Flat tire, now what?

/ Flat tire, now what? #81
It's obvious the tires are old and need replaced, and I will, but I am not going to take $1000 worth of new tires through the kind of sticks and limbs that I am driving over right now. I am going to milk these things as long as I can until I get all of the puncture obstacles cleared and burned, then I will replace them.
It takes a special kind of wood stob to punch a hole in a good tire -- even if it be an AG tire [which isnt the tuffest]. Fairly short undisturbed cuts are a threat ... longer tend to fold. Small ~ 2" freshly chainsaw cut at ~6-10" height can do it, esp if cut at an angle. Beaver cut sharp stobs are lethal for a year or so. Without the presence of this kind of stuf a good AG is close to invulnerable. You would likely save a lot of time and frustration by changing out those old fragile tires.

The former owner of my tractor, put new Goodyears on my tractor. I brush hog scotch broom witch leaves lots of "pungey sticks" and so far so good.

bleeding on your tractor does not have anything to do with the injector lines. Go to Hoyes website, they have a tutorial on it. But basically its 3 screws that you open till bubbles stop flowing starting at the tank side of filter then the out side then right at the injector pump, should take less than 5 mins.

If you dont do it you will have air in there. which it sounds like you do.

I'm resurrecting this old thread as I'm still trying to get my new front tires. The rears should last me through the season I hope. What a hassle this has turned into. The 5-14's are an obscure size, and I think this is the only tractor in the world which uses them. I don't want the piece of crap Chinese Milestone tires which blew out, so I ordered the Bridgestone/Firestone tires through a local ag tire dealer. They were supposed to be in last Wednesday. Well, apparently they were not in the warehouse in Portland like they said, and when I checked back they said "Oh, they're in Iowa, did you want to order them?" I said "You mean they've not even been ordered!?" I gave up on those guys, and ordered them through Hoye Tractor two days ago and was told they would ship out that day. Fast forward to this morning and I get a voicemail saying that the tires have not only not been shipped, but they won't even have them until Tuesday which means I wouldn't get them until the following week since I'm in WA. I can't wait that long. I'm going to have to pay $20 more per tire, and $10 more per tube to get them from the local Les Schwab which I was trying to avoid in the first place. It will end up being more than $400 for these dinky little tires. I'm actually a little disappointed in the tractor given the difficulty of finding parts.

Fredricks in Al. should have them. They have a Dealer in MN. Stans or one in La. these show to be closest to you. I would give them a call. Can't hurt. ;)

They show 5.14 Rear YM1702 and 4.00x12 Fronts for a YM1700

If you didn't order yet, you might give the guys at nebraska tire a call. Be sure and measure the height of the tire before calling. I ended up putting skid steer tires on the front of my 226D (25x8.5x14) and adjusting the rear tire pressure to get the correct amount of front over-run. I went from turf tires on the front to R4's. No regrets from the tractor or wallet.

P.S. I have done business with Hoye and my experience with them was nothing short of excellent. I didn't have my information with me, and not only did they take the time to ensure that the parts I needed were absolutely correct, they also reminded me of what I forgot. Sometimes a few 79 cent parts make all the difference. A lot of businesses could learn a lot from their extremely competent customer service. I have to believe your experience was an exception, not the norm.

Thanks for the replies. I already ordered from Les Schwab. I can't afford to have this tractor sitting anymore because I've lost 2 weeks. It's my own fault for waiting. The guys do seem nice at Hoye, and I will order stuff from them in the future. It was an honest mistake I know, but it seems every single business I have dealt with over the course of the past few months has completely dropped the ball. I could sit here and name off like half a dozen instances of incompetence but I will let bygones be bygones. Thanks again.

I doubt this will make you feel better but I had a similar experience with Les Schwab. I placed an order for an ag tire that was 'in the regional warehouse' and waited. Two weeks later no history of the order. I repeated this process a couple more times when they promised it was in some other region's warehouse.

I think they had a phantom tire listed in inventory that wasn't located at any specific place.

Sorry for late response. I bought same size from our local Tire Factory two years ago. My tires are made by Carlyle......seem to be a good tire thus far. Check Tire Factory if still in market. Good luck.

You Sir, are a better man than I.

I do wish you great luck in finding the tires you need.

This is the exact problem I just experienced both with Hoye and GCR. They both showed they had the tires in inventory, then come to find out several days after waiting they didn't have them after all. It's really frustrating. GCR didn't even have the courtesy to call me back. At least Hoye called back after 2 days. I still thought that was excessive because they told me they were going to ship the day I ordered. Now I'm worried the same thing is going to happen with Les Schwab. If it does I'm really going to be flabbergasted. I've never had such a hard time finding tires for something in my life. This is the sort of frustration which leads to me buying newer equipment. I love the tractor, but I can't handle this amount of stress and effort to try to get parts.

These are great tractors. I wouldn't give up that easily. Worst case if mowing or something just has to get done, slap on some junk automotive tires and avoid using 4 wheel drive until the real tires arrive. My YM240 is similar, 2wd, and I don't think I'm missing much without 4wd. (But I have to admit loaded rear tires is the secret to this).

I got the tires today. Yes, they are 5-14 R1 traction tires which is what comes on the 4wd 1700D. The total came to $389 which included tax and new tubes. Yes, Les Schwab is a total rip-off and this is consequently the most money I have ever paid per tire for any vehicle or piece of equipment in my whole life, but I could not longer wait for tires. This has gone on waaaaay too long with multiple tire places dropping the ball. I need my darn tractor. They are Bridgestone brand, not some cheesy Chinese pieces of junk like were on there before. I just hope they last. If I start getting flats then I will have them filled. I'm tired of dealing with punctures.

If they provide years of service the cost will be much easier to stomach.

I seldom object to paying a premium for quality... I hate being taken to the cleaners on any purchase.

Spring is here and prime tractor season is just starting.

Glad you got it resolved.

Had a similar tire issue with my Kubota... took the tire to a big dealer with a puncture... they charged me for a repair which lasted 5 minutes... went back and they said I needed to order a tire and I did... after two weeks, with me calling... none were to be had... mind you... I had already paid for it.

In the end, I asked their driver where they go for foam filling and it was 90 miles away... drove to that shop and after several weeks of fooling around prior... I had finally found a shop that knows AG tires and all was finally good.

Well, I got my 5th flat tire today. I can't take it anymore. This is the right rear which has never been flat. So, both fronts went flat, one twice, and both rears have been flat. And, I'm not running over anything sharp that I know of. I'm at my wits end. I've NEVER had such a horrible time with flats in my life. The nearest tire shop is LESS Schwab where I bought my front tires, and I don't care for them.

Yeah, they have tubes. I don't know where the puncture is as I can't see it. And when I take the tires in to Les Schwab they try to tell me that they cannot work on them because they have weather checking and they want me to buy new rears. I already bought the fronts from them. It's just annoying to deal with them.

On edit it looks like the right rear is the same one that was flat before. I've lost track this has been going on so long. Thinking of just buying some new rear tires now.

My run of bad tire luck convinced me to have my tires foam filled... not cheap

On the plus side, there is no way it can ever be flat and I picked up a little weight down low to help with stability.
