in attitude.
In my school district we have 5 schools running their product. We are all switching to Solidworks and Cheif Architect.
Sad but money now seems to be their only motivation. Solidworks has taken a large part of their market and I can see why.
Anyway a long rant but I had to tell people where they are at now.

Have you heard of ProgeCAD? It's completely free for non-commercial use. It's very slick, and a very good knockoff of AutoCAD 2007-2008.

Have Blue,
When you downloaded ProgeCad2008 Smart there are 3 to choose from
(Server 1, Server 2, or Torrent download) I don't know what they mean by that. What did you choose?
Thanks, Lee

Having seen the original AutoCAD 1.x and the somewhat ready for prime time 2.5x, and using AutoCAD to make a living since Release 9 through AutoCAD 2004; I have seen Autodesk become more money grubbing with each new release. Although I no longer make a living as a CADD Dweeb on a regular basis, I still keep my software current because the new seat cost is prohibitive. Autodesk pretty much forces one to use their subscription program as they have timed new releases in such a manner to make the subscription semi-attractive. I've seen small firms put off upgrading and they get sticker shock when Autodesk no longer supports a specific release and earlier forcing companies to pay full freight for each new seat instead of the upgrade price when upgrade time does come around. Like the Fram man says, "You can pay me now, or pay me later."

Just as AutoCAD became the de facto CADD program and format standard for general drafting; it appears that SolidWorks has become the de facto standard for machine parts and similar design work. I know Autodesk has had Inventor out for some years now; but I don't know if they've been able to dent SolidWorks commanding market share in the MCAD (Mechanical CAD) field.

Also Autodesk purchased a company called Revit a few years back and they seem to be pushing that program for the architectural and building disciplines. Again, I don't know how successful that push is going for them.

I do use AutoCAD's (2008) 3D capabilities, and although they have improved; there is still limited solid editing capabilities, which makes it difficult to make changes to a design as it evolves.

Since I've been away from the business, I don't know if the MCAD companies that made SolidEdge and IronCAD are still around. If one is just goofing around with a CADD program with or without 3D capability, then a low cost or freebie program is probably OK. But if one makes a living using design software, I truly suggest sticking with a name brand product with a track record. There is nothing worse than committing to a CADD product that is orphaned because the company that made it went belly up and you can't import your CADD files into a different program.

I started with CADD in 1979 using Auto-Trol GS-100 through their Series 5000 software. I've seen and briefly used the long defunct Terak software back in the early 80's that was a knock off of Auto-Trol. Auto-Trol is still in business; but not as a CADD hardware/software manufacturer. I've used AutoCad since R9, and seen demos of Solidworks and Pro-Engineer. I've used Intergraph/Microstation through V3 and hated every moment of working with that software. Microstation is at V8 I believe. As I recall Autodesk bought TurboCad many years ago. I've also messed around with 3DS MAX from Autodesk. I could ramble on; but I've done enough for now.

Server1 and Server2 are just 2 different places to downlaod the software from.

THe torrent mirror is another way to get the software via peer-to-peer software program which you really dont need to worry about.

Just click on server1 or server2.

Thanks I'm going to download tonight and play around.

Thanks again, Lee

Thanks guys I have been looking for a CAD program. Like many others I have been using AutoCAD for years. I believe I started using it in Version 12 DOS. I have been away from for awhile and could not believe the price for the LT version.

On another note AUTOCAD is not the only money grubber out there. SDS a steel detailing software has developed and done the same thing that AutoCAD has. Real good service in their early years with reasonable pricing. Now that they have become the premier steel detailing software all bets are off.

I am an old Generic cad user/geezer and want some thing like it!
Commands were so easy like ZI= zoom in not like autocad were you have to type 1/2 a sentance a answer 30 questions to draw a line.

any suggestions
