Flat tire, now what?

He told me of some tractor tires he changed once where the tires had been badly dry-roted and someone had lined the inside of the tires with used tread caps, He ask the customer about "whats up with that?" and he's said they been in there for 15 years,
Now that my freinds is what you call getting all from tires you can get,;)

very common.

I've changed tires that had a roll of duct tape in t he center of the rusty rim to prevent aprasion of the tube.

I've seen an old tube split and used as a boot.

rubber is spendy.

I run a tire till it blows off the rim...I have fronts on a couple tractors that started life as tri ribs and are now slick. one has a hole the size of a quarter.. i put a large 6" farm patch inside the tire and retubed and went.

I chenged a st of fronts on etime that were so thin in the tread area that i ripped them in half takingthem off the bead. IE.. a bead ring and half a tire in each hand. :)

Just an FYI- I am extremely limited on tools right now because the lion's share are in a different state. I don't even have power to the property to run a compressor though I am trying to get the utility company to turn it on. I measured the tires to try to get an understanding of the ratio, and it left me further perplexed. The inflated 5-14 fronts measure right around 24" in diameter, and the inflated 8.3-24 rears measure right around 37", maybe a hair less for a current ratio of 1.541. The reason being I am trying to see if those turf tires will fit. The turf tire measurements are 24" on 12" rims and x 35" on 16" rims with a ratio of 1.458. Hoye calls for 14" rims on the front with an unknown tire diameter, with the rear being the same 16" rim and tire. Not really sure if those will work. I am talking about the set of turf tires and rims mentioned in an above post.

After reading these stories it is apparent that Les Schwab is trying to force me to buy new tires rather than fixing a tube in a tire which has cracks but would likely provide me many more years of service. The lugs are fine.

Anyone know where to find information on the acceptable tire ratios for 4wd Yanmar tractors? I am having a hard time finding anything.

My tractor is a grey market and it originally had those deep lug rice paddy tires which have been cut down. I don't understand how the ratio can be so important given that lugs of several inches in depth will throw off the ratio when well worn.

Forget new tires , get your flat fixed. Schwab, being a national company has company rules about cracked tires that they must adhere to. Yours are good for another 20-30 years.

that's what happens when you have a corporate liability mentality dealing with on road tires and then they apply them to off road ag applications.

it's a CYA issue

I'm going to pull the wheel Monday am and try to find somebody to repair it. I don't even have a cheater bar to break the lugs loose.

wow... yep.. hard to fix em with no tools

I've got some tools with me, just not the ones I really need. I'll be forced to use the jack from my truck, and some socket wrenches on the lugs, with some good, old-fashioned elbow grease. I can get it done. Appreciate all the input, and I'll post some pics of the tire and the weather checking so you guys (and gals?) can see what I am dealing with.

I'll bet Sound Guy's 8n and 2N have weather checking you would not believe. my step-brother has had a 9N for 30 years that had checked tires when he got it, probably original, about 60 years. They are still running.

I was wondering about that myself. When you do these calculations, do you include the diameter of the rice lugs or jut the diameter of the tire. If you include the lugs it seems like you would have to replace with a bigger tire.

Maybe the tractor designer assumes the lugs will be embedded in mud whenever the front axle is engaged? In that case the tire casing (or maybe half the lug height?) might be the starting point for calculating rolling diameter.

I think measuring the distance traveled per revolution in actual working conditions is the only way to get accurate data.

Is it ever cost-effective to switch tire sizes just to get less expensive/more-available tires?

I was thinking in terms of changing from Ag tires to Turf tires not necessarily changing sizes from Ag to Ag.

Sure, if you have special access to something. Lets say you have a source of 39" super swampers on 16" rims, or 13.00-24 grader tires, ect. Ive wondered about 24.5" wheels with super single semi tires (dump truck floating, steering tires) as turfs. Now, buying them new wouldnt save you, but if you could get them used for free, it might be worth making an adapter plate to mount some Alcoa 24.5".

Ok I'm venturing off into an area I know nothing about -which I am about to prove - :D - but don't grader or semi tires have far stiffer sidewalls? 12-ply rating etc. Seems to me on these light tractors they wouldn't conform to the ground at all. The super swampers might be a good match.

Your right, but a 12 or 16 ply tire on a 2000# tractor would last forever and be the next best thing to foam filled tire.

I once thought of getting some 10"wide Chevy 6 lug 15" or 16" rims, ( think someone said were same bolt pattern) and get a aggressive 36"-38's mud tires to put on the rear, would be approx the same diameter, although the rims would have to need a offset in order to clear the fenders,
These truck tires look like could be used on a tractor,
