Ford 1510 Hydraulic problems after fluid change

SUCCESS!!!
Just went out to shop to test. I took a shortcut and just disconnected the discharge at the diverter valve, spun it over with starter and had hydraulic flow almost immediately. Let I spin for 15-20 seconds to make sure. Hooked it back up and started tractor and WA-LA. Works like a champ. I guess there must have been a air block between pump bottom and diverter valve. Sure am glad this is over.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
Mike

Nice, this thing was driving me crazy. I just finished supper and while eating kept thinking what the heck else is there. By the way, I went to TSC to get a couple of shackles and looked up your oil. it does say Ford 134D. I'm glad you kept wetting the pump gears while testing.

Success at last:thumbsup:

Now all I need to do is figure out the dipstick dilemma and how much oil it actually holds. I have seen references to (18QTS) 4.5 gallons and (27.5 QTS) 6.8 gallons which would make sense it the dipstick length changed as I understand it from the info below. Because right now I am using the 7.68 measurement to fill my tractor and if it is wrong then it would be overfilled. What kind of damage would there be if I am wrong?

My 1510 Serial number is UH00728

This also affects the 1310 and the 1710 as well.

19 1 SBA398400310 Dipstick, 2WD, 9.13" Measured From Underneath Cap, Years: 01/01/1983-02/28/1983

19 1 SBA398400350 Dipstick, Steel, 2WD, 7.68" Measure From Underneath Cap, 1310 - Asn UE00209,1510 - Asn UH00206, 1710 - Asn UL00420, Start Year: 03/01/1983

Can someone verify by checking serial numbers and dipstick length??

Or maybe this should be a new thread?

Probably a new thread since only 1510 owners can give you a quick answer. Below is normal level of oil in my 1700 on flat ground. Min level is to keep the pump flooded and higher as long as it is lower than the input shaft seal is okay. Unlike the engine a bit higher oil should not damage anything. most lubrication there is done by splashing other than crank shaft journal and pressure lubrication of rocker arm assembly. I know by now you lost count of how much oil you actually put in. Your friendly NH dealer might be able to research that info for you.

From FO-44 Shop manual, last revision, November 2004. Capacities: Transmission, Rear Axle & Hydraulic System. (no info about dip stick length change) All numbers are in US Qts. with standard transmission. (can post Liters if wanted) (can post Hydrostatsic transmission if wanted)
1100 = 20 US Qt. 1110 = 18. 1200 = 20. 1210 = 18. 1300 = 21. 1310 = 19. 1500 = 21. 1510 = 19. 1700 = 23.2 1710 = 19. 1900 = 25.4 1910 = 29.6 2110 = 34.

Hydrostatsic Transmissions: 1110 = 16.4 1210 = 16.4

No refferance anywhere to your figures of: (18QTS) 4.5 gallons and (27.5 QTS) 6.8 gallons for 1510.
Dipstick length change would not change capacities, it would only change how the dipstick measures the correct level.

Exceptions: 1110 & 1210 = 18 qts

I did look on the NH and Messick's website for the 2 dipsticks. Looks like the longer dipstick says it has been superceded with the shorter one.

My other reference does indeed say 19 Qts. Guess I transposed or read wrong when posting earlier.

Guess I will just have to figure a happy medium and hope for the best.

Thank you for the information. All help and info is much appreciated.

Mike

This is what I am referring to. I was told this was out of the owners manual for the 1510.

I see in the pdf that capacity of 27.5 qts includes POWER STEERING, do you have power steering? If so, capacity is increased for the power steering. If you don't have power steering the old capacity of 19 qts applies. Ray

No, no power steering. I did see that but didn't think it would take a little over 2 gallons for the operation. But I agree it would definitely be less without power steering. I guess 19 is making more sense. Thanks again for the input. I have learned a lot during this oil change and am always learning.

It does seem like a lot of fluid for power steering but that is what it says. I don't have power steering either. Maybe it also includes a front loader along with the power steering. That would sound more reasonable to me, but like I say "who knows". I go by the book and sometimes they are wrong but in this case I would go by 19 qt unless you have a front loader.

MCross -

I just joined this forum and was reading over the history of your 1510 hydraulic trans fluid change issues. Don't know if you still have your tractor or still need any info, but I thought I'd reply here nonetheless. I have a 1985 1510 4WD, unit number UH-02900. Have owned it since new in April 1985. Just changed my hyd fluid. I do not have power steering nor do I have any implements hooked up right now. My change took 25 quarts to come up to the fill level on my dipstick. My owners manual looks exactly like the pdf you attached in an earlier post, word-for-word, except my "Rear Axle and Transmission" info is found on page 48 and the hyd oil capacity on mine says "18" quarts. That wasn't even close to being correct!

My dipstick length measures 7½" from the underside of the rubber seal to the end of the stick, and the "full" mark is one inch up from the end of the stick, so the length from underside of rubber seal to full level is 6½". After having pulled all four drain plugs plus the filter, there is no way that 18 or 19 quarts is enough fluid to recharge the system. 25 was needed for mine, and with power strg it's probably close to the 27.5 listed in the pdf copy of the owners manual that you have.

Again, not sure if you still needed any of this info, but thought I'd send it along.

Shorty,

Thanks a bunch for your response. I still do have the tractor. The information you posted is very helpful. Takes some of the guess work out of the equation. Somehow I have the longer dipstick, was probably replaced somewhere along the way. So I guess I will cut it off at the proper length and cut a mark at 1 inch from the end.

Once again, thanks for your time in posting the information. It will help a lot.
