Flat tire, now what?

/ Flat tire, now what? #61
I keep getting flats on my front!!

One tire looks older and more dry rotted/cracked and its the one that usually gets the flats. I dont feel anyting in the tire like a briar or anything, but i sure get tired of replacing the tube or patching it every other or every time i want to use the tire. The rim is rusty a bit but we wire brushed it, and the holes look like briar holes not where it was chaffed and finially wore through like you would expect rust to do or chafe and then a hole.

I have looked into foam but seems expensive and have not found a place to do it.

One lady here who is into classic tractors said no foam as its a pain to get off the rim. I said if i foam them im not getting them off for like 15 years hopefully then i will deal with it.

foam em with a tube in....

/ Flat tire, now what? #63
Thats what i said but she still was like ....grumble..foam...that mess....

i probably wouldn't foam a old tire.. but I'd do a new one as I know it would have years of service.

I'd probably alsy tire soap the rim and use a tube though.. :)

I mean this is an old tire but in my opinion its years from flapping apart, like 10 years at least id say. Its also got plenty of tread say 80% of original height is left.

/ Flat tire, now what? #66
I don't think the concern is that the tire will be coming apart anytime soon, but more about frequently having flats due to the inner-tube being exposed to the point of a possible puncture, and as I mentioned by having to patch or replace the inner-tube several times each time having to inflate it to seat the tire causes it to crack even more,
So! my advice would be if ever had to patch/replace the inner-tube I would plan to either boot or completely line the interior of the tire with something to prevent the inner-tube from showing through,;)

Deep i am kind of talking a different thing than the OP and his thread, Soundguy have kind of a sub topic going on withing this tread.

He and mainly me in my post are talking about foaming tires. He said he would not foam and old tire but a new one yes. I then said well my tire is not new but still has many more years left in it. And if i foam filled it small hunks falling off would not matter as the thing would be a solid hunk of foam under the tire and tube so stuff can penetrate but it wont matter.

Some is solid, but I believe most is similar to silicone caulk in hardness. There are also solid and semi solid/semi-pneumatic tires for telescoping material handlers (LULL, Skytrac, ect). Are surplus military tires foamed? I know they use a lot of 20" rims.

I hear ya. new is realative :)

If it looks good. it's new. even if it's 5-10ys old. :)

the stuff i play with is usually 5-7 decades old. :) one of them 50 year old tires I wouldn't foam. a good looking 10yr.. sure. :)

Oh! OK clemsomfor, sometimes I jump in and not aware of my surroundings:D But in an effort to be relevant to the foaming, I once knew a guy who foam filled his sons 4-wheeler tires, it was one of them rigid frame 4 wheelers with no shocks, man what a bouncy ride that little guy had, His father had foam filled the tires with house insulation foam:duh: and was actually impressed with his achievement, No more flat tires for him

i've used that house foam to foam up a tire on a rolling gate.. worked.. 'ok' not great.. but rolled better than being flat. :)

Well, the left front tire held up all day after being repaired, then I blew the right front! Goshdarnit! That's three of the four tires. I just need to blow the left rear and I've done all of them. If that wasn't enough, the tractor started sputtering and died and I assumed I was out of fuel. I put some fuel in, and she started up after an extended crank session, but now I'm down on power. I'll change the fuel filter and see if that helps. If not, good gracious I hope it's nothing too difficult to troubleshoot. I am starting to get a little cranky having to work on this old tractor so much. If it's not one thing, it's another. I've also got a few leaks here and there that I'd like to fix but I need to get a few things done first before I take her out of service for a while. I just make sure all fluids are full before I operate. Lord, please just be a fuel filter.

if you ran her out. bleed her.

will keep you from doing it again!

Should I just crack the injector lines? Don't have a manual on this tractor. Tractor will start and run so I'd think it would work the air out itself? I think I'll change the fuel filter just because, then bleed the lines.

You need new tires. your tires are shot, not just "weather-checked" as you first mentioned. Don't be afraid of Chinese tires. They may not last 50 years but will last 20, especially if stored under cover, as all tractors should be.

Are you bush hogging with your new bush hog. If it has sharp bladed that's probably making the tire situation worse. Sharp blades leave sharp sticks, dull blades leave beat up sticks. Small tractor tires aren't much tough than car tires,

Its time for a major investment in either new tires or large quantities of ductape, baling wire, and Fix a Flat. With the failures youre having its pretty obvious that the tire carcass has been badly compromised. Good tires are not fragile. I recommend the Firestone SAT II 23 Super All Traction Lug. Scroll to "Super all Traction II 23° TLR1" [page 9]

http://www.firestoneag.com/webres/File/Tire-Info/TireCatalog.pdf

They have them in 8 Ply. They have a flat tread profile almost like tracks.

Your fuel issue should work out by itself after the filter change. A dollup of fuel conditioner couldnt hurt.

I'd even go less tough than a car tire. since at least the car tires are radials.

It's obvious the tires are old and need replaced, and I will, but I am not going to take $1000 worth of new tires through the kind of sticks and limbs that I am driving over right now. I am going to milk these things as long as I can until I get all of the puncture obstacles cleared and burned, then I will replace them.
