First, I am a car dealer - used only now, but previously a new car dealer so have a fair understanding of some of the challenges any dealer faces.

The question is whether dealers find consignment sales beneficial? In the mid-eighties another dealer in our 20 group recommended taking vehicles on consignment as a way to supplement our inventory and have access to vehicles we wouldn't ordinarily have a shot at. It has to be fair, but my experience in doing it for years was pretty good - some vehicles worked well and others didn't, but we had no investment and it expanded our offering and we also took in some pretty good trades.

I've recently purchased another tractor and will be selling my current unit.

I appreciate all the dealers that provide a wealth of info to our community.

My dealer will sell on consignment, especially if you are upgrading. I think they charge 5% or $500 whichever is lesser. I'm not sure if the same holds true if you just want to sell without upgrading.

Many if not all the dealers around here do the same thing, although I don't know what they charge.

I take compact tractors on consignment fairly regularly... mostly due to people moving out of state. (imagine that, people leaving NY state)
anyway, when we sell on consignment, we charge a
commission of 10%, after expenses. If the tractor is in
need of mechanical work before sale, that is the consignee's expense.. same with trucking etc. if they can't get it
brought in.
And sure, some deals are case by case, and these details
can vary ..
