I own a foton 254 and as far as I know, mine doesn't governor back up in tough spots. Got to rev up manually to compensate. I don't think the 404 is much different. I know a small dealer close to me who dyno'ed a 404 which came out to 45hp on the pto. Mine will puff a bit at first if I don't use the glow plugs at all so usually in the summer I'll hit the glow plug for 10 seconds or so and she burns clean off the start. How big is your load? you say bush hoggin? All guages are good? water oil etc.

My FT404 never shows any smoke at all and I never use the pre heat to start only gets down to about 2 deg C here at the coldest. Always fires up first time and as I pull my sprayer up a steep part of the vineyard the governor keeps the revs very close to those I use downhill or on the flat unless I use to high a gear and lug the engine. If you are only running the engine at 1500 your PTO speed is not at the recommended 540 RPM which maybe causing the engine to lug. The recommended RPM for 540 rpm PTO output is from memory 2,200. Have you tried choosing a lower gear and increasing the engine RPM's????. Have you changed / checked the amount of oil in the injection pump????. You may have corrosion/junk in the governor restricting its freedom of movement?

You completely rebuilt the engine?? What all did you do??
These governors are not isochronous, they have droop. It's a standard automotive type, and yes, they will try to recover from overloading.
Did you "rebuild" the injection pump and governor assembly too? It sounds to me like your timing is retarded.
A little white smoke on a cold startup can be normal, depending on atmospheric conditions.
I apologize, I just got a terrible headache from trying to read your post.

x2. Sounds like the injection pump was reinstalled without being timed properly.

How do you know the timing is "good"? How did you check it?

dongross,

If you look down at the lower right hand corner of your keyboard, you will find punctuation marks. These, used properly, make it much easier to read your posts. Your first post read more like a personal journal than a 21st century tractor owner with a question. That stream-of-consciousness writing style went out with James Joyce.

First off Dongross, I would like to welcome you to the tractorbynet forum. Glad to have you aboard I know there is a lot of people out there with a general interest in Foton tractors but not much info/knowledge on them.

Second, Please disregard any smart *** comments made about punctuation, grammer, writing styling etc. In my opinion it is very distasteful (especially to a new member) and does not represent our community in the least bit.

I don't own a foton and have only serviced one governor and that was on an old gasser tractor. The governor was a mechanical one hooked up to the main pulley. Mine was just the opposite though it wouldn't idle back down after the governor kicked in. Like Zonta said, mine was full of dust, dirt and grime and the centrifugal armature would slide when the rpms dipped but then snag. I can only guess that if this has a governor it should be mechanical and have some sort of linkage tied to the injector pump to pour more fuel in when the RPM's dip.

CHINESE TRACTOR OWNERS CLUB FORUM - Foton Here's a link for the Chinese Tractor Owners Forum of America. A lot of guys there are running Fotons. Check out the Dong Feng Forum too because I think they are pretty much essentially the same tractor but could be wrong.

By just browsing the linked forum it sounded like some foton owners were having problems with the fuel tank vent and were collapsing the supply line to the injector pump. It might be something worth checking out to see if it revs up faster with the fuel cap off.
