Ford 5000
Plowing snow I noticed that going in reverse it seemed like the reverse gear inside the tranny was seizing on the shaft it rides on. At least that's what I can describe it from an operators standpoint. Forward was OK but when backing up there was a strange squealing noise from the tranny. When I pushed in the clutch going in reverse it would stop instantly like something was binding. Going forward seemed fine. Shifter moves OK. When I stopped for fear of really destroying something and had it in neutral it still wanted to go forward but with not as much power as it it was in gear. Called my local guy that has worked on my tractor before and he said it's stuck in two gears at the same time. Any ideas? How could it be in two gears at the same time? He said to pull the top cover off the tranny. It's a row crop model, man am I dreading that with a storm of 8 to 10 inches bearing down on me with no indoor shop to work on it in. Open to all suggestions or someone who has had similar problems. Thanks in advance.

Well I haven't had time to take this apart yet but talked to another guy that said it's common for a piece in the end of the shifter that engages the forks to go bad. I hope when I find the problem that it is something simple like this.

Took top cover off tranny on Saturday.Took three hours to get there. Everything looks pristine except for... lots of ice.I guess the culprit is ice not letting things shift like they're supposed to.The downfall of storing outside.

Yep, I think you found your problem.

As for being stuck in two gears at once, it would lock up and not move.

Time for a fluid change & check the rubber boot on the gear shift lever. That's the most common cause of moisture in the trans fluid.

These old ford tractors just seem to get water in the tranny real bad. My 3910 has shuttle shift and when I bought it, it had water in the tranny. Not sure how that happened. It only has one source and that's the vent. And it has an "acorn" cap. :confused3:
